It's almost as if I don't need to take marketing courses during my commerce degree. I just need to observe Head-Fi and I'll become a professional...

The hype train is going full speed ahead.

LOL, the hype is really fascinating to witness. Interesting how many people get all enthusiastic over some endorsements and announcements. If I have learned anything over the last couple of years it is to wait till all the hype has died down and people start talking turkey after they cool down a bit

I found the comfort and fit of the AD not as good as the MD.  The main reason was that the cups on the AD do not have as much range of motion as the MD- the top and bottom do not tilt as much.  This results in a weak seal under my ears (= weak bass response) and more pressure above the ears (= fatigue).  If I pushed on the cups a bit, the tonal balance was really good.  Otherwise the AD sounded a bit bass-light for me.  I have similar problems with full-sized Audio Technicas.  I also noticed that the weight of the AD is noticeably more than that of the MD.

Purrin, when do you think you will have measurements?

Wow, the alpha dog thing has really exploded on headfi. I'll be interested to see some measurements to see if they objectively match the subjective love they're getting.

It will be interesting to see how the funky hollow ABS cup design works out. I wonder if that causes resonances that are responsible for the hard plasticky sound Purrin was hearing. How long does it take to 3D print a set of cups? about 2 hours a pair?

I wonder how this might affect the market for LFF's new Slant Paradox. It's impressive that the AD's are expected to ship only month after the announcement. LFF will have some catching up to do... he's already behind 3 months behind shipping old Paradoxes!

Cheers

Yup. All custom orders are behind.

However, if you order a plain ol' Paradox, they arrive on or before the due date.  :)

Looks like I've jumped onto the AD hype train, I placed my order a couple of days ago. My new Paradox is currently on it's way to me as is my new UERM. I couldn't resist the opportunity to compare the Paradox and the AD. Here's hoping those QA issues that happened on the MD's don't rear their ugly head when I receive my pair of AD's in a couple of months. In a few days when I receive my Paradox I'll post a pic onto the thread. Luis really did a nice job on the paint job of my cups.

By the way, I was knee deep in that shit storm concerning the open source question on the Head-Fi thread. I defended Dan because I really don't think either Dan or Luis have to or should share anything involving their mods. Yes it would be awesome to know what these two guys have done inside those cups but I have no doubt if their mods were made public there would be enough parasites running around using the mods to put money into their own pockets. Dan and Luis as well as Smeggy created those mods therefore the money deserves to be going into their pockets not Joe Wannabe Audiophile who reads a few threads and sets up his own home business using someone elses ideas. I love open source products and I've quietly twiddled away countless hours reading Grado and T50rp modder threads on head-fi because I find it that interesting. Even so, when you open a home business you're crazy to publicize your mods and not protect your intellectual property. Businesses who do that aren't in business for very long because they get ripped off by their competition.

Just my view on the subject.

Just my view on the subject.

I think it can go either way. It depends a lot on the industry you're looking at and its history, the type of work, the product, the community behind the product and/or industry, and so on. I think there is merit in releasing knowledge without any intention of profiting from it, even if you know others might or will. nwavdeuche, douche as he may be, is a good example of this (unless he is actually making money from the O2/ODAC, in which case he's also a liar about his intentions). There are many products and services in the world that hold no secrets. Anyone can copy or do them. The ones that deliver the best products/services with a reasonable price and/or customer service succeed. But I also do believe in protecting unique products and ideas, at least for a time.

Anyway, my preferred scenario would have been more of a combination of open-source mods and service-based business OR customized business for work others wouldn't be able to do (ex: 3D printed cups, custom ear pads, etc.). I would also like to reiterate that I don't know everything that goes on behind the Paradox or Mad Dog, so my opinion could be totally useless.

Do also remember that there was a large T50RP mod community movement before a select few decided to make a business out of it. That certainly influences my thinking behind this. If, say, the Mad Dog were released prior to the community mod movement, then my opinions would likely be different.

Hi....  Wow, that's a lot of traffic I missed.  First, Purrin, thanks for the kind words.  Yeah, I felt your comment was right, you were looking at a little lower frequency than I was, but we worked to smooth it out further before it went to the beta users and to Jude.

Regarding the mod community I will be sharing some experiences on 3D printing.  It holds great promise, but it's not exactly like working with inkjets.  We won't share specifics of our process but we will share a few interesting things we've learned along the way.

I haven't spoken with Purrin about a measurement unit.  Hopefully we'll have more review units ready in mid-September.
