Crossfeed, how?
« on: March 28, 2013, 12:13:12 PM »

I've read somewhere regarding music tuning, which talks about using the right crossfeed will make the sound more speaker-like. However, I've tried manipulating several crossfeed plugins on f2k, but to no avail as I couldn't get something which sounds pleasant  :vomit: One Head-fier in SS/HA developed one, I tried it, the biggest change is most of my "details" aka treble was gone from the headphone. The sounds felt muddy. I don't think I understand what's going on when I tweaked the bars on the UI, but I suppose that crossfeed shouldn't make the music murky.

Is software based crossfeed good enough? Or should I try hardware based xfeed like the coming soon Fiio E12 or the Meier-Audio ones.

Hi, in my post on EQ'ing the HD800 at the bottom I mention the crossfeed I use.

The waves plugins are available for both windows and mac. You just need to find a music player that supports VST's.

Winamp/Foobar etc.

Btw, crossfeed will center the sound image, it will not project it in front of you. The fuzzy center image thread in the amp/source section explains it all very well (LFF).

Forget the e12 crossfeed, that is one of the worst crossfeed circuits I have heard. Meier does xfeed better. headroom was decent with my old 90s amp but i haven't heard the later models. So far as software xfeed try the new subtle setting of the new version of the isone vst plugin. Headfit isn't bad either if you want a tuneable yet subtle plugin.

The only software based crossfeed I've liked (and actually used) is the built-in one for headphones in JRiver MC. I like it because pretty much every other software (and some hardware) based crossfeeds tend to mess up the frequency response.

You can DL a demo of JRiver MC to try it. It's not free. It's a product you have to pay for and I think it shows. (Free plug-in = 85% fail, 15% success) I've met and have continued to talk with Matt Ashland, CTO over at JRiver. They are serious about sound quality (and extremely good at numbers and algorithms) there.

I have JRMC and that xfeed is decent but the subtle setting on isone and headfit is still more subtle. BS2B or the Naive Xfeed plugin however doesn't cut it for me. In the end though... no xfeed is best since headphones are designed to sound best with the frequency response they were designed for. For some reason there is no xfeed plugin that is perfect.

Waves has a demo version of Center. I know its ridiculously expensive, but its part of a mixing/mastering bundle.

If by manipulating plugins you mean playing around with the sliders, chances are that almost all randomly arrived at settings will sound bad.

I stick to Lavry DA11's image sliders http://www.lavryengineering.com/lavry_forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=976
