Tyll is going to be involved in this comparo as well. We'll be shipping cans to each other. We are going to do a simultaneous comparo of the headphones. Each with our own takes. I think it will be fun.

Haha.. love how the *shitty* Monoprice headphones are getting a lot of nods. It would be great if that phone actually did well in the comparison, would make for a very interesting (and super cheap) option. Never heard it myself, but I've heard good things.

Had to vote for the beyer dt440.  Iirc that's the one that's always hyped up as the most natural headphone in existence on head-fi.

its still sparkling wine but it doesn't sound as hollow as the 880s IMO. The 880s have punchier bass than the 440s though

I forgot about the dt440s.  Been a long time since I heard those.

I culled a few of the least popular options.

It's not stock, but I have a modded CAL! I'd be willing to send in for comparison purposes. The CAL 1 still appears to be on Creative's site, fully featured and all, so maybe it isn't going anywhere? They're about $70 new on Amazon now, which is great.

Tyll, am I right in assuming the new Cali does not use Foster/Fostex drivers anymore?

Sorry, dunno.  All I know is the old one sounded better than the new one to me.

I took a look at some internal pics of the CAL2, and it appears to still be using the same or a similar type of driver from Foster.

Haha.. love how the *shitty* Monoprice headphones are getting a lot of nods. It would be great if that phone actually did well in the comparison, would make for a very interesting (and super cheap) option. Never heard it myself, but I've heard good things.

They sound OK stock, based on memory. Bassy, a bit tizzy, but enjoyable. Great for the money and, IIRC, much more comfortable than the TH02 with stock pads. Lots of potential with basic mods, just don't close the vents on the cups like I did with my first mod (didn't notice the vents, ears got used to the weird sound during mod process).  I think they have an inherent upper-mid, low-treble dip, but other than that can be made to sound pretty balanced and still engaging.

Edit: Marv, if you took the CAL down, looks like it could probably be left up based on what I said at the top of this post. See: http://us.creative.com/p/headphones-headsets/aurvana-live

No modded units.

The purpose of the comparo is to reach out to newbies. I had FedEx and UPS guys ask me "what is a good headphone?" Not recommend Beats (not bad, but rip off). Not gonna recommend headphones that cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars either.

People need to start somewhere. Comparing modified headphones, discontinued odd-ball stuff, alternate versions, etc. That's nut-job territory which doesn't serve newbies. Looking for relatively cheap good shit which anyone can buy from Amazon and plug into something.

Well it does look like the CAL isn't going anywhere for the time being, based on my last post. My comment earlier about what Creative would do with it now that the CAL2 is out was more questioning and speculation. And, yup, makes sense on no modded units.
