I just installed windows 8, now does anyone have any recommendations for the best codecs to install so that the media player plays all files?

I use CCCP for video http://www.cccp-project.net/
And foobar2000 for audio.
http://www.foobar2000.org/

I haven't found anything that can beat CCCP for video.  It just autoinstalls Haali Media Splitter, FFDSHOW, and various hardware-accelerated codecs to ease your watching experience.  It also comes with a very low-memory, feature-optimized media player that supports all kinds of video output options.  If it supported WASAPI output, I'd uninstall foobar altogether, as CCCP is an even better audio decoder.

oh do I have to have antivirus on w8 or is it more like a mac now hehehe.

Back to the sonics, I tried foobar and it seems to be slightly darker than w7 but its still not sounding like Ubuntu which I liked more with my dt250-250. I'll try the WMP with these codecs too and see if that sounds better.

You do not have to have antivirus in Windows 8.  Microsoft has coded a new, built-in antivirus based on their Security Essentials code that is actually very good.

As for the sonics, The new audio engine doesn't even come into play if you're using WASAPI in bit-perfect mode in foobar2000, as it's simply passing the digital signal to your DAC or sound card.

More or less.  DirectSound is not bit-perfect, while WASAPI is.  WASAPI is Microsoft's ASIO.  There is a difference between DirectSound and WASAPI, as DirectSound is resampled.
But the new DirectSound is so good that I doubt you'll be able to pick out much of a difference.

The thing I was getting at was that even when using wasapi on windows 7, the audio wasn't as good as it is on Linux or Macs to me. So now what windows 8 is supposed to do is to sound as good as the apple OS and Linux regardless of using directsound or wasapi. My first impression is lukewarm. I'll listen to more music and give it another go after i copy everything from my hard drive over and see if I notice any important differences with the w8 sound over w7 or linux/mac.

The thing is, in Windows 8, audio going through WASAPI is bit-perfect, which means it is NOT BEING PROCESSED BY WINDOWS.  The digital information is being passed without being changed whatsoever directly to your DAC.
If the audio on Linux and Mac truly does sound different, that's because they were distorting it.

ahh ok so wasapi on windows 7 wasn't bitperfect like Psychedelic whale said? I suspect there are other factors besides this and placebo but yah I'll get a mac or linux system to compare side by side and see how they sound using the same dacs and amps.
