I emailed Emotiva and they are still selling b-stock mini-x and upa-200s for $150 and $230 respectively. Free shipping and no taxes (unless you're in TN). May just have to go for the upa-200 instead and stack the gungnir on top of it.

Well I tried out the sc204s at Sam Ash yesterday with my dx90s. Unfortunately the sc204s came just right out of the box, so they had absolutely no burn-in at all.

The sc204s were good but they just didn't feel right to me. Something about their tonal balance and presentation wasn't to my taste. They were pretty neutral of course (I guess if they had them further way from the wall, the bass would have been tighter), but in a difference sense from the UERMs. The UERMs presents everything in a less obvious, more smooth way. The UERMs bypass the room and the ear of course, so in a sense they're probably more true to neutral.

I think I may have even preferred the Polk Audios monitor 40s (w/ onkyo tx8255) in my dad's room over the sc204s. I had to turn down the treble on them, but they had pretty good tonal balance.

Honestly i think the gungnir would have been way better than the dx90 for speakers cause the gungnir is just smoother and more pleasant to listen to than the dx90. Obviously I couldn't bring the gungnir to the store... but it probably wouldn't have changed my decision of not getting them. Perhaps it's due to the the design of the Eves just really being for studio monitoring, and hearing every detail, noise, and problems that a track may have.

I have to admit though, the eve studio monitors were very pretty looking in person, and the sc204s were especially tiny! They did surprise me with the the amount of bass that they were able to output for such small speakers.

Now it comes down to the Q Acoustics 2010i and Overnight Sensations MT. They're about the same size, but the OS MT is designed for near-field listening whereas the 2010i is designed for small rooms. The OS MT kit is currently $136/pair and free shipping but I don't know how much it would cost to have OJneg to build me a pair and ship them to me. The 2010 is $295 shipped from UK.

I don't know if I should push my budget a bit and get the Virtue one.3 with the upgraded PSU or just stick with the b-stock UPA-200. The speakers will mainly be for casual listening since my UERM is still my main setup.

What do you guys think?  :-S

I'd do it pro-bono. Just pay parts and shipping.

If you can swing it for the Virtue, that's what I'd get. I've never been particularly impressed with the Emotiva electronics that I've heard, even taking the prices into account. The Virtue also leaves a path for future upgrades, like a linear or battery supply. It's expensive for a Tripath, but it's one of the best I've ever come across.

Would the 130W PSU be a good place to start for the PSU upg, or are there better choices at that price? I guess having a good amp to start out with just leaves me with speaker upgs to worry about in the future, when I have a better room setup and space.

Yeah, I don't think you're going to be able to beat it without spending at least the price of the Virtue itself on a power supply. Core Audio's linear is capable of a massive 10 amps at 30V, but those are $800+.

The 30v/10A JT Dynamic linear PSU will do 10A at 30V, $249.99 but that's nearly 2x the price of the 30v/130w PSU and I'd rather not push my budget atm.

What about stereo amplifiers of old? I'd trade a Tripath for an older Marantz any day.

Same, but space is a consideration here.

Right, I think the only switcher that can potentially compete with the best of A and A/B amps is the nCore, and even then I'm unconvinced of the hype until I can do real comparisons myself. The Virtue is the size of a can of soda though, and that's hard to match with traditional discrete circuits. You can do it with a chip amp, but most of the ones I've heard sound worse than the Virtue.
