Classic Stax really THAT good?
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:38:56 AM »

Noted Ken Rockwell rated some of the classic Stax quite highly. I've owned/heard the Lambda + SRM amp. Very trebly ... so much so that they are like nails on chalkboard. Recall, years back, a friend and I had Senn's MS-100 (from mid-80's; forerunner of MX-100) side by side with the $$ Stax, and we both pref'd the Senn's. So are the Stax (Lambda/SRX) THAT good. Really?

This is what I have:

Ken Rockwell having an opinion on audio is unfortunate.

I did enjoy the SRX but it's no 009.

I've heard a pair of SR-Lambdas normal bias from an SRD-7SB and a vintage receiver that were seriously awesome.  It didn't seem that bright to me.  The highs were silky smooth and very detailed, the bass was deep and tight, and the mids were just plain lustful with female vocals.

I've heard other 'stats that I liked and didn't like before but at the time I really didn't know much about them so I can't match up my memories with a model and didn't remember them that well to begin with.

SR507 is especially awesome out of something made by Frank Cooter.  Still bright, but in such a good way, and so fast and clean and dynamic.

No, just keeping it X rated.  One pair of hairy tits is enough.  I meant the avatar, not you guys of course.
