So Sforza, what was the headphone you found that you were happy with, and for what genre?

An HE-6 as the general catch all, a Pro 2900 just for EDM listening/mixing, and an HD25-1 as a portable. Changing cables and pads for the HD25 made a huge difference.

Speaking of which, there's been a significant shift towards vintage orthos among the community over here. At a small meet I attended last month, no headphone was younger than 1985 except for a Sony CD900ST. There were 4 yamahas (HP50a, two HP1000 and an HP2 I think), an ATH-2, ATH-7. Buying and modding the T50rp is also finally getting more popular. I suppose it might be because of a general disappointment at the current high end "new" releases.

I am going to catch up on something I should have done in the first place, as I did not introduce myself. So, better late than never.

I am from Austria, and have been into headphones for a little more than a year now. Since headphones are hilariously expensive over here (my first real headphone, Grado SR80i, was about $300!), I soon took the modding route and I can say, by doing so, I guess I have learned quite a lot about headphones.
The interest in learning more about them has led me to this forum, since it is kept alive by experienced headphoniacs and is not full of people praising stuff without any background and expertise on their sides.
Again I want to express my thanks to purrin for his great service to people who would want to put their headphones to an objective test to make others have more reliable information than just subjective impressions.

As for my headphone inventory, at present I own the following:
- Symphones Magnums V4
- Brainwavz HM5
- Sennheiser HD600
- Fostex T50RP
- Creative Aurvana LIve!
- Hifiman HE-500
- Brainwavz B2
- Several StratoKOSSters

I enjoy visiting this forum and really appreciate the work that is being done by Marv.

Hi There,

I stumbled here from a link on head-fi, and am still new to the audio world, but very much enjoy the waterfall plots that have been posted.

I am a Canadian Gold Miner, and enjoy all types of music, and have been enjoying the headphone hobby so far, especially trying to hear what is seen in graphs.  After I bought the T1 (coming from the DT880 and DT990), I was bothered by the treble.  Upon seeing Purrin's graph, I found it pretty swank to see/hear the correlation.

At the moment, I'm looking to upgrade my DAC and find an alternative headphone to my T1 with an equivalent soundstage.  HD800s are hard to find below $1k.

Current inventory of headphones are my M50, HD598, HD650, T1 and a pair of custom IEMs.

Hey there,

I've lurked head-fi for nearly two years. I used to have the same name over there until someone complained that in some east european language my name contains obscenities. I had a pretty horrible first impression of Jude thanks to that issue.

Anyway, right now I'm loving the posts I'm reading here. Full of humour, an easy going attitude and with no marketing/fanboy bullshit. I'm a believer in measurements because limited as they are, I believe they tell us a lot about a headphones technical ability and can be used as a pretty good indicator of performance.

When I first got into "hi-fi" I wasn't very experienced and thought spending thousands of dollars would result in appropriate scaling in sound quality. Due to my location, I don't have much access to hi-fi and all my purchases are through the internet. I ended up buying a Cavalli Audio Liquid Fire and heard maybe a 1 or 2% sound quality increase between that and my current portable players amplifier. All factors aside, the $3.5 grand I spent on that thing was absolute bullshit. I returned it promptly and am looking forward to an ODAC+ODA combo for ultimate price/performance value. I just want something that works.

From all the information I've gathered over the time I've been lurking, I've developed an opinion that audio reproduction is not an artform, it's a science. Music is very much an artform (my dad's an old school jazz musician, and I've been playing music on piano, trombone and guitar since I was very little) and sound engineering can be a combination of the two, however audio reproduction to me is not. A DAC synthesises an analog signal from digital information and should do so accurately with a low inaudible noise floor and no added artifacts. A headphone amplifier should amplify the signal enough to power the headphones sufficiently without adding to the mix. The most important part are the transducers, which I believe should aim to reproduce the signal with the most accurate attack and decay.

That's something I've gathered from researching headphones and audio gear. I believe what makes an SR-009 that resolving is it's power to attack and decay incredibly accurately. I feel like the perfect headphone would be one which can reproduce a signal and stop it completely within 0.5 of a milisecond. That way there's no ringing which would mask all the other details and blur them together. Electrostats have the advantage thanks to having control of both sides of the tranducer but I think dynamics and orthos can eventually reach this goal.

That's just my theory. I've got no formal qualifications in Electrical or Sound Engineering or anything. I'd like to know what others think of this (esp. ones with more knowledge, expertise and experience).

Anyway, nice to meet y'all!

We think it's cool that your handle means cunninglus in Transylvania, so we won't force you to change it.

The LF is a pretty good amp. What you experienced is diminishing returns and could be expected depending upon your headphones or DAC. The ODAC is pretty good for the money - but some of us have struggled with the ODAC because it gets it power from the USB connection. While I like the Objective2 amp, I can't give the ODAC a seal of approval because it does sound different (from really darn good to yuck) depending upon what it's connected to. I think the AMB Gamma 2 DAC is a safer bet, although more expensive at ~$200 used.

What you will find here is people with extremely expensive TOTL setups and others with very modest setups; but with a mutual understanding and respect of why people do their own thing. There are no objectivist vs. subjective or TOTL vs. value here or accurate vs. euphonic wars here. The real purpose is to help people find what suits their preferences best. Even if you are into accuracy, what you will find are nuances to accuracy, and ultimately compromises and trade-offs among certain aspects of accuracy in your quest to achieve it.

LOL, I remember a mod getting upset over at head-fi because someone had the word "lesbian" in their signature in a non derogatory context. Ruh roh!

Purrin's last paragraph really sums this place up well in my experience. Welcome!

Actually, I didn't know that. Kurwazajebista is two separate words. Kurwa is Polish for 'whore' but is also used as an expletive. Zajebista is a way of saying 'awesome' but in a rude manner (zajebac = to fuck, zajebista = awesome). So together it either means 'fucking awesome' or 'fucking awesome whore', which ever way you look at it. Both being pretty damn hilarious if you speak the language, mainly due to the sheer over-the-top ridiculouslessness involved, which happens to be a part of my sense of humour (hmm I wonder why Jude was so offended...  :D). But I digress...

I was expecting diminishing returns, however my DX100's amp has displayed more improvements than I remember the Liquid Fire having. I was dumbfounded that the difference was so small and yet it cost so much. Maybe with different headphones, sources or music it would scale better but personally, it has to do better than that to be worth it's asking price for me.

ODAC suits me because most of my listening is via a computer. Whatever isn't is via a portable device. And it's cheap! Have you posted your ODAC impressions anywhere purrin? I'd love to read them!

;D And that paragraph is why I'm so glad to be here.

PS: Apologies for the long posts. I always write long posts. Love to ramble, etc.

PPS: And thank you for the welcome Muppetface!! :)
