Good article Tyll.  Though I don't agree that we're overly negative, I'd say we're just honest, and that most places are overly positive.  There is a Pirate's Booty as well as a Wall of Shame.  It's important to give companies credit for good headphones, but it's equally important to hold companies accountable for the crap they release and charge lots of money for.

Since right now the headphone world is almost all (mostly undeserved) praise, spreading awareness about the crap is probably the most important thing anyone can do for the headphone enthusiast community.

Nice intro Tyll - I think it sums up nicely where headphones are in general (still in adolescence compared to speakers,) and the accountability that is now coming to be expected due to measurements and discerning listening.

If we use hyperbole in our negativity, it's only to counteract the endless hyperbole in the gushing positive impressions giving to undeserving products.

I'm of the opinion that there's a middle way which may not look like the most direct route, but is when one considers the reactions of others. Your "honesty" here may not seem like it to those in the crosshairs, and they may not be as amenable to change as a result.

None the less, I think what's going on here is a natural and rational outgrowth of current conditions.

I wouldn't have pointed here if I didn't think this place had an important roll to play.
