Might be a good idea to just not allow appreciation threads in general. Y'know, change the mode of discussion by being picky with the language used.

Yeah, we've never 'not allowed' them, but it seems this place is not predisposed to that sort of thing. We have only two appreciation threads I could find using our rather efficient search engine. One is a satirical thread about a JHA patent. The other is about a TV show. This would be the third, and the only one attempted in any seriousness wrt audio.

Not surprising as everything we have, use and recommend has something wrong with it. Mod your headphone, mod your amp, mod your DAC, mod your food, mod your car, mod your house, mod your wife =/= appreciation thread.

I mod my Top Ramen. I add several eggs to poach them in the boiling water, and then I add peanut butter on the side. Oh, and I think Vioelectric is an awesome name (thread relevance).

I liked the violectric stuff more than other pro products at the time - benchmark, antelope, Mytek, grace.  But the landscape has shifted since 2011.  I'd be interested to hear the newest amp John reviewed on IF, but it's a tall order to compete with the best cavalli, ec, etc can produce.  I still don't like how much of an afterthought the DAC board appears to be on the 281. Kind of the opposite issue to antelope who make a fine DAC with a horrible amp stage.

My bad. I didn't realise that appreciation threads were a no-go on this site. Never-the-less, a review or two of Violectric product incorporated into the round-up reviews could be a good idea.

I agree regarding the add-on DAC boards on Violectric amps. Probably a well-meant afterthought.

As for the review on Inner Fidelity, yes, John did seem to 'like' the V281. Perhaps Purr1n couldn't get one for the 'Best Amp for HD800' round up. As for the outlay cost for Violectric, it is good value to me. Battleship build quality, good neutrality (yep, that also means shit in = shit out and take off those rose coloured glasses) and plenty of grunt to power most headphones.

hello,

mayhaps someone with more knowledge than i could compare the HPA V281 power output to that of the the Ragnarok as i have no idea how to convert the two spec charts. (i'm thinkin' the Schiit might be a value leader if they are close.)

http://www.violectric.de/produktdetails/hpa-v281.html

http://schiit.com/products/ragnarok

the funky dip switches to change gain on the Violectric don't look all that consumer friendly to me, but what do i know.  :D

nice solid nemski design though, wonder if that's worth the premium.

Sorry, but Violectric is NOT transparent. Nothing sounds perfectly transparent and believe me, the V281 is even less so. The V200 even lesser still. Warm, dark and dead sounding. It actually sounds more like a lesser tube colored amp than a good tube amp that actually is transparent.

Purr1n, myself, OJNeg, and others heard the 281 at one of the fifty Canjams they had last year. We have a meet thread talking about it. It's decent but nowhere near being an amp/dac to recommend for the HD800. It's not transparent enough for the HD800 recommendation. You might find it pleasing though.

Search is your friend on Changstar (the enemy elsewhere):

If you happen to think flat or solid state=transparency, you have quite a bit of reading to do around here before jumping in again with that assertion. When you consider the V200 and V281 are both solid state and measure flat (just like most half decent tube amps anyway) and have similar distortion measurements, but sound nothing alike then you might be able to chime in again with your regurgitated 'analysis' from other sites.

People using Violectric like the V200 to color their HD800s are the ones using rose colored glasses to hide their upstream deficiencies from the transducer.

This site does have appreciation threads (like this http://www.changstar.com/index.php/topic,1307.0.html) but read through this site to find how people practice appreciation here.

It's not 'awful'. It is 'pleasing' and 'forgiving' but ends up boring if you know what actual live music sounds like. But lack of resolution, inner detail and tonal range/contrast does not=transparency. That's people hiding stuff from the HD800. Hence rose colored glasses.
