New Members - Introduce Yourself
« on: May 22, 2012, 10:53:48 PM »

Welcome to Aarr Me Headphones Be Effin Ringin!   ahoy

This is a forum about headphones.  We are interested in realistic assessment and discussion through a combination of objective measurements and discerning subjective impressions.  Our goal is to seek and destroy all crappy headphones.  We want to hear music, not the inside of some jackass engineer's resonating plastic bung hole.

If you're a new member, please do the following before posting, lest you're keen on walkin the plank!!

1. Read the articles in the soapbox
2. Read the stickies at the top of the headphone measurement forum
3. Introduce yourself here

4. Peruse the Manifesto

This isn't an interrogation, we aren't judging you here.  This is a get to know you thread, we are friendly and welcome new Pirates.  Just say a bit about yourself like what you do, or why you're interested in being part of a headphone forum, or what you think of the CSD measurements here, or your past experiences with headphones good/bad.  Whatever seems relevant or appropriate for you.  It's nice to have some background for new members before opinions start emerging out of arses.

Discussion is fine too, as long as it's related to the topic at hand.   :)p4

A Note from LFF about Subjective and Objective extremism.

The subjective versus objective debate is truly a question of origins. Before you continue reading this...ask yourself..."How did I come here to Changstar?" and then ponder what your current goal of being here, in this hobby, is.

Many people on various forums often portray the subjective versus objective debate as religion versus science with subjectivity being religious and objectivity being scientific. If you don't agree with these labels, then you too are labeled as being a fanatic in the religious camp.

The fact is that neither model has been established beyond a reasonable doubt. Whether we like it or not, those of us who subscribe to measurements do so by faith. Faith in the measurement equipment, in the operator and in the programs. Those who argue that the design of the ear and the built-in biological differences allow each of us to hear differently and thus invalidate objectivity, are not arguing from subjective beliefs, but rather science that is based upon empirical observation and logic.

So why even squabble about subjectivity versus objectivity?  What does it matter at the end of the day? Should it matter what we believe is true? ABSOLUTELY!

Even more important than what we believe to be true is what actually is true. Someone might not believe in gravity, for example. Nevertheless, if that person were to step off the empire state building, that person would fall to the ground below, regardless of what they believed. While it may be true that neither model has been established as pure fact, one model has had more empirical observation and logic applied to it than the other - both biologically, mechanically, theoretically and has had many studies in the areas of biomechanics, physics, biology and engineering. And so, once again, we have the question: Why are you here on Changstar? Are you here to learn with an open mind? Are you her e to disprove what you believe is false? If it's the first one, then welcome and enjoy your stay. If it's the second, please visit Head-Fi.com...they are more your kind of people.

We are here because we don't rely on hearsay. We invite all people to investigate the evidence for themselves and draw their own conclusions after analyzing both the objective and subjective aspects of the hobby. We do not approach anyone with a "holier than thou" view...we just don't believe in anything holy. Nothing is perfect.

POSTING RULES:

There are no rules other than to use good judgement.

Think of this place as a pub or bar. There are going to be owners, staff, regulars, less-than-regulars, and random people who walk in off the street. For new people, there's a sign on this place and that's pretty much it. If you are new, the regulars may just not like the way you smell. That's life, that's how it works. If you want to know the rules, which there are none, it's best just to hang around a little bit and get to know the people around here.

If you have any questions about the forum, please pm one of these admins- rhythmdevils, Questhate, Muppetface or Anaxilus.  ie not Purrin.

Purrin's message: PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME about karma points, getting banned/un-banned, promotions, access to secret areas (there are none), deleted posts, etc. Although I am an admin, I DO NOT ACTIVELY MODERATE THIS SITE. I do not necessarily know what the other half-dozen administrators and moderators do (my brain is not cybernetically linked to this site.) Nor do I care what they do. I just post.

I wasn't invited, but I showed up anyway, figuring I could get in on the action.  What can I say, adult films have skewed my paradigms of acceptable behavior.

I was previously aware of the CSD Thread at HF, but never really took the time to view it, even now.  Maybe today or tomorrow.  To be completely honest I had presumed that if it were a busy thread there'd be no shortage of petty and unremarkable discourse.  In my experience it tends to show up in just about any decent thread over there.

What I like about HF is the sharing of knowledge and some of the better examples of camaraderie there.  There's plenty of horseshit too.

What I was looking for when joining this site was the scientific aspect of headphone appreciation, because whether or not I know anything about the sound of a given headphone, I like having, processing, and correlating data about them; it appeals to my nerdy side.  I am a firm believer that anything out there that demonstrates the principles of hard science is immeasurable only to the degree to which we haven't learned to measure it.  Like how an FR curve or an impedance curve will only help one to partially understand how a system will sound.  The rest is there, in the output, and we need only find out how to quantify it.   It's something I have endorsed in many a drunken rant since before I discovered the audiophile hobby, because it's true of everything in the universe.  And I'm here to learn and to feed that hunger of mine.  Then speak with hubris and entitlement and try to charge people for my applied intelligence ha ha.  Kidding.

Oh, and I like Pirates.  I saw the movie for the first time just a couple of months ago and thought Evan Stone's delivery was hilarious albeit a little overaffected.

What if the engineer's resonating bung hole was part of the recording?

Does google count as an invitation? :D

More truthfully, I came here to satisfy my own curiosity, and take in the data being churned out by you guys. I like just researching things to pass time and for my own amusement, and maybe I'll post something once in awhile about my own experiences.

I don't really have the experience or the equipment that the regulars have, I just liked reading the CSDs and your collective impressions. I stumbled onto that CSD thread after having a bad time with some Beyers and Ultrasones. Go figure. Those waterfall plots say alot about what I hear in a headphone, and probably would have saved me plenty of time and cash had I known of it. I believe these measurements are good, provided you can read them properly and use them when needed.

Well, maybe I should introduce myself too.
I've been around here for a month of two, but haven't posted much. Just reading and learning.

I've found this place via head-fi. I think head-fi can be a good place if you take everything with a grain of salt. A lot of people over there seem not to know what they're talking about.
That's what I like about this place, people really know what they're talking about. Also, I think there's a great sense of humor around here.

Anyway, great site and I'm happy I found this place!
