I'm being as quiet as I can be (as I have another personal problem and am on the hunt for a 2105)...

It's OK CEE TEE.  Mac definitely knows how to make a gorgeous piece of equipment and its understandable why so many of their old models are such collector pieces.

Btw, I saw your info over on HC and man have you reworked your system.  I thought you were a Grado guy, what happened?  :)

the 2100 is cheaper because it's SS yes, but also because it is the 'utility' version. Same model as the ones with the big blue meters (2105), just a different case. Also, the 2100 has a set of inputs and built in volume controls so one can plug straight in with a line level source. no need for a preamp. I used it that way for years. I'm telling you, that amp, a cd player and a set of ADS speakers and you have a killer stereo for $800. My fav ADS are the l520 and l570. They can be found on craiglist for $100 or so. The are both 2 way med size acoustic suspension 'new england' style (AR, boston acoustics etc) except they use german made drivers so they have a new england sound but with more of a german flavor, i.e. tighter, cleaner, more high end. Can be a little analytical but when paired with the mac, they are just about right.

here's one for auction. the seller mistakenly labeled his auction mc250 (the 50w version) but the amp for sale is the 2100 (100W) you may get a deal since those looking for the 100w may not be seeing this one. A couple years ago, these were selling for 5-600. But seems like now 6-800........btw. these things weigh a ton. A literally messed up my back one time moving it around......another intersesting tidbit - greatful dead used these as PA amps for live shows !

looks really awesome(would love to own and hear one) but if i was spending 400 bucks for a power amp i would probably lean towards yamaha more since i usually like yamaha older power amps a lot. i still want try to get hold of a yamaha B-2 personally

http://www.thevintageknob.org/yamaha-B-2.html

also would love to pick up pair of mono versions of my dual-mono h/k770 power amp - h/k 775 mono power amps for back-up

yup! well i think he always been big fan of yamaha stuff. i'm more big fan of their separates(power amps, preamps) than anything else. i have to admit i still do like the yamaha R-9 class A receiver i have sitting around. really liked it when i used it and got it serviced. even became my favorite receiver right next to my serviced sansui 5000x i use to own. just been sitting around though since i ventured off to separates instead. done collecting receivers even though they were awesome.

over the past week i picked up a nice kenwood C2 basic preamp. i originally just been looking fr a spare over the weekend for my yamaha m-45 and stumbled upon it in the trading post i go to all the time for 65 bucks. was dirty and i remember hearing praise within the ortho crowd and ak about the kenwood basic series. i brought it home and it works perfectly. nothing wrong with it and perfectly clean inside and out. actually a pretty transparent sounding preamp and nice and clean sounding when i tested with my h/k 770 dual-mono power amp. doesn't sound as clean as the h/k 725 matching preamp for the h/k 770 but kinda expecting that but it's very awesome preamp and love it.

thing last thing on my mind was it's given headphone output since i use speaker outputs anyways to drive headphones as well but, i have to say this C2 kicks some ass as a dedicated headphone amp! i was not expecting it but sounds really nice, clean and background dead quiet driving my sextetts. i was actually surprise. found out that the c2 uses a dedicated headphone amp circuity which is pretty cool. i first thought the dedicated headphone level was annoying since i could use the main gain knob for volume anyways but after thinking and playing around i find it awesome. it's like tuning a power amps input level controls to the preamp's given gain for pefect balance between allowing enough gain where it won't clip for transient peaks while maintaining good s/n value as well. headphone out sounds dead quiet even with main gain knob maxed out(i have the headphone level set to 10 o'clock while i then control volume with the main big knob. you know when you see it)

don't have any pics yet since still pretty busy here and have no clue where my darn phone disappeared to but it's overall very nice preamp and wanted to share my quick thoughts on it.
