I think I may have to hop onto the Wave as well.. I'm satisfied with the dx90 with the UERMs, but sometimes I can't get over the sabre treble =/

Any comments on the Wave + UERM paring?

Curious too. If I get a Wave I'm going to use it with JH13 (pre-Freq), and I'm hoping the Wave bests iPod + Pico

Err.. all of the Geeks are using Sabres so they can claim DXD/DSD support because that's extremely necessary with a portable setup. If you want to get away from the ESS9018M, you should get the HM-802 or one of the AKs.

Correct. Sadly all the AKs are revamped w/ cirrus chips so I don't think myself or marvey can stand behind the 120 anymore. Interesting they switched just before Wolfson got bought out.

Darn, I somehow glazed over that. Guess I'll have to wait and see... perhaps the Wave will do a good job at hiding the sabre glare.

The CS 4398 being used by A&K is the same chip used by Lynx. If the Series II AKs are bad (and I have no idea whether they are, since I haven't heard them), it's the implementation, not the chip.

I was talking about the AK DAPs in particular, not a full sized desktop solution so yeah implementation is different.  I think Marv would probably say the Lynx does have a more laid back dynamic signature compared to some others so their could be an inherent signature too.  The Hilos strength is in tonal balance and decent resolution and clean imaging for me, other DACs like my PWD have more dynamic swing IMHO which interestingly enough uses a Wolfson like the 120 did.  But yes, everything digital is actually analog and you can certainly get away with better implementations in a desktop box.

As of now, it's better than something like the Herus and some other Sabre implementations, but don't expect ladder DAC analog smoothness.  I'm hoping the XD circuit helps out with that and I think Larry reported that the femtos seem to offer a more natural tone, to his ears mind you.  It also remains to be seen what if any analog upgrades are offered.

^I feel myself getting sucked in to the "got one good priced/bare bones version" and one "over the top version with the add-ons" thing.
A bunch of you did that with the Pulse Desktop DAC.
If the femto clock is that good (I saw a caveat on Geek Force Forum that the XD may use different femto clocks, BTW), I may end up with one Wave 32 at the $148 price (will add a 256GB card to it) and one Wave X128 for $329 (or possibly $579 if I add the Femto clocks to it).  Then there is too much time to talk oneself into the XD.  Carp.

CEE TEE: the 32 is $158 now. The cheaper $148 is sold out.
And both require +$40 for international shipping, in case anyone else is outside of USA.
