mayhaps someone with more knowledge than i could compare the HPA V281 power output to that of the the Ragnarok as i have no idea how to convert the two spec charts. (i'm thinkin' the Schiit might be a value leader if they are close.)

Who cares about the power output when the Rag stomps all over the V281 for sound.

Not sure if I like stuffing one hole or both holes. Tending toward one hole since both holes seems kinda ghey ~Purrin

Agree with Anax - once had the V200 with me for two weeks and it sounded very warm/dark. To be honest I wasn't expecting this kind of sound from a German amp. Supposedly their Lake People gear is much more neutral, but design wise it's still kinda boring. We use Lake People G103 in the lab and there is no sign of tonal coloration.

  • Everything is marketing, the rest is consumption.

hello,

@Armaegis.

i thought it would be informative to address the "and plenty of grunt to power most headphones." remark.

as i can now suss out, the Violectrics just don't sound very good, my bad.  ;)

Owned it . I bought it because I thought it was a reference entry level amp.  hated it and sold it quickly .  One of the most disappointing buy I did.

Dunno how to say why I hated it.  Mix of Harsh/hard and clinical maybe. Boring and fatiguing with all headphones I hooked to it. I don"t remember what I tried besides my HD800 .

Trustable friends bought the V200 and sold it quickly as well.. That's never a good sign for me.

My criticism of the V200 would be rolled-off highs. As for the rest - fatiguing?

My bad. I didn't realise that appreciation threads were a no-go on this site. Never-the-less, a review or two of Violectric product incorporated into the round-up reviews could be a good idea.

I agree regarding the add-on DAC boards on Violectric amps. Probably a well-meant afterthought.

As for the review on Inner Fidelity, yes, John did seem to 'like' the V281. Perhaps Purr1n couldn't get one for the 'Best Amp for HD800' round up. As for the outlay cost for Violectric, it is good value to me. Battleship build quality, good neutrality (yep, that also means shit in = shit out and take off those rose coloured glasses) and plenty of grunt to power most headphones.

You are absolutely free to start appreciation threads on this site. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Of course others are free to shit on your parade. That is the custom here.

As for the V200 not being in the amps for HD800 thread, it's too lifeless and dull sounding to take advantage of what the HD800 can do. The price is just stupid. The M-Stage and Asgard 2 are much better amps for much less. Or for a little bit more, the BHA-1. As Tari said, the V200 had its time and place about five years ago.

V281 is much better than  the V200. More clarity and good blackness, unlike the V200 where sounds were painted a canvas of fuzzy medium gray. V281 has good pace, swing, and liveliness. Unfortunately, there was the side effect of strident treble with the better technicalities. This was a huge showstopper for me. For a little more, one cold get the Cavalli Liquid Cobalt, DNA Stratus, or EC ZDS. For a little less, Rag, BHA-1, EC BW. Heck throw in Asgard 2 as well.

Actually, I was referring to any (not the V200, in particular) Violectric amps in the HD800 amp round-up. However, thanks for your comments on the V281. Perhaps the Violectric product has been eclipsed. Tempted as I am to switch to Schiit, build quality is a concern for me. If the damn thing has to go back for repairs/warranty issues, then one would be wiser to stay with the proven. This comment comes from personal experience with the brand and with talking with other folk. However, I might test the waters higher up the Schiit product line.

perhaps passed over as being not 'tube like' (read:not enough 'pleasing' second harmonic distortion)?

BTW, very horrible assumption. Second harmonic distortion is not pleasing. It sounds like shit. Anyone who makes a tube amp with lots of second order distortion should be shot.

To me it doesn't sound too horribad, but nothing special either - an opamp design with mediocre IC's. We just needed the flat FR. It just eludes me why they figured to voice the V200 like it is - maybe too much listening testing with bright German cans.
