Is T50RP driver fast ? does it sound open?
With enclosure can you tune a driver to make it sound fast & having open soundstage?

The T50 driver is surprisingly capable for the price of the headphone. With LFF's tuning it's more balanced in terms of FR than just about any closed headphone at any price. "Open" depends on what you expect to get out of a sealed headphone. The headstage from the Paradox is moderate, with decent depth at the edges that narrows in middle, like the infinity symbol.

The stock T50RP sounds like crap and the stock pads are awful. The Paradox transformation is pretty astonishing, it sounds like a completely different headphone. From the measurements anyway the MD doesn't seem to be as capable, but I'm definitely curious how the AD turns out.

I really like Dan's innovative screw adjust port and the fact he pays attention to those cups !

Why the boring looks though as it would be very easy to print something 'different' ?
Of course minimalistic looks have some 'niceness' to it as well to many people.

Beats playing with tape and pieces of plastic and while on a test rig you can tune certain parts of the frequency range on the fly with a simple screwdriver.

Acc to Dan it sound like the modded T50 but with 'smoother frequency response and faster transient response' causing it to:
'set a new standard for soundstage, transparency, dynamics, neutrality and realism in a closed headphone'.

Would love to see some plots though.

The AD is a different beast altogether. I was really impressed. If there's one complaint I had about the MD and most other T50RP mods, is that they tended to sound rubbery. Think of it as the rubbery plastic earcup coloration.

The AD is more articulate, faster, better transients, low level information retrieval. Not quite HD800, but it's pretty darn good.

The only issue I heard with the prototype was a slight coloration which I think was imparted by the cups. The 3D printed material produces a dense hard plastic. There's sort of a sound when you knock on it. So there was a slight hardness of similar quality to the sound - which was otherwise quite neutral (the MDs are more laid back, a la Audeze). Dan mentioned he sort of heard the same thing in the lower treble / upper mids - so I assume he's probably fixed it.

Dan must be ordering drivers by the truckload now (I can't imagine that he'd be buying entire T50rp's just for the Alpha Dogs)

What would be the next step... developing new drivers with Fostex?

Kudos to fostex for being such a good sport in allowing Dan become real successful off their driver.

The whole thing sounds promising, it just makes me wonder if Audeze will implement something similar with their closed-back.  If they follow through with it that is.

Didn't Dan strike a deal with Fostex so that they ramp up production of T50RP specifically for him? Maybe this is why.

Though it's not just the drivers, but also the extenders / headband assembly that are part of the AD. So I'm inclined to guess that they are still using whole T50RPs as the starting point.

Well, Dan did tell me Fostex ramped up T50RP production for / because of him. I know he mentioned they won't sell him the drivers though.

Anyone have any idea just how many units he's selling these days?

I'm pretty interested in these. Can't believe I didn't think of 3D printing cups before. Oh well. I wonder how these compare to the Paradox.

Wow, the alpha dog thing has really exploded on headfi. I'll be interested to see some measurements to see if they objectively match the subjective love they're getting.

It will be interesting to see how the funky hollow ABS cup design works out. I wonder if that causes resonances that are responsible for the hard plasticky sound Purrin was hearing. How long does it take to 3D print a set of cups? about 2 hours a pair?

I wonder how this might affect the market for LFF's new Slant Paradox. It's impressive that the AD's are expected to ship only month after the announcement. LFF will have some catching up to do... he's already behind 3 months behind shipping old Paradoxes!

Cheers
