Anyone who is skeptical, but has the time to actually read a few pages explaining why there can be a difference in "bit perfect" players, can post a request for the links...

I'd love to read those few pages, if you could post the links. This "sonic differences in bit-perfect players" thing is quite interesting! (Not that I would be able to discern said differences)

I didn't notice a significant difference in sound between JRMC and Foobar. Foobar is free of course, and can look basically however you could possibly want it to look, but configuring skins can be challenging depending on how much effort the author put in. Some skins are little more than skeletons and require you to Google 50 different .dll files to actually function. Others are completely packaged and even come with .exe installers.

It will decode AC3 and DTS, any lossless or lossy container, DSF and DFF files or read SACDs straight from an .ISO disc image. It will do real time DSD to PCM conversion with or without UHF filtering (or pass DSD via DoP), and supports WASAPI/Event and Kernel Streaming output. Pretty much all of those features require additional components to be installed, but that usually amounts to little more than downloading a file and tossing it into the components folder.

Both versions can be remotely controlled, but I can't say whether Gizmo or FoobarCon is better on Android because I haven't used them - I use MPDroid for my VortexBox. Foobar DOES have a good half a dozen remote controllers on the Play Store though, whereas with JRMC you get Gizmo or nothing.

JPlay if you're into that also works with both programs. Ultimately I would say that what you get for your $50 is convenience and some ease of use.

This is my favorite layout btw: http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2013/018/3/4/fooayian_1_1_by_ayian-d5qkqpg.jpg

ASIO4All has a problem with low frequencies on some things I try it with. I don't know if there's a high-pass filter on or if it's just a program coding error.

Winamp (1998) to musicMatch to iTunes to Windows Media Player to JRiver (today). Prior to Winamp, I had numerous toys like RealPlayer Pro, a bunch of DOS stuff, some MOD players, etc.

Foobar has been tried a few times but it was never stable on either platform I tried it on.

Windows Media Player renders slightly wider channel separation with MP3's than iTunes (to my ears) so I went with WMP for the last 5 years. I encoded my entire collection into WMA lossless. Then I decided to try better sound modes today and experiment with WASAPI and ASIO. I went for JRiver on a trial. I like its features a lot! I have the best EQ I've ever had on my cans because of the parametric EQ. It seems more dynamic to my ears as well.

I played with the crossfeed a bunch and was surprised at how not stuffy it was. It really buried some of the micro-detail, though.

Finally getting around to trying Media Center 19 on my OSX music server.  This version finally has gotten rid of a few of the little bugs that were keeping me from making the leap.  I think the Mac version is mature enough now for me to stick with it.  I'm already enjoying tinkering with a few of the settings.

Now to find a remote option I like for the iPad/Phone.  There seem to be several options.

This is an old thread, just want to mention that the best audio control app I've ever used is jremote on ipad for jriver.  Lots of playlist add/remove/reorder type options and very smooth scrolling album art ui etc..

Recently updated my VortexBox to version 2.3. Squeezelite and Orange Squeeze on Android:  headbang

Definitely beats MPD in terms of usability, and totally worth the 5 bucks.

Anyone else using PureMusic or Audirvana on a Mac?  Seems like both are not stable at all for me. I'm trying to figure out if it's the old mini I'm using as my server, or the software.

I've had Media Center up and running all week with no problems, super stable.  Maybe it's a sign.
