I have to say I was impressed when JRiver organized all my music across 4 hard drives within a few minutes of first using it.  I actually had no idea where some of this crap was anymore.

The video sorting seems flawed, though.  It got a handful of flash videos I made, a bunch of logos from the opening screens of games and programs... and a single "adult" video, which it stuck in front of it all just to be awkward.  It somehow managed not to find a single movie or episode of anything.

The players seems to bug out if I move around between too many albums, but it's easy enough to close and re-open it, I guess.

Foobar2000 or latest Audacious (git) combined with nice directory structure.

Winamp, w/ VLC for video. I've spent damn near a decade and a half with the former, so I'm pretty used to it.

Foobar, like nearly all open source software, is ok to begin with and has nearly unlimited potential for personal tuning. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some correlation between which members here have ever cracked open an ortho and what media player they use  p;)

I tried foobar back in the day but at the time I was reformatting drives faster than I could dial it in so I just quit on it.  I also have a bit of paranoia about mixing and matching open source stuff that may not play nice together.  One reason I've waffled on the Android verse among others.  I don't like surprises at the wrong time so I try to minimize my exposure to the unforeseen.

I have friends that started to "attempt" Android programming... it was bizarre pre-4.0, now its just needlessly confusing.

The only problem with foobar is that it still has playback glitches with my toslink dac. Musicbee has no such problems and sounds a little better IMO.

I tried MusicBee about a week ago.  Just to see what the current version is like.  I imported my entire library and I was able to customize the view to make use of some of my custom tags.  I found its library management to be better than Foobar for my needs and easy enough to configure.

I had problems with playback.  My current USB DAC is an EMU 0204 USB interface that has sucky drivers.  When doing WASAPI and switching between 16/44.1 and 24/88.2 it would play at either half speed or double speed.  Maybe that behavior is due in part to the sucky EMU drivers.  But Foobar and JRriver are able to switch sample rates properly when using the EMU.

I tried MusicBee too. It's nice but no while playing with the settings I decided to ditch it again. It does some things a lot better than MediaMonkey.

Nitpick: foobar2000 is closed-source.

Foobar200 (DUI+ Facets + wasapi) - for music.
MPC-HC + madVR with isonepro for binaural downmix - for movies.
