I don't know if it's a larger shell or not.  But FWIW, the RE-600 fits me just fine without any issues, much as the RE-400 does.

Not sure, but I think it felt the same.

Interesting how the AK120 wet you chaps more than it did me. I did some side-by-side comparisons of the DX100, AK120, AK100 mods, & the HM-901 and felt the AK120 to sound a little thinner than the DX100 & HM-901. Practicality-wise though it's much more convenient naturally.

This might have been the first system which I actively disliked. The midrange was meh, didn't have anything close to the clarity that I was expecting. Bass response seemed totally incohesive and "out of tone" (does that make sense?) with the panel. And when I stood up to leave the room, I took one step and it was like someone flipped a LPF at 1kHz. The same effect existed with the JansZen, but it wasn't nearly as pronounced. I don't see how anyone could live with that in their own system.

That's always how it is with Martin Logan. They are the Bose of ESLs. They spend all of their time and effort coming up with clever crossover names that they can trademark, so there's nothing left over to develop a panel/woofer combo that doesn't sound like a giant dog turd.

When I visited PS Audio HQ in Boulder several years back, they were using a ML Descent in their reference room along with Avalon Eidolons. The pairing was just horrible, the ML sub was a sloppy mess that was audibly bottoming out and just generally sounded like the bass usually heard coming out of a '93 Honda Civic. I was too polite to mention it, and Paul wasn't there that day anyway, but that may have been part of the reason why their GCC amps sounded so bad if that's what they were using to tune them.

Well TBH, I haven't heard the DX100 yet.  I was going to try and get an audition sometime between now and when I'm ready to buy (a few weeks from now).  And if I couldn't get an audition, I was just going to buy it blind knowing that it could be returned if I hated it.

But vs the HM-901, I definitely prefer the AK120.  For me, the HM-901's controls are just way too stiff.  Both wheels take a little more force than I was expecting.  And by a little more force I mean a lot more force.  It's a small annoyance now, but I'm sure that will turn into a permanent irritation later on under ownership conditions.

Did I miss it?  Did anyone get a chance to listen to the Kingsound electrostatics?

first page

King Sound was there, no headphones though, they didn't get shipped yet.  The speakers were disappointing tbh.  Probably one of the most pronounced E-stat colorations I've heard.  Timbre was completely wrong and fake.  By the time the rep got to the second track, I assumed it was the same album due to the terrible tone and inaccuracy.  He said it was a different artist and album!!  Love it when speakers make all you tracks sound the same, good job!!

From memory, the DX100 sounded much more powerful and dynamic, but with nasty digititus typically of most but not all ESS crap. (even the best ESS based DACs I've heard still have a hint of it). The DX100 UI was shit: Shit layout and slow. For such a huge brick (DX100), I would rather keep my Sony X and velcro it to an ALO RX3.

Using what phones?  And yes the 901 has more bloomier, colored bass so it would seem thinner because it's more accurate.  Told Fang about that at CES.  Amps are not their specialty yet.  IME, Fang tunes his amps to certain phones and you sort of hope you'll be fine w/ other stuff.  The 901 would be a good pairing w/ the RE272 but less so the RE400/600 ironically.  EF6 sounds fine w/ HE6 but terrible w/ HD800.  The stock amp on the original 801 is one of the worst amps I've ever heard.

The other problem I have w/the DX100 was the flat 2D presentation.  When you get past spending $300 on a device, you shouldn't have that problem IMO.  That and the Android OS imposing its self on the music player trying to do a million different things at once.
