The Geek Out has the disadvantage of being fed power via USB. I would hope that this wouldn't be the case with the basic Wave as it doesn't share the same weakness. Actually I'd kind of expect it, as an audiophile DAP which outputs audible noise to sensitive IEMs would be a bad design by definition (especially when compared alongside its competitors).

...wait, that might actually make sense for you

Come at me bro i got cousins

Mine are similar to the UERMs, so that sounds somewhat assuring. Don't use audio enhancements.

Okay, the possible $38 perk that adds standalone dac functionality to the basic models is tempting. I don't want to put more money in considering I'm not sure the Wave is what I personally need, but it does sound fairly reasonable if you're already deep in, and it's not $100+ like certain other perks... On the negative, the "maybe too many variants" thing is still a thing.

Part of me wants this campaign to do well and hopes LH drops an awesome product, the other is still wary considering their track record and somewhat vagueness of the product at this point in time. (From what I've read of their previous kickstarter)

Are there other daps on the market these days that can also act as standalone dac?

I think the Fiio X3 and X5 can do that party trick.

Right now my thoughts are to try and keep the cost of my Wave 32 to $148 and the Wave X 128 to $329.
What I really want is a player to run UERM and one to run HD600.  If either don't work for intended purposes (or if one can do both), I can sell with low risk.
By that time, something may fit the bill if either doesn't work out for some reason.  Or, I can buy someone's maxxed out Wave used after a time period.
Wave X 128 is 320mW and I would like 450mW to match my GO 450, but the XD 128 which is 450mW costs too much (since I haven't heard it and it won't be here for 9-12 months).

The HM-801 had an S/Pdif input and could also act as a horrible USB DAC. The newer ones I think need a dock for that. The AK120 I believe has an optical digital in, not sure about the others.

Yeah, I may back out from the vanilla 32GB and just wait for the second generation product which will probably have the more popular perks included (pure speculation) or pick a used almost-fully-loaded iteration off someone for cheap. LH is committed to adding more and more perks, and something like a second SD slot would be welcome, but the costs add up.

Vanilla 32GB gives you something to look forward to and isn't much of a stretch/risk.  See if others think the more expensive ones are worth it and try out the form factor/UI/sound.

The more I think about it, I do wonder why I'm backing a Wave instead of something like the Fiio X3. The lagged is already available, cheaper/comparably priced, and seems to do everything that matters: all formats, expandable memory, Digital and analogue outputs.
But I guess I'm a sucker for anything you lot approve of (and I can actually afford).
