I tried to stick to one headphone and then I bought a back-up of it. This hobby does that to you...If I have to make a which headphone decision before listening to music, I'll listen to less music. I'm sure one is enough.

Oh... I'm about to buy another! I don't want to get rid of the first, and it wouldn't be worth enough to sell.
What to do? Are there support groups for people with problems like this? p:0

Hi my name is Rene. In the past year I've went from thinking that the schiit bifrost/asgard combo seemed like a lot of money to spend on headphones to now my (hopefully) endgame setup of EC 2a3 mkiv and krell kav-400xi for my HD800's and HE-6 respectively. My gf, of course, thinks I'm crazy.
We'll form a group of 2 (to begin with)..
My name is Jamey and I'm a recovering headphone junkie.I can't see how this place is going to help cure your addiction! :)p7

I was hoping to persuade you to get some of the TOTL HPs that I did not get.... the Abyss for starters :)

Treat your beautiful lady like a queen and you might convince her to join in your adventure into audio bliss. My previous girlfriend made me listen to French music again :)p7
French music is quite good. So is their cooking. The question is whether they can do both at the same time? :-\
Well, my previous girlfriend was Chinese and she liked to cook. So the music was good and the food was tasty and healthy. What more can you ask for?

I've heard rumours about there being something more to having a girlfriend than food music and silence.
Most of the headphones I consider neutral are considered bright by others due to my bass preferences; I could not stand the HD800's bass, for example.
Yeah, it just felt too loose and out of place in regards to the rest of the sound, like Sennheiser intentionally loosened it up to make the headphone less bright sounding or something. Most of the headphones I consider neutral are considered bright by others due to my bass preferences; I could not stand the HD800's bass, for example.
It's interesting you mention that. You are referring to the HD800's mid-high bass bloom no?
I'm known as takato14 throughout most of the internet. Most of my audio gear, past and present, is comprised of vintage flagships and/or TOTL equipment. Mostly headphones, with an amp or two thrown in there. At first it was just a bad combination of very little money and a lot of curiosity, but after a while I started getting equipment that I really enjoyed. Less relevantly, my interests are drawing, video games, needlework, and singing. I'm a furry as well as a computer enthusiast, and I'm trying to get a job as a computer repair technician.
Now, as to why I'm joining here: So far, every headphone I've bought or listened to based on the subjective opinion of others has proven to be a massive disappointment, and was quickly gotten rid of. It is also worth noting that every single one of these headphones measure badly in one way or another; most of which were were purchased when I couldn't read them (so no expectation bias there). Thus, I am very hesitant to believe subjective impressions on said equipment unless there are measurements to support the claims being made. I trust my own ears above all, and wouldn't call myself "faithful" to measurements, but what I will say is that until I'm proven wrong (ie, once I hear something that is not reflected in the measurements), I will continue to use measurements as my go-to for headphones I haven't heard myself. And as we all know, philosophies such as this are "frowned upon" in certain other audiophile communities.
On that note, I've found that I prefer a neutral sound, but a little bit of deviation from this is welcome as long as the FR remains smooth. I am very sensitive to distortion and bass issues (bloom, thickness, extension, etc). Most of the headphones I consider neutral are considered bright by others due to my bass preferences; I could not stand the HD800's bass, for example.
My current favorite/most used headphone is the Pioneer Monitor 10-II, from 1983. Not to be confused with the original Monitor 10, which is from 1972. Former favorites were the Sony DR-Z7, NAD RP18 Mylar, and Sony DR-Z6, in that order. A ranked list of the headphones I've listened to will be available in my profile momentarily.
Of course, it's very possible that I'm just a vintage geek with very specific (read: low) standards, and all of my headphones measure terribly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Either way, I'm glad to finally be here, and not there.
ahoy
Welcome ahoyThanks :)
I have read about the Pioneer Monitor 10 II. I had the Pioneer Monitor 10 and the 21st century 10R.
If the first Monitor 10 was anything to go by, well Pioneer put an amazing driver in that headphone. Pioneer's Monitor 10 had a driver that if well placed and well dampened, sounded like an open AKG with the low end of a closed headphone in the seventies.
Please take care of the Pioneer, such headphones are rare pleasure from past times...

I was relatively fine with the upper ranges though, likely because I was used to very bright headphones (SA3000, DR-Z7, DR-Z5) at the time. I'd like to give it a good, long audition again, as it has been a while and my ears have matured a bit.
The HE-6 is at the top of my "try" list right now, along with the new HE-560. I'm also interested in Sony's new closed-back, the MDR-Z7, but not until people start agreeing on how it sounds, or it gets measured. Right now we have one person saying it's bassier than the TH900 and one person saying that it can't slam like a "fun" headphone at all... talk about mixed messages :xYeah, it just felt too loose and out of place in regards to the rest of the sound, like Sennheiser intentionally loosened it up to make the headphone less bright sounding or something. Most of the headphones I consider neutral are considered bright by others due to my bass preferences; I could not stand the HD800's bass, for example.

