really nice reviews! those are so pretty. definitely sounds like a good buy.
makes me want to get something. but I'd need to get something really tiny and probably active and cheaper to justify it :(

sorry for hi-jacking but is there anything in the 100 range that is rather small but sounds OK at low-moderate volumes?
like, fits-in-suitcase small.

Thanks! No worries about hijacking since I've already purchased speakers. The thread is open for all sub-1k speaker discussion :D.

Maybe you can look into getting the audionengine A2? You can find the older version for about $100-$150 and those definitely fit into a suitcase. The newer version has USB input as well but costs a bit more. I have the older version and they sound fine at low-moderate volume after a little bit of EQ in the bass. They do sound much better when using a good dac though.

Or perhaps the philips sb7220? I bought them for about $67 after maxvla suggested them and they do actually sound much much better than reviews say they do. They DO scale with gear. It's overkill with my gungnir but actually manages to sound really great out of them. Of course they don't have any subbass and no real soundstage or stereo seperation but for casual listening I think they're awesome. They manage to sound pretty good on bluetooth as well but not as good as using line-out from a dac. They do require a bit of EQ to sound good though. Bass should be toned down, and the treble turned up a little bit. Unfortunately they're a bit more expensive at $85 now but they do fit your budget and are very very portable.

cool - well it's quite a bit sub 1k... :)
yeah, the A2 are great, but... they're in the 300 range here, so about 3x what I was hoping to pay. :p unfortunately.
hmm, that philips one looks cool but I was hoping for something that did a bit of soundstaging at least. :( wireless and whatnot seems like unnecessary features in my case.
I might like it if I try it though, so not ruling it out.

thanks!

So since gunner said it's okay to hijack a bit, I'm wondering what speakers to get as well. I'm kind of leaning toward the Wherfdale Diamond 10.1s, which would be a bit smaller (maybe?) than my current Pioneer SP-BS41LR speakers and sound a bit better? I'm looking for something that sounds a bit "cleaner". In my current setup, the BS42LRs sound a bit too muddy in the upper bass and lower midrange, and the treble is rolled off without any EQ. I'd be sharing the amp duties between the Pioneer VSX-920k receiver for the summer and the Emotiva a-100 during college season.
EDIT: Has anyone heard the DALI Zensor 1 before? That seems like a potential contender to the Diamond 10.1.

Mainly, I'd like something that has a nicer center stage than the BSes. When I went to a Magnoila in Best Buy recently and demoed some Martin Logan electrostats and other fancy speakers, there seemed to be a center stage that just floated forward with the vocalists in it. I want some of that in my speakers instead of the flat blob of center stage that the Pioneers are delivering. Also, nice off-axis response would be really nice too.

The Wharfedale is worth checking out, the Dali I'm not familiar with but Stereophile tested them a few years ago. http://www.stereophile.com/content/dali-zensor-1-loudspeaker-measurements

You may also want to consider some factory direct models like Ascend's CBM-170 or Aperion's Intimus 5B. When you cut out dealer margins, you can spend a lot more on cabinets, drivers, and crossovers. Lightweight monitors are also easily shipped back if you don't like them.

Most of Dali's I've heard had a rather U-shaped sound signature. Some folks like it, but I got bored really fast. The word also is that their dual tweeter assembly is nonsense.

I'm with Dave on this - get locally made direct sold speakers. The Q-Acoustics 2020ies are also worth checking out.

Hmm, I'm not so interested in the Diamond 10.1s now that their successor is out: http://www.wharfedale.co.uk/product.php?pid=15

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll look around more at speakers that are sold in the US directly from the manufacturer to see if I can get something better sounding for the money.
By the way, has anyone heard these? http://www.chanemusiccinema.com/A1rx-c

Yup. The higher-end Dalis with that I have heard. Not great. A single Air Circ or RAAL or high quality AMT will do a way better job.

Whatever works best.

I went from M-Audio BX5's connected to he Pico DAC to the Logitech S715 connected to the Pico DAC. It is a step down but not a major step down. For casual listening the S715 does many things right and needs little space.

I do intend to go for amplified monitors again. For now the S715 is good enough and for detailed listening I have my headphones.

For relatively little money portable speakers can be better than their prices suggest...

I've heard the Epicon 6 and they weren't all that special. The sound was dynamic enough, tho I couldn't hear the magic of dual tweeters. I'm pretty sure they overlap for most of the range and instead the money could be put into using a decent single tweeter. I just don't see the problem such a design could solve.
