Future of schiit dacs and why I love ice cream*
« on: April 26, 2015, 11:53:54 PM »

Ok so by now some of you should be receiving the yggy.  Congratulations you have now heard a more recent version of the yggy I listened to at canjam. :)p5

However despite its well deserved praised (honestly I thought it was gonna suck but I was super wrong, :spank:)  there are certain things about the yggy that keeps every pirate here from buying it.  For me its mostly its size and the reputed belief that it must always be plugged in.  Also price I guess, but if I really put my mind to it I could probably buy one (who needs more than one meal a day ....or alcohol).

So at canjam before the reality set in that I would never own that amazing yggy/rag stack, I sat down with a pirate who told that schiit really wants to bring as much sound of the reference level gear to the masses. That sunday as I was leaving canjam, I saw Mike getting into his car and proceed to thank him for the building his awsome dac and how the combo made me rethink my opinion of the Ragnarok, he personally mention his desire to bring the tech to a more manageable price range for masses, but that I shouldn't get my hopes up for it being anytime soon (remember the yggy still hadn't even been released).

So I thought I'd start a thread here to speculate/ share info/ or just talk about what we would want to trickle down to the line.  I figure with marv and schiit being members they can keep our expectations in check and with many members being audio & electrical engineers we should be able to elucidate some possibilities no?

OK I will start  I kind of want a replacement for the gungnir that less wide (about the length of a macbook air) specs:
-1 AD R2R dac per channel
-usb gen 3
-close-form digital filter
-discrete JFET analog section
-good power supply that doesn't take forever to stabilize

*hahaha for those that don't visit head-fi the title is a parody

BTW, on the question of leaving the DAC on permanently...this is not a new or unique concept.

PS Audio does it with every PerfectWave DAC.  The front button only turns the front panel/touchscreen on/off.  The DAC is hopefully left on 24/7 with the switch on the back.  (Put there on purpose.) Paul says they simply sound better warmed up and for many people that could make uncomfortable for some reason, they kind of allow people to think the DAC is off by letting them turn the front display off and on independently from the DAC (power supplies).  You wouldn't want the screen on permanently anyway- so it is win/win for marketing, the sound quality, and the display.

Yggy just doesn't have a screen on the unit.  Fix: Future Yggy revisions should have an "LED" on/off switch on the front that could perform the same comforting function as the PWD display button PLUS it will stop people from complaining about the LED lumens quantity or color.  LOL.

One of the reasons that I loved my old A-GD NFB-10es2 was that you could dim the front panel or completely turn it off... by remote! With the Yggy, I'll just put some stickers over the LEDs :P.

My Krell's on/off button in front is to put it into standby mode. It's always left warmed up unless I flip the breaker in the back.

I believe there might be something that you're looking for in the future though.

I didn't know that currently only have the geek 450 doing desktop dac duty. That dac heats up pretty quick.

So I have a question about the r2r dacs, currently schiit uses a modular approach to the bifrost and gungnir pcb,  so what would be more realistic that schiit makes a upgrade board or that they release a new product? I need a dac ....soon and I don't mind buying the gungnir if I know that I can upgrade latter but I don't want to buy it if there will be a yggy Jr.  As it is the jump fromm $850 ---> $2300 is pretty wide so it seems they can add a new product somewhere in there.  Hopefully for $1200 or less.

Emotiva also does this, more or less. It stays in "stand-by" mode which keeps the unit warmed up.

My Naim gear has no "power" buttons at all, just breaker switches on the back. I'm pretty sure Naim designs all of their stuff to be left on continuously. What I like about using the Nait 5 in the living room is that Naim amps are biased in such a way as to use little power while idling, less than 20VA, so I don't feel too bad that it's running 24/7. Some of the bigger power integrated amps on the other hand can use hundreds of watts from the wall while doing nothing, which would be a lot harder to accept.

If Theta's history is any indication, be careful what you wish for.

" Yggdrasil also features our all-new USB Gen 3 input module, for exceptional USB input performance. "

And yet my mac mini only detects a USB 2.0 connection.  Anyone got USB 3.0 working?
