I can vouch for the Tenore's sonics. It's pretty much a perfected Sony MH1 by having much less of a bass boost. IMO it has great slightly downward sloping FR with excellent bandwidth. Treble is sweet and nicely extended. Mids are fleshed out with decent air (with right tips) and the bass is mostly sub bass focused.

My favorite tips are the comply s200 and mh1 tips. The s200 tips are wider bore and that particular foam is much different from regular comply foam. It's less dense and allows for less bass with a good seal.

While some much more expensive phones may have some greater technicalities, in micro detail or imaging, the Tenore is a tonal gem. It's simply fantastic IMO and my favorite for everyday listening.

Wow, that kind of tonal balance sounds right up my alley. Just to confirm - no treble spikes? Not downward sloping to the extent of Audezes?

P.S. Don't take the karma thing seriously. It just doesn't work like that here. No one really gives a sh1t about it. Think of it as a badge of honor. Heck, I even got one negative karma point. In the spirit of this statement, your request for specific karma points (0 / -10,000) has been denied. Instead, you are now assigned +36 and -146 for your karma points tally.

I've only heard the LCD3, very briefly, and in meet conditions. I really don't remember much about it.

I don't get any treble spikes. It's a great combination of smooth and sparkly. So not too smooth that it's dull and polite but not so sparkly it's either piercing or annoying. While I consider myself a midrange guy, it's the treble that makes or breaks an iem for me. Has to have good treble timbre and has to not be annoying.

Stock tips are small bore, so they are more bassy. At minimum try Sony hybrid tips or slightly wider bore.

I heard these three times.  The first two I was pretty impressed, especially for the price (~$40 at e-earphone).  Smooth, good tonal balance, a little sparkle up top and bass slightly north of neutral.  But then the last time I heard them it was 'boom-and-sizzle'.  I'm not sure what the differences were- damaged demo unit, wrong tips (they get mixed up at the displays), poor fit this time around... whatever.  I had a similar experience with the RE-400s:  Sounded great a few times, bad once, and great again.  If the curiosity around here is great enough, I'll pick up a set next week and send them out on a tour.  Cool?

^  Parhaps inadvertently the last time you may have tried the DX210-CB ("Carbo Basso", the bassy model) instead of the DX200-CT ("Carbo Tenore").

The bass boost on the 200s is centred around the sub-bass region, but, unlike the IE800s, for instance, it's very tastefully done — I'd easily take the Tenores over the IE800s any day. I can use the 200s for hours on end without any listening fatigue, which was not the case with the fairly bass-heavy IE800s (when I owned those), specially at louder volume levels. From mid-bass upwards, the Tenores are very, very linear and have excellent extension at both ends of the spectrum. I'm using stock medium tips.

The Tenores can be had for $35 on Amazon.co.jp (with free delivery), btw.

It was the Tenore for sure.  The Basso is for bass-heads IMO.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.   ;)

All the times I've heard the IE800, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.  To me it sounds like an IEM version of my DT990 or any number of Ultrasones.  I get such a metallic sound from them that I can almost taste metal in my mouth while listening to them.   :o  And I'm not all that treble sensitive.  I know with IEMs fit is everything and person to person sound will vary greatly.  Even when I listen to stuff I own, sometimes I'll not put them in just right and I'll be like, "What happened here?"  Too bad about the IE800s because they do have some fun bass, I really like their build quality, and I'm a sucker for innovative designs.

I also quite like the design of the IE800s, but that's where it mostly ended for me. Unlike the Senn's short (1.08m) and extremely microphonic cable (one of the worst offenders in that department), which does not allow for a cable over the ear fit (they were actually designed for a cable-down fit)—the IE800s also come with extremely expensive proprietary tips which easily come off the nozzles—, the Tenores have the right cable length (1.2m), low microphonics, can be worn with cable down or over the ears (zero microphonics with the latter), and use standard wide-bore tips (so lots of tip choices); and unlike the Senns, the Tenores do not have an extension, which makes the Senn cable rather heavy, thus forcing people (quite a few reports already) to readjust the housings continually.

And FWIW, for those who haven't seen the Tenores in the flesh, they don't look or feel cheap—I think they have a pretty cool design, actually.

It all makes 'perfect' sense now. Absolutely. And here I was thinking I wasn't very popular when, in fact, it was the exact opposite — what a relief!

I've only heard these with stock tips, which did them no favors in terms of fit, but when I did get a good fit, the sound was good, especially for the price. The aesthetics are nice too. I heard them as slightly warmer and bassier than how SGS perceives them, but it might be due to the fit. Overall, though, it's a very nice value, especially for the Japanese, who can get them for <$40.

Tom,

Take this post in the spirit in which it's written, ie no offence meant.

First off, I've been using stock medium tips from day one (almost 3 weeks now) and I get a perfect fit and seal.

Secondly, seems you also hear them "as slightly warmer and bassier than how [ I ] perceive them". Nothing wrong with that, obviously, but I'm surprised. Now, I have with me the ER4S, F111, FIBASS, Heaven S, EX800ST, HD800 & HD600 (and heard James' UERM only a few weeks ago—will be getting my own pair in a couple of weeks) and I'd never call these warm or even slightly warm. I know you like the FIBASS a lot and I, FWIW, would take these over the FIBASS & Heaven S, and I'm sure more than a handful of people with experienced ears—and on a blind test—would take the Tenores over the ER4S & F111 (I don't personally, but only just) and many other $300 - $500 phones. I'd even take the Tenores over my $900 FitEar Parterres Or KAEDEs.

Hey, I understand this is CS (and not HF), where using words such as "excellent", "spectacular", "brilliant", "stunning" or even "very good" seems to be almost forbidden or anathema; it appears one has to tread very carefully for fear of being called a fanboy or losing whatever credibility one may have — to say that these are "very nice value, especially for the Japanese, who can get them for <$40" is, to me, a HUGE understatement.

So, how do these sound compared to the IE8? I never owned the IE800, so that comparison's a bit lost on me.
