"Tax levels in Belgium are among the highest in the world, with about 40% of gross earnings given up in tax for a single-income family. A study for 2005 showed that Belgium had the highest average income tax rate out of 30 OECD countries. Total taxation represents 45.6 % of the country's GDP. Inheritance tax can reach up to 80%. The Royal family alone receives 12 million € of tax-payers' money each year."

I'd consider that an acceptable deal if it came with free AYCE Belgian bier, moules, frites and chocolate for life! Alas... :'(

Ah Belgium ...That's what you get when the british decide to create acountry from scratch.

Actually after Waterloo the heads of state In Europe decided a Netherlands including Belgium en Luxembourg would be a good buffer state against European conquerors like Napoleon Bonaparte. So in 1815 the "United Netherlands" ruled by William I of Orange became a fact.

Thing was, the house of Orange only cared about itself and while the wealth was pouring into the Dutch regions, the Belgian regions were exploited for taxes and resources. Then William I decided all subjects had to speak Dutch and made it law. The Belgian subjects objected, civil unrest and civil war followed and in 1830 the Belgians founded their own state.

When the Belgians founded their own state it was their "Fuck you!" to William I, current European politics and all the European heads of state who deemed them unable to have their own nation. The Belgians love their national culture and they have every right to.

The British had learnt from the Romans. The Romans had learnt from the Greeks. The Greeks had learnt from the early civilisations in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and the Levant. If you are a great ruler "divide and conquer" are your mantra.

Good to know DF, wasn't aware of the united NL, and always thought the actual dynasty in Belgium had been put in place by the british.
