Just installed W8 Retail when it popped up on my MS Dev account.  At first, I was really angry.  Apparently MS wrote a new kernel scheduler and my audio was jerky because it kept interrupting my ASIO driver.
Then I tried WASAPI.  After various tests, I can verify that it's bit-perfect as of right now, and integrated into Windows so there are no compatibility problems!  The only "problem" I can find is that, if your DAC is 24-bit native but accepts 16-bit input, it will output 24-bit data and fill the extra bits with NULL.  No issues there, as the DAC is still interpreting it the same way!

EDIT:  THERE IS ALSO A COMPLETELY NEW DIRECTSOUND WITH A HIGH-FIDELITY, HIGH-PRECISION, ALIAS-FREE RESAMPLING FILTER!!!

So subjectively speaking, how does it sound vs windows 7? Is it darker and richer sounding now like a mac and Linux? If so, that would be awesome.

Yes.  Yes it is.
It no longer has those distorted, aliased highs caused by the ancient SRC in Pre-W8 directsound.  And ASIO is obsolete now.  The new audio system in W8 is bit-perfect and really low-latency.  And it's integrated with Windows so there are no compatibility problems.  Plug and play ASIO for USB dacs!

I have access to it because I am a MS partner.  W8 hits retail shelves on October 26th.  You might be able to find a retail copy of Windows 8 on the internet somewhere if another MS partner has leaked it already, but I wouldn't trust leaks like that.  They have had their upgrade path blocked and other such things.  The new Metro takes some getting used to, but don't fall for the negative hype.  Give it a try!

What about those beta versions? I wonder if for now those will do.

Anyone can download the Windows 8 RTM right now and try it for 90 days. It releases to retail on Oct. 26th.

To the OP, does one have to do anything in particular after installing Windows 8 for the best audio quality? Or perhaps do something for music software?

Oh, really?  I didn't know it was available to non-devs so soon!  And a 90-day grace period?  Awesome, Microsoft!
And no!  Tbe benefits of the new DirectSound will be immediately apparent.  To use the new bit-perfect audio system in foobar, download this component http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_out_wasapi and set the output bit depth to your DAC's native input depth.  :)

It's not technically "bit" perfect, because if you play 16-bit music, it will output a 24-bit stream with the extra 8 bits filled with empty space, but the DAC reads it the same way :)

The new audio server is entirely recoded!  It no longer distorts your music!  That means you can now listen to music and do other things that require sound and it won't make it sound worse like it used to.

Hmm, I was hoping to avoid the thing altogether as it seems primarily a tablet, Winphone interface forced onto a PC. Or at least wait till next years service pack to be integrated.  I'm due for a reformat as it's time to move my 4-5 year old Core 2 duo up to Ivy or Haslem so maybe I should give it a go before then.

I wonder if it'll get me closer to the PWD mk2 signature using my mk1.

Actually I would like to upgrade because Windows 7 on my Samsung Slate 7 tablet isn't intuitive at all.
