What's your favorite snake oil
« on: February 10, 2015, 08:45:27 PM »

Sometimes when I see a product, I have to stop and admire it. It's such a dumb and obviously worthless idea, I literally could not have come up with it. It either takes a special stupid, or special brilliance to con people into buying it. So I thought I'd start a thread of the best audio snake oil.

So fill in the best  poo you can find. Whether it makes you go  :vomit: or  :)p13 or  :wheel: (turn the boat around) .

I came up with this idea when someone on headfi linked to this ebay company after purchasing a bunch of their "products"

From their description:
Elfidelity PC DDR3 DIMM Memory Power Filtering Current Booster Card --- Effective Performance Enhancement of  Your PC

More and more audiophiles use PC as their signal source in their audio system. Valab also highly rely on PC as signal source, recording and sound measurement. Using PC as in audio system have one major problem, PC use switching power supply as their power source. While switching power is quite noisy and sound very harsh! Out board sound/recording card using high quality independent power supply is a good solution. While in all case, we still need some on board device, like hard disc, and music signal still need to be processed on motherboard of PC.

This card was designed for low voltage power filtering (current booster) on your PC. It can bring clean power supply for CPU, memory and on board chips. If your PC have empty DDR3 DIMM sockets. Inserting this card on DIMM socket will bring you benefit effect on your PC.

Features of This DIMM Socket  Power Filter:
1. 4 different type of capacitors build-in, for wide range noise absorbing.
2. Compatible for standard desktop PC DDR3 DiMM socket.
3. All parts this card are high grade components, with great performance and durability.

Mods: Feel free to move this as you like. Maybe in the "Random thoughts" since this might as well be 'non-audio' stuff

No, it's easy. What surprises me (and goes against the product in its target market too) is the low price tag. There should be at least one more zero before the point.

Audiophools make the computer fit in with their thinking, rather than finding out how computers work. Anything can start as a joke and become real: different network cables sound different; different SATA cables sound different, even different hard disks sound different. Anything will sell!

Now, seriously, what's my favourite snake oil? I'm not sure, but it would be be something to do with high-end turntables. It would be a piece of highly-skilled, wonderful-looking, engineering. It would be hand made and beautifully finished. I wouldn't be able to take my eyes off it, but I might not dare touch it.

Of course, I wouldn't be able to afford it, so if anyone tells me sour grapes... they might well be right! :boom:

Weights to stabilize your sound gear gotta be my favorite. I'm not talking about keeping the toroid from wobbling. I'm talking about keeping the DAC chip stable. What a friggin' joke.

It's cheap enough that even skeptics would go "eh, why not?", and maybe that generates more sales in the long run.

Yeah, that's one been a favorite of mine for a while. Then there those little dots you stuck to your speaker that were laminated in some special way...can't remember what those were called at the moment.
