The gimbals look to be plastic.  You can see the mold lines running along their outer surface.  I don't know why it's so hard to polish that out before painting them for final production, especially in a product so costly.

Single-ended drivers offer less weight first and foremost, but in theory they're prone to less resonance resulting in a more open and airy sound, while they can also be prone to more distortion from a reduction of magnetic control.

Looks OK to me, certainly more comfortable (a big issue for me with the HE-500). The single-ended planar drivers sound interesting.

The most curious thing is how they managed to actually increase the sensitivity while halving the magnets. I'm guessing the diaphragms are still the same size (seeing as the cups are identical to before in terms of dimensions and design), so it has to be something different with the tracing or the way the magnets are arrayed...

Could be stronger magnets or smaller spacers.

How much of a role does the driver material itself and its construction/implementation play a role in sensitivity vs magnets, size of diaphragm, tracing, magnet spacing, etc.?

So, am I the only one that likes the new headband look? Like others have said, the headband looks a lot like STAX headphones. Not that I personally ever found my HE-400 uncomfortable when I owned it, but the new headband should be much more comfortable than the old headband.
I like it too. Much more appealing than the cobbled together apparatus they had before.

So, is there any indication regarding how easy/hard these are to drive?

The main thing holding me back from an HE-500 purchase is having to dump more money into an amp to drive them reasonably well.  If these new models are less demanding...
What amp do you have now ?
Asgard 1...

Should not be a problem (although I have not personally heard that combination, I seem to remember plenty of other people doing so).

...I just went back to an Asgard 1 review that I saw a few years ago, and it said:

It should be a great amp for the HE-500, but I don’t have the HE-500 around with me at the moment.

Asgard v2's great for HE-500 IMO. not sure about v1. is the difference huge? I forgot what I've read about it...
