Just got confirmation back from the horse's mouth that the Wave is both standalone and/or can be controlled via smartphone.

I'm not sure if I want to be backing a product co-developed by a horse. Unless that horse has receipts.

I already opened a ticket, so if they refund me, I'll accept it. Else I'll ride the hype train and see what the near-final product looks like. I tend to jump the horse.

Hell, I'm not even clear on what the Wave S is exactly.

The Wave S is the Wave.. sans the storage.  It's targeted at users who rely on streaming services and apps (Spotify, MOG/BeatsMusic, GoogleMusic AA, SoundCloud, etc.).. so, for those who don't store or 'carry' music on their smartphones.

I bought a Wave S for streaming from an iPhone.  It wasn't very clear that it was not a standalone DAP.  Got in at $199.  Then they "rebooted" the standalone DAPs campaign and it is called Wave.  The streaming versions are still due for a "reboot" from what I understand.  They may be called something else like "Stream"? after their "reboot".

In the meantime they offered an upgrade from the iPhone Wave S for streaming use to the standalone DAP for an additional $129 (and $1 contribution to the rebooted Wave campaign).  I did that.  However, the $1 contribution button says NOT to make the $1 contribution if we are upgrading from the Wave S so I told them the mismatch and am awaiting advisement.

As it stands, I like the Geek Out 450 so much that I bought one of the 32GB Geek Wave DAPs for $148 and will put a 256 GB card in it.

So that one plus a $328 Geek Wave X128 are on the way...next year. That's my story (and it may change tomorrow).   p;)

The geek stream will probably ship first due to the relative simplicity of the product compared to the wave.

Okay- so what was the "Wave S" and needed a phone to work with will be the "Stream" and the standalone DAPs will be the Wave.  That is certainly less confusing once both reboots are up and you can differentiate more easily.

The rebooted wave Stream will be a smartphone/stand alone dac/amp that will charge your phone, stream music via usb cable, as well as Bluetooth music. No storage, no stand alone player. Should be cheaper.

The rebooted wave is a stand alone player that's will have limited controls/functions and more robust and comprehensive controls/functions when connected to a smartphone via Bluetooth (no Bluetooth music streaming though). It's possible LH will design a bigger screen and more robust stand alone controls/ functions as time goes on and things are finalized. The higher end waves will also be a stand alone dac too (iPhone by cck only)

The whole things is a lesson in how not to run a fund raising campaign. Take money for one product, change your mind about said product mid campaign, hold everyone's money, reboot part of the original offering, constantly change it's offerings, talk of a second reboot for the other half of the original offering, not make it clear if the second offering reboot will start before the first reboot ends so funders can decide which is the best reboot for them, in the meantime you still haven't shipped out all backers and preorders of previous products that may or may not have a volume control defect, and in the meant time announce new variations of those units to be made shortly: geek out 100 and nano. Clear as mud.

They are totally aware of how confusing this was.

That being said, they realized their mistake during the first campaign, took advice from quite a few people and relaunched with MUCH clearer product messaging and significantly easier to digest product offerings. I'd rather they have gone this route than tried to manage the craziness of the first campaign effectively. That would have led to many many more pissed off customers and this way they've upgraded everyone who contributed the first time around to a much better product.

I personally wanted the original product- a device that charged my iPhone, acted as an iPhone dac/amp AND was a stand alone player with storage. For me either reboot is a step backwards. If the Stream is less enough expensive than what I was spending before, then I'll be interested. All in all it was rather frustrating, as we are not talking small sums of money.

Have no doubts on sonics though. Plenty of people I trust have nothing but good stuff to say on geek sonics and Larry Ho seems like a talent engineer and class act.

you know, there's no mention of the ability to charge your device. I'll ask on the forums to get clarification. The forum description still indicates that it does.
