vintage receiver/amp and gear appreciation forum.
« on: April 21, 2012, 08:18:59 PM »

i planned on making this one when i first came here and joined, but me and my procrastinating self and end up with other distractions i never got around to it...

i decided since there is still lot of people still hanging on gear from the ''golden'' era of audio where audio was huge and most important, and pushed technology to what we know of today in everyday audio equipment, i find it nice to show appreciation of some of these fine pieces that are still kicking. talk about anything involving gear of the past here. might be praising, asking for help, or recommendations. doesn't matter! everything and anything vintage here!

i personally enjoy these older pieces a lot. learned a lot from them and still am learning. might be old but they sound amazing! i say i'm mainly a yamaha, sansui and harman kardon fanboy and will admit it when coming to vintage receivers, power amps and preamps,  and always will have a soft spot for kenwood cause i always felt they're really under appreciated and kenwood made lot of amazing stuff. not really too big on marantz and pioneer though. i know, i know, i'm probably gonna get flack for that but i'm willing to take it,but they did make ton of impressive gear. i think pioneer did better with their power amps than receivers, especially their dual-mono amps personally though.

sansui receivers always had that clarity and special sound to them that was hard to explain while i found yamaha and harman kardon made more clean, transparent and accurate sounding equipment, especially in their power amps and preamps. yamaha and older harman kardon designs were the first ones i ever experience to come very close to ''straight wire with gain'' in my opinion and had tons of bandwidth that never sounded rolled off in the upper high frequencies and lower sub-bass frequencies so nothing is ever missed in the music and all there. they just play it how it is.

i love older tube radios and tuners though as well. they're just awesome!

sansui 5000 is an awesome receiver. i liked it more than the AU-DX series from the mid 80's. i had a class A/B AU-D7 sansui and while specs looked better, all metal, heavy and more prettier looking i didn't find it anywhere nice sounding as my sansui 5000x did. it was one amp i wish i haven't bothered spending money on to be serviced and brought up to spec, so i traded it on craigslist.didn't take long too. after 5 minutes of it being up i gotten more then 5 hits  with offers lol.

Rock on vintage!  Pioneer SX-950 here used for headphones and speakers... Love the old beast.  Whenever I see a "what's the best amp I can get for under $100" thread I think vintage!

pioneer did make a lot of great stuff and defiantly was popular and well marketed worldwide. i like their power amps and integrated amps the most. prices for them are crazy nowadays though and i think you no longer be able to find a sx-950 for anywhere near 100 bucks anymore. even sansui prices jacked up big time and i remember picking up my 5000x in near mint condition at local thrift store for 65 bucks couple years back. i actually spent more money to get it serviced then what i paid for the actual amp. same thing with all my other amps.

You have to hit garage sales and thrifts... Your so right, People on fleabay and craigslist have gone nuts with prices.

I found an un-used Sony PS7x turntable for $20 at a yard sale after months of searching for something good... You have to be patient but there are a few deals still out there.

what model turntable exactly? sounds like a killer deal. i only have a dual 622, BIC, sony, and marantz turnrable. forgot the models exactly and there in the other room and too lazy right now to look at them. the marantz is nicest looking of them but needs a new belt but good news is it still has the original hard case shell on it and pretty good condition.don't know much about them since they were given to me when i made a trade with a local for a H/K 725 preamp but ended up with the matching set of the h/k 725 preamp and 770 dual-mono power amp with bunch of turntables. all i asked for was the preamp  but gotten lot of extra bonuses cause the guy was super awesome and really wanted my sansui.

i know about patient part, so you are correct on that. i am a very patient person and learned that, but right now i'm done searching after got hold of and serviced the H/K 700 series(h/k 725 preamp and h/k 770 dual-mono power amp) i acquired cause really happy with what i have now but knowing my curiosity gets the best of me and if i find a killer deal i can't refuse i probably try it but for now i think i have too much stuff and need to downsize a bit and happy with what i have.

i decided to give my main power amps monthly clean out(like dust and crap)

Yamaha M-45 power amp

H/K 775 dual-mono power amp

also if wondering, i use these guys to drive headphones as well(using the speaker outputs) besides using them as my main speaker amps. might be over 30 years old, but still sound nice and clean and have more reserve power then i need for just about anything. can even handle down to 2ohm nominal loads if i need them to. these are probably my favorite out of all the vintage amps and receivers i have as well.

sansui x000 series are very good receivers. i really liked my sansui 5000x when i had it. for the price, not too bad compared to crazy bidding on places like ebay and stuff with sansui gear. if it's in good condition, give it a listen see if you like it.