Sounds like you could be an HE6 guy or maybe current Stax. Perhaps try the 307 out.
Welcome Tak! :)p4Ahoy, matey!
I always love hearing about your vintage collection. Maybe I'll get to hear some myself someday.
Please take care of the Pioneer, such headphones are rare pleasure from past times...Oh yeah, about that: one of my 10-IIs is NOS, and I have been taking better care of it than I do myself actually :)p13
I always love hearing about your vintage collection. Maybe I'll get to hear some myself someday. Now that you mention it, I'm kind of off my DR-Z7 right now, and I have two 10-IIs... Perhaps once I get the 10R in my hands I could see about sending them to you for an audition. I could do a shipping relay when I send them to Tyll for measurements (me -> you, you -> Tyll or similar).
Happy to do some measurements for you. Just lemme know.Yeah, I'm actually the one who contacted you about the Z6 and Z7 some few months ago -- shortly after that I discovered that one of the Z6's drivers was botched (ouch), and THEN the Z7's cable shorted out (fuck) so I had to replace it with a really trashy spare one.
More than happy to oblige. :)p6I always love hearing about your vintage collection. It's a date--thanks! Tyll gets 'em first though.
Welcome fellows.Yes, I keep going back to them and they keep putting a smile on my face everytime. They should be reissued and canibalize all AKG current offerings on sale :)p13
Xaval, glad to have (yet) another fellow K50x-er aboard.
Hey all from Portugal
Nothing really interesting on this first post so just a couple of text lines about me. In the mid forties and enjoying music for as long as I can't remember. +20 years of audio upgrades, sidegrades and downgrades, mostly with speaker stuff. The headphone bug kick in later after stabilizing with the speaker room and not much time to listen to it with neighbours all around... hence the cans. Since these days there aren't any audio stores around I've been running the upgrades, sidegrade and downgrade drill more than ever lol. Sold most of my stuff so these days I'm basically stuck with a dozen cans and a couple amps and DACs. Looking forward to exchange some experiences although I'm not an addicted to poster, so you'all should be safe ;)
Yeah, HF...
Bring it! popcorn
Hi Xaval ;)
Ex K501 & HD580 owner here... and Beresford crash tester currently :)
What I think of the CSD measurements here: I don't understand measurements at all, but I am interested in interpretations of said measurements by people who do understand them.
Hey.
I came here from Head-Fi because I got bored there. I'm waiting for Ragnarok to ship, and I'm obsessing over this hobby a bit. I do this once in a while, and it fades, and then I sell all my gear. Maybe 1-2 times a year. My plan is to maintain until Yggdrasil comes out. So, look for a Rag / Ygg for sale come next spring. :money:
I'm not even sure I like music that much. I just like the excitement of new toys (until I get them).
Maybe I need therapy.
(Don't tell Jude.)
Actually, if you want to offer that advice now, hit me! Time-honoured open HF/amp combo under $2k?
I too have novelty hillbilly teeth, a collection of Hawaiian shirts and play the uke.
Like Maxvla, I'm a fellow Oklahoman, but I'm here on the east coast for school.
Hi,
Indian, now working / living in Dubai, UAE. Was a speaker guy all my life until about 4 years back. That was when I stumbled across Head Fi while researching DJ hp’s . Beyer DT 880 was my first “audiophile HP” purchase, still have them & consider them one of the most value for money HP’s.
Initially got caught up in Head Fi Frenzy & Gear lust (which caused some problems in my marriage, plus my wife also complained that when I completely switched over to HP’s that the music in the house stopped & she missed it), went through about 25 Hp’s & 15 amps. Gear lust is slowly abating now, I have more or less settled on the HP’s & amps that I like. Have a couple of HP’s & amps that I would like to try / buy , but am in no hurry now.
Listen to my PSB Synchrony One speakers regularly on weekends & to HP’s on weekdays after work now. Fav HP’s – HD 800 & HE 6, Fav music - EDM & Rock.
Sorry for posting on a couple of threads before introducing myself, was not aware. Am here to learn & share thoughts with people who share this common passion.
Thanks.Welcome man and hello again!
Somebody in the old basshead thread at HF made a joke about multiple Hawaii's in the thread and I posted a GTFO gif (not at the hawaii dude) and got banned (1 week) Banned from the bass thread permanently....oh well.
I'm in japan but I'll be heading back to Hawaii (Oahu) in about a year for good.
Drink some Kava Kava for me! :-0 :)p4
(In the Unlikely even that I ever make an audio device, maybe I'll call it the Thad Kava, because, hopefuly, it'll be really good at revealing detail and making the music completely involving :)p2 )
((Hopefully it won't be a kava-lack-tone!))
OK, OK, enough with the kava jokes --- I tell myself :-[
Hey hawaiibadboy, welcome. I know you're not really in hawaii and neither is hawaiiancervesa, ironically I am but my nick has nothing to do with hawaiiHaha I am in Hawaii. Christian/CEE TEE and I actually met in person while he was here in Hilo.
Hi all, long time lurker on this site. I like how free speech is unabashedly practiced here. Came here to annoy the same people I annoy on HF!hello,
looking for a place where people don't justify their money with hype. are you the place?
Welcome. Very nice avatar. You from Acadiana?
Hi to everyone! ahoy
Believe it or not, but i think this the first forum where i started a topic! ;D So lurker to writer is my mission.

Do you like Finnish wood tar flavored candy?

Can you get me a Karelian Bear dog for review?Hi Anaxilus,
Hi Kunlun,
1) Yes i listen classical music also and i like Sibelius, but i have only heard the common ones like "Finlandia" and "The Swan of Tuonela"
2) He-heh! :P I have to say yes, because i have box of those in side of my computer right now!
3) Well, he usually is the one who is avoiding the hard work...No, seriously speaking the Fire Officers Training programme give you skills to work in many jobs in Rescue services, Fire Chief is one job of many possibilities.
But tell me Kunlun, how do you know about that kind of stuff in Finland? Where do you live?
Hello all.
I've been prowling for a bit and thought I should finally introduce myself. I was thrown initially by Ver. 1.0 of this thread as it's locked down. In any event, I'm Schopenhauer. It's a pleasure to make y'all's acquaintance.
Best,

Hello TheArcticPenguin.
I like your username.
the end-game that never comes because the goal post just moves down the road and that road has no end.
The real problem is there are infinite overtimes, and sometimes it feels like things advance by a series of fouls leading to only a single free throw at a time (or continually missed field goals if you want to take an american football perspective).

