Just found out Audeze has a DAC/Amp combo dubbed the Deckard out as well, seems both Hifiman and Audeze are competing with each other again this year.

Looks like an odd entry product... Mid-range DAC/amp combo... Interesting.

Yeh, it's good that Audeze is paying some attention to the > $1k market margin. Hopefully these will sound as good as there commanding price tags.

Silly tech trademark labels aside, the EL-8 specification sheet conspicuously includes:
Quote (selected)
Total harmonic distortion    Less than 0.01% (1kHz, 1mW)
Efficiency    102dB / 1mW
Spec-ing 0.01% (-80dB) THD @ 102dB is a sit-up-and-take-notice, boss/mic-drop/shot-calling act that clearly reflects the pride Sankar and Alex feel about what they've accomplished. Sure, many headphones have already achieved this for 3rd harmonic and higher (D3+), but getting 2nd harmonic (D2) down to these levels shows that Audeze knows WTF they're doing in simulation and design. If true, Audeze really has created a state of the art "planar-dynamic" motor (trace-arrangement+magnet-arrangement) that is technically superior to anything than has come before.  In the end, a 2nd harmonic level this low probably has little subjective effect compared to the driver's frequency-response/linear-distortion [plus we know nothing of the bass distortion yet.] Nonetheless, if true, <0.01%@1khz@102dB is accomplishment to be noted and appreciated, as it moves the technical bar for headphones forward.

Just noticed Audeze's specs.

EL-8 says "driver size: 100mm", and I'm going like... "that's ****ing massive!"

Just for perspective, the old LCD line says diaphragm surface area is like 39.8cm^2, which translates to about 3980mm^2. Applying surface area equation for a circle gives me 35.5mm for the radius, which means the diaphragm of the old LCD line is about 71mm.

So does that mean the actual surface area of the EL-8 is even bigger than the old LCD line? Hm......
