So before the B22 there was no such thing as external PSs?

err..taht's just BS.
Power amplifiers have a hella lot more gain than headphone amplfiiers..you don't see them using mutiple chassis. At least not the majority of them.

Headroom and B22 builders ruined it in headphone amp industry. It makes good marketing sense however..lots more promotional material to add to the product webpage. 'shows' you are a serious audiophile manufacturer that you took the pains of moving the PSU into a separate box..and for others its a way to sell an add on like in the case of the Apex Volcano increasing their profit margins on the same product essentially. My humble 2 cents of course. i know a lot of you if not all of you disagree with me on this.

I haven't really thought about this before, but the HR/b22 thing is probably right.  Electrostatic HP amps (electra) have way more gain than power amps.   I think about 30 dB is typical on power amps, whereas something like the BHSE is at 54 dB of gain per headamps specs. 

When you say it's BS, are you saying it's inaudible?  I'd agree in most cases though I do remember people having actual noise issues on 1 chassis b22s.  Proper layout is probably the issue there, but I'm sure it's measurable (not necessarily audible) often enough.