Thanks :)

Hello people!
I recently fell back into listening on ‘phones again. I'm a video editor, and I started working freelance this year. I found myself on a lot systems where I had to cut with headphones so I picked up a pair of MDR-7506’s and a Leckerton UHA 6S MKII - that’s my portable work rig. Now I’ve really embraced editing with headphones!
Anyway, I also started listening to music at home on headphones too, so I’m starting to research what’s out there, for a non-work set-up to enjoy at home... Looking forward to learning about the headphone world!
Hey - this is Randy from Santa Clara, CA! I'm in health care (physical therapist) and know next to nothing about Hifi - moreso just happen to like what I like - I've gone t hrough TONS of equipment but have narrowed it down to my HD800s (soon I'd love to mod them using the anax mod folks talk about on here) & my trusty Cavalli EHHA Rev. A which I had rebuilt by Corey at SWA. (Portable audio I'm using a Leckerton UHA 6s w/op amp 209 and a UERM). I'm just here to learn about new (and old) equipment, learn about audio and frequencies, and would love to sample more cool stuff! I've attended one of the head-fi meets in 2014 near the SF airport and am definitely looking forward to attending and bringing my stuff (if folks are interested) to other meets.
Hey - this is Randy from Santa Clara, CA! ............
Don't forget I know where you live broski! :-)
I always preferred Dana Scully... but welcome anyway! :)p6
I believe Dana's internet name was nwavguy...I want to believe that.
In case of doubt, lend your ears the experience of the Koss KSC75.
That little headphone is just awesome :)p8
Ha, perhaps so. I think it is like I just last week learned how to operate the gas and brake pedal of a go-kart and then yesterday went out and bought the top of the line Ferrari, Lambo and PAgani and am trying to figure out which one of these three to keep.
OK so I want to ask, what the hell purpose do expensive headphone cables serve?
Are we supposed to believe that Sennheiser or Beyer or whoever is going to offer a $1000-$2000 headphone with state of the art transducers but use CRAP for their cables?
Or how is one supposed to believe that a special cable, even if it is supposedly made of superior material, delivers the signal better, once it reaches the connector on the headphne, it's no longer using that specific material. Right? And the connector on the headphone then is wired to reach the transducer, yet that wire is made by the original manufacturer and not the aftermarket company, so again, how is this signal now jumping over that bridge between the connector and the transducer???? Or the amp's output jack, that's not made by the aftermarket cable company, so.... I don't get it.
How does one justify spending $500 for a cable using 16 or 32 conductors tied by an Eagle Scout with special acoustic knots??
This topic always get's dangerously close to subjectivist/objectivist BS, but here's my take: I think there are potentially a number of reasons to change cables, sound being only one. You may need different connectors, a different length, or the stock cable construction may be cr@p (such as with my HE-6 :( ). Or, you may just want to look like a balla at your next meet - people certainly do buy them for aesthetic reasons. Or, you may not like a certain material in the cable and prefer how something else sounds - the SPC stock cable of the HD800 comes to mind - not a fan of it personally. I guess what I'm getting at is that someone may have relatively pragmatic reason to purchase a cable. I agree with your assertion that they're probably among the lowest items on the proverbial totem pole that impact sound, but I do hear subtle differences. Your mileage may vary.
Or how is one supposed to believe that a special cable, even if it is supposedly made of superior material, delivers the signal better, once it reaches the connector on the headphne, it's no longer using that specific material. Totally wrong thread and wholly off topic. However, I dislike this argument enough to respond to it so here goes. If you drive the same way to work each day at the same time, but one day there's an accident that has to be cleared causing one lane to be blocked off and traffic to merge, do you get to work at the same time as the other days?
I also really hope your statement is not indicative that you believe actual 1's and 0's flow along analog cables in digital sources.
But by all means welcome and feel free to use the search button or start a thread to continue the dialogue.
Make another thread, this is way off topic for here... :& :boom:Sorry! I will search and read more and start a new thread.
I generally lurk and rarely post but I've been reading the forums for a while now so I might as well get that first post in. ahoy
Some fun facts about me:
- I have a formal musical education (20+ years piano) with some university options (my degree is comp sci)
- I once conducted a full orchestra for 10 minutes (Brahms 2nd symphony excerpt) as part of a university exam - yes it was AWESOME
- I own a large latin LP collection and DJ for local and international salsa dance events
I really appreciate all the info that is here! It's been instrumental in helping me to decide what I want to try/buy since auditioning stuff is very difficult.
Your exam, the pure concept of it is
I look forward to your music posts. I recently dived in to Spanish and Latin music. Los Van Van and Jarabe de Palo have been steady favourites. Often times I find Latin instrumentals just as rewarding as Funk and Metal.

Hello, as i can see the force is quite high here.
Just bs'ing. Actaully haven't been very much into headphones, maybe 3 years max.
First good impression was with the K701, some 6 years ago. So i thought, headphones can be quite good.
My main deal was speakers and tying to get the acoustics right. We have used Genelec 8050A monitors and have done a punch of experiments and measurements with them.
(Also tested the smaller 8040A for half a year.)
My main 'rig' atm is Zero Audio 'Tenore' and a .rockboxed Clip + :)
How are the Genelecs? Heard good things about them, but the price seems a bit steep.I suppose they are quite good. I dont have good speaker references but I have had a change to compare them to HD800 from HDVA600 with BMC Pure DAC , speakers from the same DAC. Also, first time we used Daphile sound as the source. The speakers sounded surprisingly good in that small room. Lots of early reflection.. The HD800s came a head with lots of detail, but the speaker bass and overall dynamics was still breathtakingly good. We need to retest the system in a better room ofc.. In this comparison i would say that the HD800 are like a microscope, the macro detail is also better presented. But the speakers still are very enjoyable and capable to my surprise.
Hello everyone...

Hello everyone.
A good fellow of mine introduced me to the site.

