Too many nickel-and-dime perks, some of which I wanted, but I just couldn't see myself throwing more money at what was (for me) intended to be a budget DAP. I was already on the fence in the beginning, went in back when I though the 32GB was a limited time thing (jumped on the last one), only to have them add a new (a few new) batches shortly after. Same day, in fact. The whole situation has has left a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

A part of me still wants the device, but I'd probably be better served with just waiting for a second hand model with a configuration closer to my needs, or even for a subsequent generation. If they didn't refund me, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but I'd rather take the money and save it for said later versions if I'm still inclined.

Out of curiosity, does this no refunds policy apply to "pre-reboot" backers, or just folks who backed the wave as a DAP and then decided against it?

Kiro- I have a feeling that the Wave 32 we got for about $150 is going to be hard to beat by the time it comes out.  The stock/standard 32 is the one I am betting on for my IEMs.  I also am getting a stock/standard X128 for my larger phones.  I didn't upgrade anything on either player and am happy about resisting additional upgrades.  Looking around at stuff in the $150 price range, what are the other options?  Seems better to give the 32 a chance and then decide to sell/upgrade if you like the 32 that much.  You get to try it without much risk. Unless there is going to be a meet near you in Q2 or Q3 2015 where you can hear a Wave before buying some other model at more than $150...after hanging with Gavin at the show today, that's what I would recommend.

Pretty sure I don't have a choice but to keep it now, seeing the comments on the IGG page. Looks I'm not the only one who (mis?)construed that refunds were possible from comments on the board. Others were seemingly told the same as I. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/geek-wave-it-s-not-a-next-gen-ipod-it-s-a-no-compromise-portable-music-player#comments

EDIT: Gavin comments that he's done refunds for pre-reboot backers on the page, Dave.

Interesting, I left a somewhat... irate comment on their IGG page, deleted it within seconds of posting because I felt I was being overly emotional, and just received an email reply from Gavin that my refund would be taken care of soon in response to it. Guess what you say doesn't disappear.

Arise!

So, LH is offering the new SABRE 9018AQ2M DAC chip for a $22 add-on to their geek wave.

I require your opinions, informed comments, and general shenanigans, please.

What's the stock chip?  If it's the 9010-2M, I might not bother (that's the chip used in the Resonessence Herus, of which I am a well-known fanboi), even at only $22.

Kunlun:

I believe this upgrade is only for the Wave 64GB and above. I think have the 32 on order and got an email to that says one needs to upgrade to the 64.

Stock chip is the Sable 9018M

The new chip is available on the 64 and up.

The 32 will be available and shipped last--apparently it's getting delayed significantly behind the all other geek wave models.

New chip is the ESS Sabre 9018AQ2M.

A Note About the Cost

If you're up on such nerdiness, you may have already learned that the new 9018AQ2M is not pin compatible with the 9018M.  This means we have to do a lot more than just switch out DACs.  First, we need to do some re-routing on the PCB.  Second, we have to add 4 C0G capacitors to the circuit because there are more pins on the new DAC chip that need to be decoupled.

What's the benefit of the new chip?

Great question.

With the latest architecture, ESS separated the analog and digital ground planes from one another (hence the need for more pins).  By doing this, the SNR and the THD+N characteristics of the DAC are drastically improved.   Larry's looking forward to show you the test reports. :)
