I'm also curious about this for the HD600 I'm getting.

Would you say the V2 is better than the Crack (with speedball), or more on the same level but with different flavors?

Can anyone with experience with both of these elaborate on this a little more? Particularly in relation to headphones with high Z (HD800).

Trying to decide whether or not it is worthwhile to keep my Crack given that it is nearly $600 worth of gear (including associated tubes) when the Valhalla 2 is only $350. I do enjoy the tube sound and would like to have a tube amp in my stable, but wonder if I might be better off putting some of that money towards improving my main system.

Thanks in advance.

Crack (assuming speedball and upgraded caps) is no slouch. I think it easily bests the Valhalla1. More expansive 'stage, quicker and more accurate delivery of transients. It's much less "tubey" sounding than Valhalla1 overall

Valhalla2 I only heard under show conditions. From memory, I think the Valhalla2 might still be warmer than the Crack in a gross sense. But supposedly those other technicalities might have been improved. It's possible that they're now on the level (or above) the Crack. Hard for myself to comment further without extended listening.

Depending on your opinion of the HD800, one or the other might be better for you.

Really need direct comparison between Crack+Speedball and Vahalla 2 otherwise perhaps too close to call. There may be minor tonal variations which may supercede technicalities.

I suspect the Vahalla 2 may be a slight bit better based technically (more resolving, better microdynamics, etc.) on these observations: I thought the Vahalla 2 was creeping up to EC S7 capabilities; but felt the Crack+SB still had a bit to go to hit EC S7's level. Anax's S7 would be the reference here.

For the record, when I say "gross" I don't mean bad or bloated tube sound. I mean aggregate or overall.

Crack needs not only Speedball (active bias) to sound technically competent, but also upgraded output coupling caps. Cheap electrolytics don't cut it.

Thanks for the comments, I guess I have a bit to think about. That being said, I just got a stepped attenuator in for my Crack, might as well throw that in and drive up the cost differential even more ;)

Hey marv, and ideas on tube rolling for the Valhalla 2?

Yes, I am interested in that as well. The Valhalla 2's input tubes can be subbed out for any 6DJ8/6922/ECC88/ECC85/6BZ7 types, including NOS. Currently I am just using the stock standard 6N1P input tubes but was wondering if any of the other input tubes that the Valhalla 2 can be rolled with would be any better than the stock 6N1P's.

The Valhalla 2 sounds great with stock, but it doesn't seem to have the warmth of the original Valhalla. I like a warm, tube sound that fellow Pirates may think would sound better than the stock 6N1P input tubes.

I also posted this in the Tubes, Tubes, Tubes -- Resources for Rollers! Thread, but since someone else is asking about it as well, figured I would post it here too.