Also, whoa whoa slow down..."exit rig"? You mean, people can stop running on the upgrade hamster wheel and enjoy listening to the setup they've built? :-DD I roll to disbelieve.
Hi Gaurav :) That meet at your place years ago is still one of my fav meets, good times.
Welcome aboard dude!
Indeed - lots of us fondly remember the meets you hosted at your place. :)p6
I wonder if "BJ" is on this forum!

Welcome! Are those AMT tweeters at the very top of those outside stacks?
Holy crap. You still have netcom.com account?
Yes! Remember Netcom? They were one of the first ISPs in the Bay Area and my Netcom account dates from 1993! It's managed by Earthlink now.
Also, your wallet will suffer regardless when you have folks talking about the Rag/Yggy or other expensive gear. But at least there's less crap to get through, and you'll more likely have better spent your money the first or second time vs. one hundred times.
Yeah but those folks are talking about their endgame rigs after many years of figuring out what they want. I don't think anyone here would dismiss something like the entry-level magni/modi schiit stack as being inadequate.
Magni / Modi stack, unless they are Uber, is inadequate.
Anyway, I'm smitty, I'm from NoVA, and I can never have too much gear. I listen to music for a minimum of 14 hours a day, so variety is what keeps stuff interesting.Welcome Smitty! ahoy
Hi all. Liked the objective/subjective synthesis and banter so much I thought I'd join. This forum has a wealth of information and a no BS approach. Awesome.
Hi everyone,
I'm basically one of those extremely uninformed HF users who started to recognise the names of respected individuals from multiple websites and somehow found my way here. Lurking here filled out a lot of gaps and got me to start making some sense of the hi-fi hobby.
I own a T1 as a gift and have since been trying to figure out how to make them sound the way strangers in the internet say they should.
Didn't think I'd post any time soon but the anime mp3 comment by marvey was low as fuck. Even we anime-watchers have the standards to look for high-quality source files >:(
Welcome and please do not feel offended. Jokes and mockery are part of live.
If you seriously disagree with Marvey though, simply "Tank" him with some Cowboy Bebop music? I hope you get the hint ahoy
P.S. The Cowboy Bebop soundtrack is high on my musical wishlist.
Ahoy there (is that the culturally appropriate greeting on this forum?)
I am a 40 year old Australian who loves music - Love playing, love listening, love talking etc... from medieval to Metallica and most things in between.
Since having my first child seven years ago I gravitated to headphones as a more "family friendly" means of enjoying my recordings. Stumbled across this site in getting info about K7XX.
Looking forward to learning from research and experience in buying the best gear I can afford.
Cheers
Nathan
Hi KothBingo. And a couple of chokes as well. Its working out great, mate. That's my go to amp for the Sennheiser HPs. That's right - They were some Clarity Cap SAs for the power supply, weren't they? How did they work out for you? I have used them in the past with great results.

I auditioned the HD800s on my Concerto a few years ago and wasn't impressed.
This forum should change its name into "The Lurker's Corner" or something similar!
Get an eye patch to increase your lurking skills. Practise your uncovered eye to always look sleepy and become an expert eye patched sleepy eyed lurker extra-ordinair.
Nota bene: this skill is best used among pirates and in harbours, on land and in civilisation lurking is not always appreciated.

Hi there!
Your upgrade path looks very similar to others I know. Welcome aboard!
While the k10 isn't exactly new, there seems to be a hype train for it right now which is scaring me off.
Like for CIEMs, I'm mostly looking at the UERMs and Noble K10s. The UERMs represent the safe, solid choice that's been around awhile and has a lot of sound impressions to back it up. While the k10 isn't exactly new, there seems to be a hype train for it right now which is scaring me off.Read my review for the k10 on HF and you'll get a solid sense of the sound. The UERM and K10 are quite different, so if you're deciding between those two, then you haven't thought through what it is you really want, yet. There should be a Noble thread around here, you're welcome to post there or pm me.
Also, if you want UERMs, Massdrop just did a UERM special not too long ago. I'm sure they will bring it back.Oh, and wait until Anax's special report on his UERM...

Read the various comments about the measurements here and you come to understand a number of things.
1. Measurements and subjective listening impressions can complement each other.
2. Measurements can show things your ears do not pick up.
3. In the end your own enjoyment determines whether you want to continue listening with specific headphones and speakers.
Mind you I am not as technical as Ultrabike, Solderdude and Marvey. I have learnt many things from their comments and explanations though...
Yo, just came over from Head-Fi so I could lurk.

