I do not get it. I used to read mostly positive things about the DT880. There was also the Darth Beyer DT880 which was widely loved by fans comparable to the AKG Sextett fans. A good Sextett is lovely with well produced music.

The DT880-250 was once on my short list until the AKG K240DF crossed my path. If you can recommend the DT880-250 to a midrange lover on a lower volume, I might consider it over the DT250-250.

I wouldn't say the 880s do mids that well, actually the opposite, kinda recessed in that range.  And oh the piercing peak in the highs.  Still I kept them for a few years.

What about the old 600 Ohms models?

I am going to accept Budget-Fi and Mid-Fi anyway. I am already a disciple of the KSC-75 order.

Beyerdynamic is Beyerdynamic. Treble mountains of false detail and abysmal quality control. DT 880s also tend to get killed by hair. Unless you're Mr. Clean hair will get on the driver, the bass will rattle, you'll have to perform surgery to remove it, and eventually will fuck up and kill the headphone after some years. Only recordings of genres that don't have the instruments the treble mountain highligts the sibilance of (some instruments and singers are sibilant in real life) front and center are listenable without running a parametric equalizer. That high hat rider might as well be bashing your brains in otherwise.

If you love mids and have a decent amp, why not just get an HD 580/600/650? They scale better too.

The older pre 2003 ones are still sizzly. The 600 ohms model has a slightly less offensive high end than the others but it's still a DT 880. The 600 ohms also has worse driver matching than the pro 250 ohm ones. This is Beyerdynamic so that matters a lot more than going from cheaper Sennheisers to the handmatched HD 650 or 800.

I can tell you that when Solderdude measured my DT250-250 (see his measurements) there was a slight drive mismatch yet in stereo it sounded very pleasant indeed.

I understand that a driver mismatch is a reason to be critical. At the same time it could be worse. The MDR-V6 gave me headaches, most DT48 headphones were strangely unpleasant and the amazing Philips HP1000 and SHP9000 were too plasticky (constant creaking). The Pioneer Monitor 10 gave me a neck work-out (amazing sound though) and the HD250 II Linear always felt fragile (even compared to a PX200 II). Do not get me started on the good DT1350 I had until I finally got the driver-on-ear placement right.

A slight driver mismatch on a DT250-250 with good stereo sound, 1970-ties durability and replacement parts: still a good deal.

Are you still into DT880s?

That was a DT990/600 but I unfortunately sold it, I never should have. I actually don't like the DT880...

The old 600 Ohms models received a lot of praise. A guy I followed on HF when I was new in the hobby used to love his DT770-600.

Hi all,
I'm Lorenzo from Italy, I'm 25 and I don't listen with headphones since 2 week.
I hope to find some friends in this community that can help me with my addiction..  ;D

I'm here to get advices for some new(old?) music and for my listening setup.

Thanks to all of you pirates, because with your impressions and measurements you're helping me choosing how to waste my money  ;)

Hello all,

New to Changstar as a registered user, but long-time lurker. I've been in the hobby since its early days, so I've heard and owned quite a bit of stuff during the years. My current gear is listed in my profile.
What else to mention at this point? I'm a PhD student/researcher and software engineer by day, music critic by night, and I have a great interest in all of the arts. I hail from Croatia, a small country in the EU.

That's about it for now. ;)

Cheers!
