I've got an RT-707...need to get the caps in the Sansui and a couple of tapes!

Keep us (me) updated, Horio  ;D

Hey CEE TEE, long time to see.

I had no idea you had a RT-707.  How long you had it?  I picked mine up from a guy down in South Bay last weekend, and it definitely needs some cleaning up (you should see the amount of dust in the unit).  After I've got it cleaned up, I think I might drop it off for a tune up somewhere.  You happen to know a good guy who works on these units in the area?

I'm half tempted to send the R2R deck over to Jeff at J-Corder and have it tune it up and bling it out like this!  It ain't cheap though.

Reel to reel has that special sound many people love but can be a PITA to use. Here is a pic of the model I have:

luuuucky. closest i ever got to a decent one was a hitachi model. guy wanted 500 bucks for it though. i thought that was way too high for since i'm not i collector. i just wanted one to try out.

Had it for a while, but have been concentrating on the main HP rig and then getting vinyl rolling first...

Great about the RT-707 is the auto-rewind and really solid build.  Not as good is only 7" tapes and not the fastest speed/highest resolution.

Friend gave it to me and after hearing Doc's at the first meet- I took him up on it.

In the next couple weeks will try to replace caps in my Sansui thanks to purrin and then I can try to source some tapes to try.

Wish The Analog Room in San Jose carried tapes...have you been there Horio?

Nice setup CEE TEE!

I haven't been or heard of the Analog Room.  Is it a music or equipment store?

I have been thinking about a Tape Project subscription on and off for some time. But one of my favorite albums in their series 1 is now out of print  :'(

Oh well I have the 45 rpm Analogue Productions vinyl remaster of it.

I've been looking at those Tape Project subscriptions as well, but $300 an album scares me. Plus my 707 doesn't do 15 ips so I'd have to go buy another R2R deck. Getting a technics RS-1500 would be sweet though... ;)

$300 an album (not of your choice) is insane!

They have a selective subscription where you can choose 6 out of 10 per series. And once a title goes out of print I have seen a couple sell for $400-600 on Ebay. Most recently Saxophone Colossus sold for $500.

And there is the historical aspect of owning a copy of a master tape with no mastering done.

Ok...still. Just because it is a copy of the master doesn't mean it will sound good. Saxophone Colossus is a nice master but it still needs fixing.  I totally understand the collector's value though.

I should use my reel to reel and transfer my masters to them and sell them for $500.00. You get the additional tape hiss and problems of dealing with tape for free!  ;)

The few I have heard at a couple of audio shows have been the best source I have heard bar none.

I know you're joking in the last point, but a needle drop or CD transferred to tape is hardly the same thing as a copy of a master tape.

Why do you say Saxophone Colossus needs fixing? It's an early RVG recording in mono before he started experimenting with stereo. I've heard Tape Project's tape of this and tonally it is damn close to the SH/KG vinyl (also dry with no reverb). Any differences might even be due to different formats and tubes. I think the reason it sounds so different in different format's is mastering engineer's screwing with the sound like Doug Sax adding reverb on the SACD.