Hello pyrates,
I come in peace from HF and am enjoying the no-BS philosophy of this community more. The few hours I've spent lurking here have taught me more than months reading HF. In a nutshell, I am obsessed with planars, a huge Tyll fanboy, and a Schiithead. And like many of you, I am searching for my audio holy grail.
I've come to know Marv through his extensive DAC thread on HF, to which I forwarded to my audiophile friend. Said friend had the pleasure in meeting Marv at CanJam and confirms that Marv is a totally legit and we have both since embraced the pyrate lifestyle.
Really looking forward to knowing this community.
Fuck. Shit. Hell yeah, my favorite words aren't censored on a messageboard for once. :spank:
For a youngin' I broke/modded too many phones. All my phones except three sub $20 iems.
AD900x (one channel working, played with damping and housing).
He-400 (headband foam removal/dissection, driver held on by only screws and no retaining ring for bass boost/less painful peaky treble and more "open" sound, still not exactly sure on definition. Stax sr-5 pads. waiting for cable repair shipment).
HD419 (earpad removal and damping paper removal. Driver cage removal. Accident with that resulted with a boxknife cutting into my palm. ER).
Stax sr-5 (one channel b/c one torn diapragm from higher volumes and age and mods with damping which may have caused over excursion).
Amperior (one channel working, need to solder hair thin driver wire after playing around with baffle to in mods to tone down siblance and thus slight midrange recession).
Dt770 (working. My messy soldering in internal wires after modding. Learned it has channel imbalance, unfixable, b/c one diaphragm is slightly thicker than the other).
I have an o2/odac. . . and an o2 I messed up.
Whew. . . urg. Just six months into the hobby. Went to Canjam socal 2015. Didn't spend enough time there.
Being constantly on the move kind sucks. I just dig portable stuff. Minimal cable count is a must.
I don't want to be an attention whore, but it seems that only core members get good answers on this forum. Doesn't matter. Still a lot to read and learn.
iPhone + Oppo PM-3 should do it. You're welcome.
Go in the all purpose advice thread and ask away. You may be surprised.
Have done that this afternoon. Still waiting to see if any answers will kick in?
BTW I just forgot to multi quote. Sorry for posting so frequently.
Hopefully you have access to the "pirate booty" thread.
If you have to have something that is affordable and sounds good for portable use a.s.a.p. go for Koss. Portapro, KSC35, KSC75 and SportaPro impressions are a post away.
Solderdude is known to scout affordable headphones and modify them. Check out his work and that of Stratocaster in particular.
For portable gear I prefer DJ-gear hence I have K181 DJ. Some people here prefer in-ears in all kinds of "customisations." This place is not the swamp HF is.

Despite appearances, we are not hostile to HF. It may seem that way because we let people blow off steam - we moderate with a lighter touch and prefer to steer conversations rather than censor them. People seem to forget that we Pyrates solely planned Head-Fi meets in California from 2011 to 2014 - laying the groundwork for the current HF meets/tradeshows in CA. HF's not an easy place to sharply critique gear. Sometimes it seems some people just don't want to know or take it personally. I totally understand and respect that - that's one reason this site was created. Over here, there are a lot of different opinions, some diametrically different, but we all manage to get along. It's all laid out there for readers to decide among themselves.
We can be extremely immature here though. I'm sure you may have noticed. Changstar motto is: We take audio seriously, but we don't take ourselves seriously.
Actually I did not learn until two days ago that all the previous Cali meets were organized by you and the guys here, it's not advertised to noobs. That really puts things into perspective.
Like you purrin hate K3003 but sparrow loves it.
Here, what normal people think sounds okay, we tend to think sounds shit. Above average gear is mediocre. The reference bar here is usually ridiculous high (usually end game worthy as in there is nothing left out there worthy).
But, the headphone business is not like the 2003 F1 under Ferrari2002/2003GA+Schumacher. There is no fixed combination, and there is no absolute champion car/driver. People are free to call their favourite. Their personal best. But when one takes into consideration that there are things to be measured, and there are some issues that a majority of experienced enthusiasts agreed upon, there comes the high standards (at least that's what I understand here).
Do not forget Kimi Räikkönnen.
Agreed on Mika Häkkinen. When talking with my friends about F1 we were so fed up with "Schumacher this" and "Schumacher that".
Records are cool. Good stories are cooler and Kimi and Mika had more stories.

How were you endowed your fat bass? Did pirate booty "booty up" your lower hertz regions?
Welcome recarcar! I hope you enjoyed the meet :)Thanks! It was a lot of fun. Your setup was awesome. Listening to some Arvo Pärt with the Code-X and Abyss off it was incredible :)p1
Looking for advice on buying a DAC for the rest of my days. Tired of hearing the usual marketing hype talk.

How much money do you got? What do you currently use? What else do you like? Need context.I like live music recordings. Jazz, Classical, Rock.
I have a BIG question with regards to the Yggy.
What's the deal with the "3 weeks warm-up" time.
You guys probably have a lot more experience with this machine. How long does it really take?
Those guys on HF seem to be all over the place, because nobody knows what to expect …
:)p13
Maybe I'm in the wrong thread -
My name's Kevin and I'm a Changstar newbie.
I'm here now because I was treated poorly over on Head-Fi when I asked to help organize a Denver meet last month.
I've quickly realized Head-Fi is for selling / buying, advertising, etc. but not for sharing / learning with the headphone community.
It's all about the cash over there and not the community...
That's why I made the switch.
Hello Pirates!
:)p6
Glad to see you here Lachlan
Welcome Lachlan.Ahh, brings back memories. One day I will work out if it was all worth it but no regrets so far.
Big up for speaking your mind (about some things), such as http://www.head-fi.org/t/724799/opinion-review-units-hurt-the-audio-community (http://www.head-fi.org/t/724799/opinion-review-units-hurt-the-audio-community). :)p3

Nonsense. I actually prefer dogs, but after having dogs for twenty five years, I realized it was such a pain to go on vacations. I'll take a larger breed cat over a Chihuahua though.
Cockatiels here. What's a pirate without some sort of parrot on the shoulder? :)p2
Definitely a bird/dog/fish person. :)p7
I have a question though, what are brownie points. I like brownies so I guess I like them as well :p
I couldn't find anything about it anywhere at this website :-Z
Some people call them the force. Some people call them the schwarz.
jjacq, Your home set-up is similar to mine. I have an Emotiva XDA-1 feeding a TTVJ Fet-A or a Headroom Max. While I have not heard the Mjolnir, I have a Cavalli Carbon on the way. I'll pick whichever two amps best suit me.
My current setup is: foobar (wasapi) - ODAC - Meier Corda Aria - HD 600
I can’t really afford more expensive gear so this will stay for the foreseeable future.

