Hey, I would if you really wanted. It's an easy kit, no cuts. Just some wood glue and solder.

Now you've got my interests pique'd... Yeah if you'd be willing to build me one, we can work something out in a PM! Your description of its tonality sounds like something that I'd really like. Plus it's small with its 4" drivers as well, so it'll fit onto my desk. Does it really go down to 45hz?!

Any suggestions for an amp? Or would the Virtue ONE.3 w/ upgraded PSU be a good choice for it? I'm a bit confused about speaker sensitivity and converting the ONE.3's 40 WPC @ 4ohm to 8ohm, as well as how loud the overnight sensation MT would get with it. Since the speakers are just mainly for private use, near field, I don't need them to get super loud.

A less expensive amp would be nice too.

The little Nuforce Icon amp is $179, but you only get 18W there before you hit 1% THD.

Depending on your room it might hit that low. With high SPL bass (talking 90dB+), you're going to hear port tube shuffling. Just the nature of the small cabinet and how it's tuned. The low sensitivity doesn't help. Something like 81dB/W according to the spec sheet (haven't verified). Assuming you're listening at 1m away with 2 speakers, that's about 84dB @ 1W and 94dB @ 10W. But like I said, if you try to push it beyond that you'll hear distortion from the speaker, not the amp likely.

Another concern might be your placement. I have mine quite close to a back wall, so stuffing the port tube is necessary. I still get great bass but it prevents it from being terribly boom (can still be a bit boomy at times).

Here's my own in-room response with 1/6th octave smoothing. This is in my living room with plenty of space to breath, not on my desk.

I have near-field, quasi-anechoic plots that I took if you're interested, but I think they're on my other hard drive.

In terms of amplification I run them off of a Parasound Z-amp. Picked mine up $100 used. Very good amp (not a shitty Class D) for a desktop application.

I have a little Nuforce amp and quite like it; actually had it powering my HE-6 for a while. The Icon2 (discontinued, but you can find them used for ~$200) has a usb dac built in. Not the last word in resolution or anything, but when desk space is at a premium I think the little all-in-one unit is hard to beat. I much preferred it over the equivalent Topping amp (which is a bit bigger anyways).

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

I like the little Virtue units, tried one on the A5s for whats worth. Probably won't be as crazy value as the OS but the D5s are very nice speakers as well.

I heard a 2 channel system from HSU Research that was very impressive.
Their speakers are dirt cheap and then they had a 15" sub.
Here's the speakers I heard:
http://hsuresearch.com/speakers.html
They have a 2.1 system for under $1000:
Hybrid 3 - 2.1 Package:
http://hsuresearch.com/products/hybrid3pkg.html

They have a 30 day return policy.
I am not affiliated with them at all, but I was really impressed.

P.S. Sorry I forgot you wanted powered speakers. The sub is powered and the speakers need very little power. They like to show the speakers with a cheap 20 year old receiver just to show that you can get great sound with a cheap amp.

For amplification just pick up a used stereo receiver. Or if you want something small go for https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-apa150-150w-power-amplifier--300-812 or http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers/products/a100

The kef x300a seems to be more tuned towards consumers though, si I'm worried that it might not have the sound that I'm looking for.

The X300A is tuned to be flat like other KEF speakers. Only thing is that it has a rear-facing port.

For anyone else interested in getting a pair of bookshelf speakers, there's a guy selling the Adam F7s for just $500/pair, excluding shipping/paypal. They're normally $900/pair
