no idea on tubes for v2. maybe try the 6bz7. that's what the force is telling me. force also says use old stock and avoid current production russian tubes.

Hello fellow Pirates,

I was looking to get a pair of 6BZ7 matching tubes for my Valhalla 2 and I was looking on eBay and I am not sure what kind to get (I have never tube rolled before). Marv suggested checking out 6BZ7's so that is what I have been looking at. I don't know what brand I should get, if I should get matching tubes, or NOS. Can some fellow pirates give me some suggestions on tubes for the Valhalla 2? Should I get matching? NOS? What brand?

Thank you for any help and advice anyone can give! And thank you Marv for suggesting 6BZ7's, I have never rolled tubes before so I am a complete newb at this.

Thank you fellow Pirates!

I received my V2 yesterday. My 'work' rig is a Crack + Speedball + upgraded coupling caps. A quick listen to V2 after warm up leaves the following impression vs. Crack:

* Crack is slightly warmer, a bit more bloom.
* V2 has lower noise floor / better micro detail.
* V2 is fast and dynamic; quicker than Crack.

Crack is running a Tung-Sol / RCA clear top.

V2 is a keeper.

What headphones did you use?
The big problem of the crack is its output impedance. I would not use headphones under 300 ohms. The distortion is too high for my tastes, then.

Could anyone provide me with a quick comparison between the Valhalla 2 and the Vali? I currently own the Vali and am looking to upgrade. My only cans at the moment are the Q701, though I ultimately intend to use the Valhalla 2 with a pair of HD800s. I am particularly interested in the soundstage of this amp as my Vali, despite it's other strengths, has really disappointed me in that department. Admittedly I may just have a defective unit as it also hisses like a nest of snakes. Any help would be great!

If your Vali hisses with regular cans like 701, it's definitely defective. I need to get my hands on a V2 to assess the stage.

In my time listening to Valhalla (version 1) vs. Crack + Speedball, the Speedball is more dynamic and less creamy but the Valhalla eases my appetite with it's higher resolution and wider stage, IMO. This is with the HD580. MisterRogers' impressions have me tickled though. Sounds like Valhalla 2 = Valhalla + Speedball.

Has anyone put the Valhalla 2 to the test with planars?

I tried it with my LCD-2F and didn't care for it. The staging presentation was pretty flat, compressed and lacking in dimensional & layering. I wouldn't call it offensive, but it certainly didn't bring out the best in them.

Not sure how difficult those headphones are to drive...?