Koss KSC75
The best pair of headphones I've ever had or listened to! Really! I've read all the posts about them, but was sceptic, especially looking at their price. Deep Funk mentioned many times that he listens to music on them mostly, and that he sold many more expencive headphones because of them. It wasn't clear to me why, until he sent me a pair. WOW! Everything sounds right, from the bottom to the top, and the drums are realistic and punchy(!) which was very important to me. Had a chance to listen to audio technica ath-m50, and from what I heard, I like drums more on KSC75. Love them and use them for music production/mixing, listening to music, watching movies, everything! The only two things I wish were better are: 1. higher resolution. They are detailed, but I wish they were just a bit more. 2. deeper low end. low end is nice and deep, but i would like if it was just a bit deeper, so you can hear 30hz just like 80hz for exapmle. So, if you know any model that has identical freq response, but it's more detailed and has a deeper low end PLEASE recommend! They are kind of soft too, which is good for listening to music, but I have problem with them hearing distortion when I'm mixing, so I check that with my other headphones. Anyway, overall, they are great! Especially for that price!
(am French of Indian origin)! =)
merci merci Deep Funk et Sorrodje!

Your website looks good. Did you do all of that yourself?
P.S. When I saw "bokeh" and "iPhone" and "how to" I had to pinch myself. I have to read that how to.

I have to say your work for Noble is stunning.

Hi! Belated (sorry) intro here, I've been lurking for a while. I spend a huge amount of time listening to headphones, but have not been very diligent about listening to much different gear. Hence the lurking. I came here because of the DAC thread on head-fi, as it seemed that the signal to noise ratio was a lot higher here. Head-fi put me onto the Benchmark DAC 1 USB back in 2004, which at the time was way better than what I had. I don't even remember what it was, but it's treble was absolutely heinous. A while ago I heard a Bryston BDA-1 and concluded that the Benchmark had to go, but I had no clue where the Bryston stood in the field, only that it was way more expensive in the UK than in North America. Then I got busy, and then started thinking about waiting for multi-bit to trickle down from Yggy... More pressing, I need to put together a smallish desktop rig with closed phones as I'm moving to an open office desk soon.
I was pretty saddened when I hit the box asking me to list my gear. My modern gear is currently just a pair of ATH-AD700.
Don't. 90% of the people on HF who have long long lists of gear are in mid-fi purgatoryThanks! No purgatory for me! As pirates, we go straight to hell. :)p7
I was pretty saddened when I hit the box asking me to list my gear.
Welcome, welcome, and welcome.I'm kinda stuck in mid-fi+ purgatory. I have a crapload of different headphones and earphones. The best I have are the Sennheiser HD650 (open), Fostex TH600 (semi-closed), Noble 5 (IEM), and Sennheiser G4me Zero (closed gaming). But I have about half a dozen other decent headphones that I could've just not purchased and would have been able to save for something closer to the summit.

I do most of my listening with one headphone: the HD650. The rest is a bunch of crap that I took measurements on and need to ship to other people or put on the Changstar loaner program.

If someone's replacing units that have worn out (or become obsolete), over many years of use (because he does a LOT of listening and he's old), is it really a good thing if your regular Joe has a long list of gear, either currently or previously owned? To me, it just suggests that someone's got more money than sense (or certainly much more money than I have!).Very true words. I like to buy things that I think will give me good value over a long period of time, like well made audio gear.

Blizzard Entertainment? You wouldn't be located here in Irvine would you?
As far as mid-fi+ purgatory, sell what you don't need. I don't tend to buy lots of stuff, but I had a couple of mid-fi gear > $100 which was sold. KSC-75s I do have more than 2. One broke on me since they tend to take a little abuse sometimes.
Yep, I'm in Laguna Hills right at the Irvine border. Are there a fair number of OC folks around here?
I don't even remember what it was, but it's treble was absolutely heinous.
I believe there is talk of a Christmas party up in the Bay Area during the last week of the year. That may be a good time for us to get our costumes out.
Just saw that I should post here as a new(ish) member, so here I am. I seem to have only acquired one pair of phones that I would consider unnecessary, though I still think they're pretty good sounding (DT 1350). All the others I've purchased since I got back into "audio" a little over a year ago have their place and purpose. The DT 1350s were also my first buy and were what got me started in this game.
Welcome Applehead, I remember you from the HF W3000ANV thread a while back. You and Romy always had good contributions there. I recently sold my ANV's not that long ago. What a unique sounding and beautiful headphone it was. Anyway, I hope you enjoy your time spent here and best of luck. BTW, you have great tastes in music, cheers! :)p5
Cheers!

Dogs Rule!
Welcome to all the new pirates!
I've got a dog and two kittens so I agree with the cat and dog lovers.
Sellout!
Fine, if I had to pick... puppy vs kitten? I pick the one who doesn't try to eat his or her own poop (kitten). Owning both at the same time has made me swing from being more of a dog lover to more of a cat lover.
We'll see where I land when the dog is old and lazy.
Sellout!
P.S. To get a reaction out of people a tarantula also makes a good pet.
When You cannot decide go for a rabbit and call it Mike :)p8

I've always wanted to eat a roasted one. They look like crab meat inside. Couldn't be worse than the cricket sushi I ate in Cambodia. Insects should be served well-done, not rare or blue.
You really live up to your avatar Anaxilus.
AppleheadMay, a lion is cool but a semi-domesticated wild cat would be my choice. Lions can kill with one swipe of their claws alone and you still need to give the cat enough space to wonder in. Otherwise a wolf is a better choice and you can raise a wolf.
Ain’t nobody got time for that.
We'll see where YOU land when you're old and lazy. ;)

Hey! Been an occasional lurker on here, finally decided to join up. Been in the hobby for about seven years now with a bit of ebb and flow. Mainly listen to speakers with some occasional dabbling in headphones. Current main system is a Fet Audio DAC, DCB1 preamp and Presonus studio monitors. Headphone setup has a Matrix M Stage, multiple headphones and a Behringer SRC2496.
Previous iteration of the main setup was heavily on the tube side. Lampizator DAC, Rethm Gaanam amplifier and Rethm Saadhana speakers. Decided to downsize last year (the ebb part of the ebb and flow I mentioned above).
Welcome. You should Lampi your SRC2496 :-)Thought about it a few times but the SRC2496 is like a digital audio swiss army knife. Works as a DAC, an ADC, an SRC/reclocker and as a headphone amp. Have used all those functions except the ADC at various points in time. Its the longest surviving audio component I own!
Welcome Jai! Good to see more fellow Indians here. :)Thanks gurubhai. I still have the two headphones I bought from you in 2011

No, we prefer not to delete stuff if it can be helped. There might be rigorous discourse however that requires the application of literacy, validity and cogency. People usually get into trouble once they demonstrate an obvious lack of 2 out of 3.
I like it! :)p6Just make sure it's not on your own sword.

