Introducing the HiFiMan HE-650 and HE-400i

Both have a new headband design that allows for the cups to swivel more. The HE-650 has a wood finish and weighs 380g, with an efficiency rating of 94 db / 35 ohms. The HE-400i looks to have a similar finish to the current models and will be 360g, with an efficiency of 90 db / 35 ohms.

Retail prices are said to be $899 and $499 respectively. Due out in March.

Gotta say, I don't like the way those new headbands look. Seem prone to breaking and cheap. Also I miss the ridiculously inefficient models. Here's hoping for an HE-7 flagship to replace the HE-6.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

I really like the original HE-400 with the white drivers prior to it being returned and made brighter. I'm really curious as to how the HE-400i differs sonically from the current version.

Lighter = win. Seriously, the new Audez'e models are even heavier than before, so it's nice that Fang is at least trying to make things more ergonomic.

That being said, those new headbands.... yeeesh. They remind me of the plastic headband on the first KingSound e-stat headphone. The black gimbals are totally mismatched against the wood. They look like they'd be prone to breaking rather easily.

Also seriously Fang, ditch those connectors already and adopt mini XLRs!

The headbands look nicer in these pics-- at least the HE-400i one.  I still don't like the way the 560 looks.  They're also shown with the same velours, but Fang has said they've been working on new earpads with insight from Jerg's mods.

Is the old white driver HE-400 truly that much different from the newer HE-400s?  That would explain why a lot of people cringe at the treble of the HE-400 these days.  I still end up having to EQ the treble of my white-driver HE-400 down too though.

From this angle it looks a little less awful:

But the fact that the headband has corners and has that random slit in the middle is a more than a little bit of a turn off.

EDIT: Ah, beaten to the link.

Looks like Fang might be taking some inspiration from the Abyss...

Edit: Actually scratch that. From that angle it looks more like the SR-009.

...that was the first thing I thought as well. I like the idea of a suspended leather headband, but they look like they have a lot of clamping pressure. The metal headband looks pretty thin as well.

As far as looks go I already know I don't look cool so I am fine with the design as long as it works. If I wanted a cool looking pair of headphones for my hipster Apartment Therapy pictorial I would get LCD-3s. I hate the look of the HD800 as well, but I don't care because I like the sound.

So what's the difference between the HE-x models and the HE-xxx models?

Yeah... if these sound anything good then I hope an alternative headband option arises.

We'll just have to wait for Anax (and any other pirate attending CES)'s real demo impressions with regards to the sound and ergonomics of these.

Someone just rip the headband off a Beyer DTxx0 or Ultrasone Pro model, slap it on a Hifiman and call it a day.

edit: nevermind, I just measured and they don't fit
