Greetings pirates,

I come before you as a humble lurker, expelled from a dark place, seeking asylum, enlightenment and entertainment.

('Yeah, yeah, I'm banned from Head-Fi.' - 'Why did such a thing happen to you, good sir?' - 'Because I told an admin to go fuck himself.' - 'Well now, that is no gentlemanly thing to do! Why would you do such a thing?' - 'Cause he 'redacted' all my posts supporting a user who found the sound of a number of DACs indistinguishable.' )

Also: I listen to country music. Only. And I'm a european atheist, who's hard left politically and dislikes guns and trucks. Go figure. Waylon forever though.

I would advice not to try to impose your beliefs onto someone(s) else(s). If anything, get something out of the site by learning and perhaps make friends.

It is usually the case that most folks (including me) believe that they are right, while in reality we just think we are right. Many times we are wrong.

Also, I always wondered about the social situation in West Europe. It is probably my ignorance which leads to over generalization, but the times I've been there I have seldom seen pick-up trucks and most folks seem inclined to avoid guns. There seems to be a leftist climate these days. Bare in mind that it has not always been the case, and that certain things seem to go through cycles. And to me it is seldom clear which cycle is the "right one". In my opinion, there are practicalities on a case by case situation, but that usually lies in the details instead of the general trends.

*Anyway, I don't mean to make you feel uncomfortable or lecture you (anymore than I already did). Enjoy your stay and karma points for both joining and being up front.

A European liberal atheist who only listens to country music but dislikes guns and trucks.

Given country music's finite subject matter, I guess that pretty much leaves songs about small towns, trailer parks, farm equipment, fishing, being an unwed teenage mother, ill-fitting blue jeans, moonshine, lip gloss, the sun setting and/or rising, Nashville, divorce, cowboy boots, and sagebrush.

Welcome aboard!

Thanks :D
Now I could of course go on and on about how there is really no genre in music with lyrics as profound as country music (with the exceptions of catch-all 'genres' like 'folk' or 'rock') and that there is no genre dealing with the fullness of life (including not only trying to get laid in a club but such things as nostalgia, loss, getting older and obsolete, regret etc.) and start naming songs to listen to. But instead I have a much more pressing question: whats that country song about lip gloss? :D

It means he likes Taylor Swift-Kirosia.

It means I like Billy Joe Shaver (except when he's saying retarded shit), Buffy Sainte-Marie, Dave Alvin, Jamey Johnson, Sturgill Simpson, Tim McGraw, Tom T. Hall, Willie Nelson ... and I really really like Bobby Bare, Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker and Waylon Jennings.

So how hard left are you? Some people here think I am fascist, but in some way, I too can be considered really hard left because I am a heart an anarchist (anti-statist / law and freedom without force from government). Obviously, this doesn't work well in practical terms, but it's an ideal that I believe we as humans should strive toward.

Now as far as your really "hard left", do you mean the the kind of hard left which believes most people are stupid and too fragile, therefore government and its laws must be forced upon you for your own good? Most people who claim they are on the "left" tend more toward despotism than they realize.

Despotism = no freedom. Like forcing you do something. Like giving part of your paycheck to the government so they can mismanage your "pension". Or buy health insurance with specific mandated coverage at higher than free market prices against your own will.

BTW, I hate guns too because of their very nature as deadly weapons. But I also feel that given the opportunity, one should be obligated to learn how to use and keep guns - just in case. "Democracy" works better if the folks doing the governing know that the people they are governing can fight back. I'm sure Gene Roddenberry would like to think humans are super evolved and selfless creatures (first three seasons of ST:TNG), but in reality, the great human equalizer is application of force.

I'm more inclined to think that laws are/should be forced on us, not for our own good, but for the good of others.

As for being a leftie, I don't think I have ever heard a better model than from each according to their ability, to each according to their need. Maybe that makes me a Marxist, but I am yet to read the book and find out. It's an ideal, and whether any system that calls itself socialist/communist/etc has ever actually implemented it, I doubt.

Welcome Koloth  ahoy

Are you Dutch? Waylon of the Common Linnets, interesting and yes he is really good.

Left? Yay for socialist sympathies I guess. Please do not be of the politically correct kind, there are too many of them without spine because Sub Zero ripped their spines out when they whimped out in the face of criticism. I detest socialist whimps as the Netherlands are plagued with them while they misguide the sheeple.

You doubt it? What do you call bread lines, grey box apartments and Ladas? China and Vietnam tried it and learned it was stupid so they quit. I guess that's why Asians don't do Marxism in the US or elsewhere. Anyway, economics is a whole other thread. Read Rousseau with a critical eye and see how forced egalitarianism leads to despotism and slavery. George Orwell says hi.
