Waiting for someone to post their impressions of the Abyss. Want to see whether there's consensus on whether it's an overpriced POS or well worth the wait and price in gold.

@Anax, which YGs did you listen to in the Tenor/MSB/YG room? I heard Tenor amps a while back with a Watt/Puppy system, back when the amps were priced around $20K USD. I see they've upped their MSRP to beyond double that for their monoblocks. Yikes....

Can`t wait to hear what you guys think of the Abyss and LAU combo.  Given what MF said about the LAU ability to drive ortho`s this should be an ultimate combo.  I have to know if the $5000 Abyss phones are any good, especially at that price.

Not this year from any of us that I know of.  Tyll was the star of the show, I think his presence helped keep George within the confines of normal human behavior.

Yeah, I was expecting the 120 to sound like a blatant cash grab and middle finger to psychotic audiophiles.  Nope, it sounded real good via UERM.

RE600 tomorrow for me, w/ Malvalve, Bakoon HPA2 current amp, Rx3b again (single ended and w/ IEMs this time) and it's desktop amp.  Schiit's latest and maybe the Hifiman EF5, maybe confirm the 901 from my last audition in January.  Lau+Abyss.

YG Sonja 1.2 $72K

Tenor 175S $55K

Tenor Line1/Power1 $75K

Luxman DA-06 $6K; sounded way better than the Luxman P1u amp we heard which to me was barely above average.  The main problem I had was occasionally hearing the lower freqs coming from the bottom of the YGs.  There was also a missing center channel a la maxvla.  Had to sit one seat over to get proper vocals.  Ran into the same problem w/ the KEF blades/Parasound rig in January.  I'm sure they just need to be repositioned.  Took me out of the moment a couple times but the rest was very, very nice.

MSB transport (unknown model, will investigate)

Why does decent sound have to cost this much?!  I mean really....

I only listened to the Abyss/LAu for a few minutes, sounded nice, but the fit was weird for me, pads were wonky.  It was not ideal, obviously, in a room where speakers were the main attraction.  The speakers were off when I was listening part of the time but I didn't want to hog the room.

The YG speakers are really nice and I noticed the same thing as you Mike, in that room, lack of a center image, said it to the guys on the way home.  Maybe it wasn't dialed in yet.

The other room I liked was MBL, kinda like being in the room with the performers.

Works well?

Over there they seem to be seeing flaky UI and no you see em now you don't SD cards.

I put about 4 different sd cards in the AK120 and 1 in the AK100.  They all worked.  No bugs, no glitches w/ the UI.  All I did was access the files, hit play and goof around w/ the touch/swipe EQ.  Everything worked as intended.  Can't complain about a problem when I didn't have one.

No idea what firmware they are running, how many times they screwed around w/ their sd card while plugged into a PC/MAC.  I can think of about 4-5 reasons people have SD card problems that are basically their own fault due to user error.

MBL added.  Guess I'm not done w/ the Hilton...

I caught Marv awkwardly staring at me when I was listening to the HD800 at the Schiit booth. Maybe I was making some sort of face. Sometimes I do that when my brain drifts off. Was going to introduce myself, but I couldn't find him after that.

Headphonium was cool. I thought the ALO flagship amp was kind of subpar TBH. HD800 was ok, LCD-2 sounded poor. Both headphones sounded strangely distant and incoherent to me. Maybe I was soaking up too much of the crazy from all these audiophiles in the vicinity. Neither headphone sounded as bad running off the balanced Schiit stack. I thought it sounded great with those bad boys. In fact, all of the Schiit gear sounded good with the 'phones they paired 'em with.

Either way, Jason told me a bit about the new statement amp. Said it's going to be a full on integrated amp with multiple inputs and outputs. Also said it will have a relay-based attenuator and a microprocessor to work the magic. I'm hoping it can accept voice commands.

AK pleasantly surprised me. I had just finished using the terrible laggy UI of that Hifiman player with the HE-6 and was pleasantly surprised with how responsive the AK was. Slick finish reminds me of my own ZuneHD. Wasn't too crazy about the sound though. Had to push the volume up to max in order to listen to the HD650. Maybe that's just my fault for comparing the HD650 on a dedicated amp to a PMP. Also, I had forgot how uncomfortable headphones are when they haven't been broken in yet. Not fun.

I'll make a post about the loudspeakers tomorrow.

PS. Tyll is awesome. People were taking pictures with him and everything. Next show, I'll remember to bring some headphones for him to sign.

AK120 +UERM wins.  Most desktop amps suck w/ the HD650.  Don't do that anymore!  :))  Though I can't blame you, the reps put the 650 there which I thought was kind of odd.
