He should just stick to photographic reviews, not that they're that good but at least he made practical sense to me.

His photos of the Stax are WAY better than those classic Stax deserve. Haven't heard newer Stax, but for the $$ ... too rich for my blood.

Careful, pilgrim ... I thought he was a major sponsor of this site ... i.e. the Photography and Cameras section ?? His opinions on audio photography are what count!

Many people seem to have no problems buying STAX though, around $1000 and you'd have a setup, I think.

Sponsor?  The only thing sponsored was Ken Rockwell's mom last night.   :P

I've never felt that vintage Stax treble was like "nails on a chalkboard" -- if anything Stax have always had the kind of refined treble that embarrasses dynamic headphones. They do mesh better with classical and jazz though. For what it costs for an old Stax rig though it is embarrassing that modern headphones for the same price can't always match the refinement, even if you don't get thumping bass.

Heard a SR-Omega at a recent meet in Austin and felt it was very good from a BH, but slightly detached from reality. Not quite as old as some of the vintage Stax, but it's been out of production for quite a while now. I liked the SR-007, 507, and 009 better. The SR-Omega sounded better than any other Stax I'd heard up to that point.

I like the SR-Omega too.  And an SR-Omega system is what my HD800 system for the same price needs to beat.

I may have a few opportunities to get an SR-Omega over the next month or two. I'm just a little hesitant about the drivers going kaput. Apparently there's an issue with how they're mounted that makes them more susceptible to this than others?

For some reason, I haven't had much luck with vintage Stax. My SR-Sigma developed a very bad channel imbalance in 2010. : (

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

The issue with the SR-Omega is that Stax used the entire frame as the support for the drivers and it's not as solid as it looks.  Instead of the super strong frame in the SR-007 and SR-009 there is this brittle resin skeleton to which everything is attached and once it is damaged in any way, the drivers can't be aligned properly.  Stax clearly knew this back in 1998 which is why even the earliest 007 driver had extra holes just for mounting them in SR-Omega frames.

Ohhh and hi y'all.  :)
