Starting impressions thread here:

Astell & Kern AK120
  • Really nice interface. Thumb turnie knob thing is nice and works well. At first I thought it was kinda ghey, but it really does work well.
  • UI was logically laid out and responsive. Top notch, unlike that DX100 disaster of yesteryear. I didn't need to fuck with stuff for it to do what I wanted it to do.
  • Much smaller than I thought it was. It's a very nice footprint.
  • Good sound. Good plankton. Good microdynamics. Lacking in power and slam - not surprising considering its size.
  • No treble nasties. Maybe slightly forgiving, but well within what I would consider a realistic sound.
  • It plays back hires (not that it makes much of a difference compared to good 16/44)
  • Too expensive for me.
  • Used with UERM and tracks I was familiar with.
  • I might have to agree that it's the finest audio at $1200 at that size.
Schiit Asgard II / Bifrost
  • Mini-Mjolnir / Gungnir combo (My Mjolnir now is much more mellow after break-in.) A little less slam, macro-dynamics, bass precision. Otherwise very similar sounding to the Mjolnir/Gungnir. New Asgard is very different from old one. The one old had a little fuzzy and warm thing going on that worked well with Grados. The Asgard II is cleaner and more neutral sounding. HD600 sounded great - really awesome - from the Asgard II / Bifrost combo.

Listened to the Centrance HiFi-M8 with my iPod Touch and UERMs. I liked it, but at that price "like it" is not going to pry open my wallet.

Most impressive thing I've heard today in terms of hitting the sweet-spot on the price-performance curve are the teeny-weeny, $500/pair Vanatoo active near-field speakers.

There is a pair of Abyss headphones here. I didn't listen to them today.

Centrance HiFi-M8
  • Flat dynamics.
  • Overly polite and forgiving for me. Reminds me of the Burson HA160.
  • Not subjectively bass-lite (it does have mid-bass), but low bass seems completely missing.
  • Tried with familiar recordings and UERM, HD600, and HE500.
  • I think I like the DACPort better.
Where is the Abyss?

The Abyss/Liquid Glass are in the Atrium 226.

Agreee on the Vanatoo and really liked the MSB room, probably going to get an Analog Dac on demo.  There is a Luxman DA-06 DAC in the YG room.

I thought the cable co was going to have the LAu - I guess I just assumed that is what they would take along

I asked the guy from Lynx if they were working on a Thunderbolt interface card for the Hilo.  He said, "I can't really talk about that," which I took to mean, "yes, but be patient."

Didn't get to hear the KEF X300a, because they were demoing the LS50 non-stop.  That's a really good-sounding speaker for the money.  I'm guessing it's flat down to at least 45 Hz, which is pretty spectacular for such a small box.

Cable Co does have Lau and Abyss, have to hit it tomorrow.  Spotted them on the way out after the show was closing.  They are in front of the Sony room at Crystal Ballroom C1 Hilton.
Best rooms I heard today (could flip depending on genre/track; 1-has better genre bandwidth):
(Most listening in Hilton today, Atrium/Headphonium tomorrow)

1-Venture/Precision/Phasure NOS 1-Hilton Monarch Ballroom 1-Saw two guys sitting there all day listening, can't blame them, it was that good. Will go back.

2-Tenor/MSB/Yg-Hilton 1005-w/ the right track, WOWZERS!  Will go back.
___
1-AK120-It's the real deal.  Not better than the best separates but damned close for the convenience/packaging.  Best all-in-one I've heard yet.  I never liked the AK100 much, nor the DX100.  The AK120 kicks it up a whole other level, unfortunately.  I AB'd the 100 and 120 side by side, no contest.  Better resolution, detail, micro dynamics, clarity, imaging.  Apparently same analog stage, only the DAC side changed.  This is the first device that has got me to the point where I could see myself going for the convenience over that last Nth of performance.  Most people's Nth is like 2-3 levels of performance for me which is unacceptable.  The 120 really gets me to an acceptable level of performance where I don't feel compromised.

Heard my 4th Leben now, I'm sorry, they suck.  Muddy, hazed over, just crap. Zero articulation.  I thought maybe it was speakers but they had a Line Magnetic Tube amp sitting next to it.  I asked the rep to switch out the Leben and everything got fixed.  I hate Leben w/ a passion, I will never listen to another again.  They all sound ridiculously low-fi.

King Sound was there, no headphones though, they didn't get shipped yet.  The speakers were disappointing tbh.  Probably one of the most pronounced E-stat colorations I've heard.  Timbre was completely wrong and fake.  By the time the rep got to the second track, I assumed it was the same album due to the terrible tone and inaccuracy.  He said it was a different artist and album!!  Love it when speakers make all you tracks sound the same, good job!!

Harbeth 30 sounded good except for the bass which was waaaaaay off!  Not even close, really fucked up.

Realized I don't like Heil AMT drivers after hearing 3 different examples.  Poor treble articulation and extension.  Dull, bleh.

Meh/expected better:
Audio Note-lacked clarity, detail, and articulation.
Sony
Wilson (Alexia)-probably best of the bunch in this category, I just don't get along w/ Wilson.  Just sounds boring to me. No major errors.

Antelope Rubicon was pretty decent.  For those that like a SS analytical listen, I can't imagine it getting any better.  This was through the integrated amp.  Would love to hear it as a DAC to a bitchin Tube amp.  Very curious.  The integrated headamp was waay too bright and harsh in the treble, bass was present on the HD800.  They had to apply upsampling to smooth it out to acceptable levels.  After that, sounded like a much improved version of the Lynx Hilo headamp.  Very pretty I must say.  Though I get the sense MSB would be money better spent based on my listen tot he transport in the Tenor room.  Yummy!!

Spent good time talking to Steve Nugent at Empirical and the guys at Lynx.  Good stuff.  Trying to get Lynx to add I2S and an SD Card slot so they could blow away Invicta sales.

Btw, Mike Mercer and George Cardas were much better behaved this year.  Can't say I got too much from the panel discourse myself so will pass tomorrow, but others probably benefited.

You guys suck. Now I want the AK120 again. Especially since a coworker wants to buy my RW AK100.