A European liberal atheist who only listens to country music but dislikes guns and trucks.
Given country music's finite subject matter, I guess that pretty much leaves songs about small towns, trailer parks, farm equipment, fishing, being an unwed teenage mother, ill-fitting blue jeans, moonshine, lip gloss, the sun setting and/or rising, Nashville, divorce, cowboy boots, and sagebrush.

I'm more inclined to think that laws are/should be forced on us, not for our own good, but for the good of others.
As for being a leftie, I don't think I have ever heard a better model than from each according to their ability, to each according to their need. Maybe that makes me a Marxist, but I am yet to read the book and find out. It's an ideal, and whether any system that calls itself socialist/communist/etc has ever actually implemented it, I doubt.
Hey! What's up y'all?
nmatheis (same over in headfi-land) reporting for duty ahoy
I'm sure some of you know me. For those who don't, I've been into portable audio since I got my first Sony Walkman with crappy treble-happy over-the-head earbuds. Oh man, did I do some damage back then. Metal and crappy table-happy earbuds should be outlawed!!!
I moved on to portable cd players, then minidisc (woot, woot for md, yo!!!), and on to old-skool DAPs (Rio Karma, several iRiver), and now my iPhone and Fiio and iBasso DAPs.
My HP / IEM collection has grown over time from Sony, Sony, Sony to a diverse and ever-growing budget and mid-fi collection.
I think I listed pretty much everything I own or can remember trying in my profile. Take a look if you're interested.
I listen to a lot of electronic (mostly more abstract / experimental stuff) and metal (mostly old-skool, black, and doom). I also dig classic rock, jazz, and modern composition.
Hopefully that's enough to get things rollin' headbang

Hi guys,
I guess my name kind of explains who I am. I'm not here to cause trouble or promote HFN, I'm mostly here because the word "Head-fi" gives me shivers ::)
I'm hoping this is a more open minded community :)
Hey Lieven,
Good to see you. Viva la revolución!
Joined in January but haven't been frequenting the forum until now (for no good reason except hours available in the day)
I'm a DAC manufacturer & I see some of my dacs & converters are mentioned & used by members here - known by the names of JKDAC, JKSPDIF & the later models known by the name of CIUNAS
I'm very interested in the correlation between measurements & auditory perception but from the perspective of understanding what are the factors that go into making the illusion of stereo audio more realistic. I see there is a whole section on amp & DAC measuring on this forum & hope to learn something & maybe contribute a little.
I'm not here to promote my goods but happy to answer any questions I can in relation to them.
Welcome John! Good to see you. Thanks Austin, glad to see you enjoying the Ciunas converter :)
Lieven, the Belgian dude who was at the Dutch meet years ago that Paaj held? I was there with Proglover.
Thanks for the welcome everyone! Yes I was there but couldn't stay long as my sister just gave birth to my god child :)
Are you still into DT880s?
I still remember the wacky variety of that meet. There was even a DT48 owner, I think Drosera who could crack some jokes.
Why is it us DT880 lovers always get beat up?
I do not get it. I used to read mostly positive things about the DT880. There was also the Darth Beyer DT880 which was widely loved by fans comparable to the AKG Sextett fans. A good Sextett is lovely with well produced music.
The DT880-250 was once on my short list until the AKG K240DF crossed my path. If you can recommend the DT880-250 to a midrange lover on a lower volume, I might consider it over the DT250-250.

