DAC-Off Comparison Spreadsheet
« on: April 10, 2013, 02:20:15 PM »

I have changed the link to the DAC-Off comparison. Here is the new link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ao9CyUbvb2nFdHZ4RlZaQ2JwX1JsZG9vQlAtTmhvM2c#gid=0

The second tab has some general notes on DACs not compared side by side with the ones on the first page.

Edit - Link added on the effect of proper warmup for DACs.  Myself and some others also feel this can be noticed on some amps as well.  All DACs used here were allowed to power on for at least 24 hours before critical evaluation otherwise were notes mention distinct changes in sound over time.

Schiit really makes some great products for the price.  How big of differences are these? Are they really subtle?  If you were to take lesser dacs like the bifrost or even modi for instance, would they be getting F-?

The Bifrost and Modi would not be getting any Ds or Fs. Probably more Bs and Cs. Strangely enough, Ds or Fs tend to be reserved for specialty higher-end DACs.

That's really interesting.  I wonder- could you guys perhaps do a Bifrost or ODAC review to put things in a bit of perspective?  I also wonder(ed) about how 'lesser' DACs would compare.  Or maybe even something not so far away in price, but ubiquitous like the DAC1.

That's so good.  Makes me lol in irony when people hate on Beats for poor price/performance.  The industry is plagued by lots of expensive crap.

This thread with the Dac comparison spreadsheet should be stickied.  It would be easier for new members to find also note the second page has some general notes on dacs not compared side by side with the ones on the first page.

Sad but true. There should be a campaign to educate buyers - like Nat Geo's: When The Buying Stops Then The Killing Can To.  :)p6

The industry is plagued by lots of expensive crap.

Isn't that the definition of the industry?  :)p8

Depends who you talk to...

I ran into a girl who works in the industry. Somehow I didn't immediately think expensive audio equipment. :)p13
