there are certain things about the yggy that keeps every pirate here from buying it.  For me its mostly its size and the reputed belief that it must always be plugged in.  Also price I guess, but if I really put my mind to it I could probably buy one.

*hahaha for those that don't visit head-fi the title is a parody

Size / weight is an issue, especially for many vendors who fly to meets and shows.

Price, too, somewhat but I understand the reasons and it's very reasonable for the performance. If Schiit could come out with a baby Ygg priced $1000-1200, that would be wonderful. But I don't know if that's possible.

Shouldn't the title be "why I love vanilla ice cream?"

AD1866? :P A 16 bit R2R DAC with a simplified version of the filter would still be pretty cool.

I hear that the ad1866 is a little warm but if they can get the realistic sound of the yggy then that's fine with me.  I think they are still making the pcm56nk DAC which is suppose to be good. The yggy made my mp3 128kbps  files sound better than 24bit files sound on my 32bit DAC (or for that matter dsd dacs that up rez the files) so I wouldn't mind a good 16 bit DAC, screw hirez!!.

The only thing I'm worried about is whether switching the DAC would yield any cost saving measures. I think that custom made digital filters have to be tailored to the DAC that you are using them for and I know you have to redesign the  clocking and analog stage so they will essentially have to rebuild the entire DAC to use chips they originally rejected for the yggy.  So I'm not sure if the cost per unit saved on the DAC (which I think would be like $50 per DAC) would offset the r&d cost of the building a new DAC.

Is it possible to get the idle power draw down for future products?

I realize this is a non trivial task;  most consumer electronics companies have an entire team dedicated to power management.

honestly the only thing keeping me from saving for yggy is the size and to some extent, the weight

I just don't have anywhere it'll fit on my goddamn desk

Size is a problem it be nice to have a desktop type yggy. That's why I started the thread to discuss what they cut out without compromising the sound to much or conversely how much we have to compromise the sound for a cheaper smaller chasse.

I was going to put that but I only heard like 3 r2r DACs in my life and i only owned 1 so I can't say ill never listen to a delta sigma dac. Besides I feel the yggy is more like strawberry ice cream special and almost universally liked

I just bought a $90 bookcase/shelf unit to place next to main computer table in listening room.
Gungnir+Lyr2 reside on top at the moment.

coincidentally (or not) one of the mid-shelves is certainly large enough to hold a Yggy.

Yggy is the best audio purchase I've made in years. You totally need one.

Yes, definitely. But 11kg and comparable to an ATX tower casing - sure, I can put it on my desk at home same as I put my old PC on it for years. But I thought I got away from that when I switched to using a laptop...

Anyway, I guess Jason and Mike is aware of this - especially the crowd that do not have a dedicated space for audio stuff.

Being a level 44 audiophile requires certain compromises. Bigger and less efficient usually mean better sound.
