Zerodeefex Shills The Geek Wave
« on: June 02, 2014, 10:52:10 PM »

To those that heard the Geek Wave, did you ask about any of the upgrades? I personally am a bit skeptical of the X and XD versions with the dual-mono/balanced and femto jazz... but who knows. I'm contemplating pledging for the player but their past shenanigans have me second guessing myself constantly.

Skeptical in what way?

Not in terms of the technical gains of these modifications but more about if LH is able to properly implement the gear. Nowadays, especially in the "high-end" DAP world specs like Dual-DAC chips, Balanced out, Upgraded clocks, etc. are just buzz words. Plus, without impressions/reviews or better yet the opportunity to hear the Pulse with the Femto/Analog upgrades... I can't bring myself to throw my money into the pit that is Kickstarter again.

This is me being somewhat sour about how LH has handled the logistics, etc. of the Out and the Pulse. I still have yet to receive my Geek Out, even though I was an early adopter and bought the "Geek Out + Pulse Combo" which was marketed as the first to receive their units when available.. well that was total BS.

So if I were to pledge for the Wave, I'm having a hard time spending more than the $149 for the 32 Version.. much less the X or XD at $529 or $899.

go for the $150 version and get individual updates if you're interested. They'll do femto only for $150 and Larry hinted they'll do a dual DAC version as well for an additional charge.

I think the $148 32GB version + a $120 256GB SDXC card + no other options is the best deal of the bunch, though.

I wouldn't worry about tech implementation.  Fang, AK, and ALO have nothing on these guys tech wise.

The logistics were just growing pains.  They're increasing their manpower all the time and shuffling the right people to the right job.  I just met some new folk they hired over the weekend including a new sales director, so they are investing the resources into customer service and not running away with the money.  The way I see it you either hate the experience and hate LH so should just get your money back and be done with it, or go in based on the tech itself.  You seem caught halfway atm, so you'll have to figure that one out.  I can guarantee it's not going to be vaporware, but I can't guarantee they'll meet every deadline on point.  I can understand in boutique audio when things happen beyond your control, this is why it's not a good idea to overpromise which is why Jason no longer announces product development openly.  Hell, getting a proper transformer made for the Levi these days is like building the panama canal.

I'll admit to getting the $150 32gb Geek Wave after hearing it on Saturday. I thought it sounded good, and it was a good deal. Naturally, I have also heard of the issues regarding Geek Out people still not getting their product on time. I know they're shooting for March 2015 release of the Wave, but I'm not holding that as a hard and firm date. So we'll see what happens. I did post on one of the LH Labs boards in thanking Gavin for letting us listen to the Wave. He did respond with this a post ending with: "The CHANGSTAR crew was very helpful in finding areas that could be improved. :)" He's well aware of this site, though a few of you knew of this already. I like the tech and what they're trying to do. But sometimes growing pains do tweak at least a few people.

As you know if you were following the shoutbox on Saturday evening, I ended up buying a set of the Aedle VK-1 after listening to them for a half hour with iPad and Herus in the Tweak Studio space (the Boardroom off the lobby of the Atrium).

I remember reading about the Aedle even before it hit headfi and I was nearly intrigued enough to get in on the early buy. Kinda regret that I didn't, but *shrug* new audio companies are kind of a coin toss.

I just grabbed the Geek Wave because of you fucks. I remember looking for a cheap audio player months backs, though I dislike the prospect of carrying a second device alongside a phone. On the other hand, if this pans out, I can budget a smartphone without an SD slot, cause fucking Google hating expanded storage.

Whatever, it's $150. I have numerous $150 devices lying around I don't use, including a T500RS racing wheel (that is worth $500).

I'll trade you a pair of Tenore ZH-DX200-CTs for the racing wheel!    :)p3
