Same with me, Dave. I really like what Bruno Putzeys has done for the DIY community especially with the nCore NC400 module (and even more with the ExtremA Class A amp). Same goes for the "New Class D" team - extraordinary THD and IMD figures that do rival some of the more decent Class AB designs.

That said whilst it is very convenient to build a headamp sized desktop amp that could give me clean 400W the entry price is a bit scary. North of kilo-EUR can get me a very decent AB amp as well.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and ideas!

I've placed orders for the OS MT (via ojneg), Virtue one.3 w/ 130w PSU, Emotiva Airmotiv stands and 3m USS speaker cables/. Total is somewhere around $850. A friend of mine purchased the 2010i from Analogue Seduction and a emotiva mini-x a-100, so it should be fun comparing speakers and amps once we get them!

I hope this thread was helpful to others who might have been looking for sub-1k speakers as well  :)p7

Yeah, the next big thing at the high-end seems to be nCore 1200 based monos taking the place of the old ICEpower based monos from a few years back. The problem is they are coming in around $8-15K, which puts them square in the sights of traditional amps from Pass and Plinius.

If you ask me, this might be the next big thing - http://fr.devialet.com/

Still - I'm thinking on what amp to build for my KEF LS50ies. I've even been pondering on going the batshit crazy non-feedback way - http://www.lcaudio.com/index.php?page=31

The Devialets are interesting, but I don't think folks at the elite level really want a fully integrated product, as opposed to separate phono pres, DACs, linestages, etc. nCore monos on the other hand can potentially replace big traditional amps without otherwise disrupting the system. ICEpower was supposed to do that, but it never lived up to the hype.

Great thread, I am glad you are doing all the legwork Gunner.  I am thinking about picking up the 2010i to use with an old technics integrated my dad gave me.  Those Hsu's that Darren posted look pretty interesting as well.

Qu

I'll let you lnow how they are in a couple of weeks, unless you've already placed an order for them by that time! $295 isn't much for importing the 2010i from the UK and the HSUs are priced nicely and are more efficient as well.

Here is a link to a Master Class at Electronic Musician that may help with monitors:

I hope those interested can find some useful information, it is a pretty good article.

So my friend ordered the 2010i on Monday... and they were supposed to arrive today but no one was home to pick them up. So he'll actually have them tomorrow and he's gonna bring them over on the afternoon. Really quick shipping from the UK!