Unless you're Mr. Clean hair will get on the driver, the bass will rattle, you'll have to perform surgery to remove it, and eventually will fuck up and kill the headphone after some years. Only recordings of genres that don't have the instruments the treble mountain highligts the sibilance of (some instruments and singers are sibilant in real life) front and center are listenable without running a parametric equalizer. That high hat rider might as well be bashing your brains in otherwise.
The DT880-250 was once on my short list until the AKG K240DF crossed my path. If you can recommend the DT880-250 to a midrange lover on a lower volume, I might consider it over the DT250-250.
What about the old 600 Ohms models? The older pre 2003 ones are still sizzly. The 600 ohms model has a slightly less offensive high end than the others but it's still a DT 880. The 600 ohms also has worse driver matching than the pro 250 ohm ones. This is Beyerdynamic so that matters a lot more than going from cheaper Sennheisers to the handmatched HD 650 or 800.
I am going to accept Budget-Fi and Mid-Fi anyway. I am already a disciple of the KSC-75 order.
Are you still into DT880s?
That was a DT990/600 but I unfortunately sold it, I never should have. I actually don't like the DT880...
Hello all,
New to Changstar as a registered user, but long-time lurker. I've been in the hobby since its early days, so I've heard and owned quite a bit of stuff during the years. My current gear is listed in my profile.
What else to mention at this point? I'm a PhD student/researcher and software engineer by day, music critic by night, and I have a great interest in all of the arts. I hail from Croatia, a small country in the EU.
That's about it for now. ;)
Cheers!
Dobar dan!
Hi guys,
I guess my name kind of explains who I am. I'm not here to cause trouble or promote HFN, I'm mostly here because the word "Head-fi" gives me shivers ::)
I'm hoping this is a more open minded community :)
I vote loin cloth and painted nipple attire for this weekend, Tyll.
:wheel: Welcome to Changstar! Looks the ship just picked up another French pyrate.Well I actually DO speak English, so I'm not THAT French :)
Hello Mr Butchi :) . Welcome! :)p7
If you pronounced that bootchi it would be insect in the local language where I live.
kothganesh can correct my spelling/pronunciation, as he actually speaks it, rather than just knowing the words for some of the creatures in the garden, which is all I can manage.
Hi guys,
Long time Head-Fi member, and only knew about this site as some mysterious place that no one over there wanted to talk about. I then discovered this site recently from Tyll's HD800 mod article.
I got into headphones seriously in 1994, and then after a few years of fun and exploration, I kind of settled down with a system that was good enough, but recently because of Schiit, I've been interested again. My list of equipment in roughly chronological order (that I still have):
- Headroom Supreme (that I learned about in Stereophile), Ety 4S, and HD580
- Sennheiser HE60 and HEV70
- AKG K1000 + SAC amp
- Senn HD600
- Senn HD650
- 2nd gen Headroom Max
(long break)
- Schiit Asgard
- Apple dual-driver IEMs + Ety flanges (for airplanes)
- Centrance DACport LX
- Centrance HiFi-M8
- new-to-me HD800 on its way
- Bottlehead Crack + Speedball kit on its way
Plus various DACs moving in and out from the main system (eg. Theta Pro Prime IIA, modded Parts Connection DAC2, Rotel CD player). Main system BTW is based on a pair of gen 1 Linkwitz Orions, with Plutos as surrounds, and a Lexicon MC-12HD and Logitech streamer. It's far from a purist audio system, but I enjoy the heck out of it, and it's very difficult to find a better speaker than the Orions at any price besides its successors.
Most of my music is from my large CD collection that I've been ripping piecemeal. My main interest is classical music, and I try to listen to as much of it live as possible. I'm lucky to live within driving distance of the LA Phil, and the amazing Disney Concert Hall, and had been a subscriber for over 10 years, before Dudamel took over. Talented guy, but I'm not a fan.
I would say I'm an objectivist and have been trained that way as an engineer, but I know enough to know that there's lots of weird stuff that happens, so I try to be skeptical of both objectivist and subjectivist claims, with skepticism rising proportionally to the extremism of either side.
Glad to be here, and it's fascinating reading past threads.
Hey guys! ahoy
A friend got me into the hobby and also heard about this site from him.
Welcome aboard!
Who's your friend? I'd like to pre-judge you based on whether I find this person acceptable. :P
...that would be me :)p3Ohhhhh, I suppose Whimsical gets a pass, then. :)p13
Hi all, lurker's first post here.
Same username on headfi by the way, not very active poster as well.
Basically I'm just an anime lover who happens to care about playback quality. So yep, pretty likely my home rig is being used more for anime than music :P
Erm, enjoyment aside, headphones do indeed somewhat matters for watching raws. For example, with TH600 I had to go over my comfortable volume zone to catch the words from time to time orz
As for music, I mostly listen to doujin, anisong, and game ost, or so called '2d' related stuffs :)p17
Currently using PC>BDA2>430HA>HD800 at home, and ZX2>UERM outside.

Welcome!ARIA fan here :D
Not a big fan of using the hd800s for doujin music, but the UERM works fairly well! My hd650 setup and speaker setup work very well for just about everything though :)
Thanks all!
ARIA fan here :D
Personally hd800 works nice for my usages, probably partly due to that I don't listen loud.
Haven't listened to the hd650 and hd600 for very long, and never tried them on proper decent setup to be frank. IIRC old impressions were that I'd take hd598 over them on modest setup, for the better comfort and slightly more 'exciting' or less mid-centric sound..
You should definitely try out the hd650s again with your current setup. They open up a lot with a high end setup, especially when you perform some simple mods on them. I only have a modest Valhalla 2 but the hd650 sounds damn good out of the valhalla 2 and the Yggy.

And Aria is amazing! It's my favorite anime :P
Yea thats something I might consider even just for the sake of trying.. Currently another idea of similar cost is to get some Stax Lambdas, since I have a Kgsshv lying around unused orz
Not getting anything soon though, as I just ordered an Eizo EV2750 few days ago, gotta limit a bit..
It really depends on what you like/dislike about the he-560, and what you're looking for with the senns. It also depends on what your current gear is as well. IME, amps that work well with the he-560 (speaker amps) won't work well with the senns (OTL tube amps). Of course there are high end amps that handle both types well.
HD800 for listening to non-anime/doujin music. TBH, it's kind of a waste to get the hd800s if you mostly listen to that stuff like I do. That's why I sold my pair a while ago. Now if I had a nice EC amp to go with my yggy, that might be a different story xD.
HD650 is great for just about everything, when paired with a revealing amp and dac. Smooth throughout the whole FR, and a touch of extra bass for some fun factor. But at the same time, they are very resolving for when you want to listen to well recorded music.
After spending some time with the he-560s, modded and unmodded, I just couldn't take the treble with most of the music that I listened to.
I like your avatar! -Just hope Honoka does not want to meet Kyubey and get asked this:

Just say "NO"
Puella Magi? Does that mean "magical girl" or something similar? When that includes anime magic expect everything that is possible.
Yes it means Magical Girl. Basically Kyubey (My avatar) makes a contract with a girl, makes them a Puella Magi and then steals their souls. Kyybey is cute, but will steal your soul.
Welcome everyone. Um... I know I'm not on here very often but was there word of a new site coming up for changestar? Did everyone go there?superbestaudiofriends.org
