everyone knows monster beats headphones line is probably one of the most hated headphone around. with the outlash of fakes, they never helped the beats line up overall as well. Anyhoo, i got myself a pair of legit beats pro from my brother last week sometime cause his friend gave them to him cause he thought the headphone themselves were busted but it was just the cable that needed replaced.

first thing i have to say these things are built like tanks. i didn't feel this kind of weight for long time since owning a pair of 1970's pioneer monitor 10's. these thing were built really solid. the pads are twist off mechanism like the akg K4/5/6/7XX series but i find them sometimes pain in the ass to get back on cause it takes bit of patience and right feel to lock them in right. the pads are nice and soft. despite the weight i find them pretty darn comfy for good amount listening time but the weight does get to you if you don't have well developed neck muscles lol. the clamp i think is nice and secure and not super tight but then again my head is not very big in the first place but i can see these being big issue for larger sized heads.

the plug was very cool looking and pretty solid construction outside but i guess the wiring is not very good they dont last too long with people like my brothers friend. i have no idea though overall since i got the headphones with a busted cable in the first place. this was just first expression and observation with a hint of uneducated assumption. the headphone themselves had a few dents in the sides too from the kid. brother told me he never takes care of the things he has and is very spoiled. these are legit pair cause they told me the kids dad bought them off the beats website directly. i even did tons of observing online as well to conform but was kinda hard since all i had was the headphones themselves.

for cabling all i did was used an pc ipod connector for as a replacement. i had to cut bit of insulation off the one end though cause the beats will not fit any random 3.5mm jacks. the monster cable made the one end of the jack longer and thinner to fit the beats fine to lock in but, no other 3.5mm wont. i manage to make the ipod pc cable work though by trimming the insulation down to fit in all the way while staying secure.

now soundwise. i would like to note that these are currently modded by ancient aliens currently but i do remember the stock sound very clearly cause i have a memory of an elephant haha.

stock i was surprised how well they sounded. had a good bass to midbass hump going on but defiantly not overbearing by any means. it actually gave the midrange a hint of warmness which was pleasant i personally think. the high frequency energy was very good as well where they had like right level without sounding too dark at all and was very pleasant i thought. never had a bite or hurt or pierced my ears whatsoever. they also sounded clear despite the warmness they gave off. was very pleasant sounding overall and i was actually very surprised how darn well they sounded overall. i actually liked them more then the stock pair of k702.

one thing i notice to advantage to these is they can handle crap load of very high sound pressure. you can play tracks with tons of subass and output these things at very high levels vibrating the earcups but the bass will come through clearly i think. other frequency range is clear but due to i guess ear resonance from high volumes it will not sound nice and i dont want to damage my ears anymore than what they currently are at.

i did mod these though to tune the bass a tad but seems to have tons of extension still. the midrange sounds really clear as well now and like it bit more then the k702. i have to say the mids on the pros sound more neutral overall when modded and tons of good clear high frequency energy without sounding like a razorblade.

i know sounds like im giving the pros lot of praise. i am actual ly surprise myself that i am writing this. maybe my hearing did go bad or something. who knows. i just know i have to give monster credit for making a pretty darn good headphone where it's very enjoyable to listen to and not the mess the solos and studios i heard before.

i would take pics but i do not have my cable fore my phone on me cause right now i am borrowing a friends laptop to write this. i really wanted to share this and spread some clearence about the total misconception of these, especially around areas like headfi. i actually think monster did a good job on these and made me very surprised when i heard them. they work insanely well off of ipods and phones too which makes these a super deal i think. no extra uncessary baggage required to blow your eardrums if you wanted to.

P.S.

ohhh,yea....before i forget. i know some hardcore audio enthusiast that have an extraordinary extension of vocabulary of details that must be known about it's overall driver ability...i find them pretty darn smooth overall. even off my phone they sound pretty smooth and really clear as well i have to say to put it in simple mans terms with no outburst of complex audiophilia sex talk.
probably just about as smooth sounding as the k702 i think but i think the k702 gives off more impression of technicality ability cause of the massive difference in driver and pad size so it can be very possible that gives it the overall impression over the beats. the soundstage sounds good on the beats with good separation but not nearly as wide as the k702. overall i really like both.

well there you have it. my crappy mini impression with my overall horrible construction of writing ability and skills(yup i am fully aware of myself with how horrible my grammar is on the computer lol. it's ok though since...well, it's the interwebz).

I heard them two years ago at CES and did think they were Monster's best headphones at the time, though I still prefered their IEM lineup overall based on street pricing.  The Pros weren't cheap, but built like a tank as you say, nice quality aluminum as well.  I second your bass impressions but found the mids/vocals a bit recessed (more so than a new M50) and a tad on the dry side which is signature Noel Lee as you can hear on the Copper Turbines.  Don't remember much about the treble but they were the clearest of the Monster headphones at the time.  Price was just way too high ($400) relative to other price/performance champs on the market (M50 $109).  I do think they have a signature one has to be looking for and are not neutral type monitors.  So decent under those terms but 'great' would be too strong for me.  On sonics alone, I would still take my old M50 over the Beats Studio Pro for my tastes.

maybe that what it was that i found the midrange warm. guess i have hard time telling if its recessed or i just haven't practiced enough to even tell. i just thought it needed bit clearing up overall and with few simple mods it did. i would defiantly agree and i never implied them being overall neutral sounding. just can be modded to make them sound closer to neutral in my opinion but my pair is probably far from neutral still since all i want to do was find way to clear the midrange up a bit.

i haven't been around headphones or audio gear past year so i dont know how much prices went up on certain things but i do agree when i first saw the price of the pros at 450 retail i thought it was ridiculous. i dont know if they went down at all or other headphones went up where it makes the pros look more appealing. don't know.

i just probably wait till i see more of an objective form of view from seeing measurements of them to see the larger picture of the puzzle here. only reason i called them great was cause they never bothered me listening to them even at high volumes. even when i got the  bass cleared and lowered and more evened. the treble sounded more prominent as well with the modding but never bothered me even when cranked. my hearing probably is bad though or something because i do have some weird taste in sound i guess.

i know these are marketed for djs though i believe and i can see them using it. if i was a dj i probably grab these over something like the sennheiser hd-25's in my opinion if i was looking for something in 300-400 range.

I liked the Pro on audition. For the price of a new one you can buy a HD25, DAP and portable amplifier and call it a day.

Personally, the Pro did not knock the DT1350 or K181 off their current positions (I had both at the time).

I didn't know. I remember the sennheiser hd25 use to be around 299 from last time I saw them. Even though, I'd probably end up finding the pros better deal in the long run especially if you can snag up used legit pair for around 150 I believe locally usually around here.

I never heard the DT1350 or k181so I can't say anything about them.

In NL a basic HD25-1 II can be had for 150 Euros via online stores. On the used market you can find them for around 100 Euros.

The Pro new costs 300-400 Euros. That is a seriously too much money for a shiny DJ headphone that costs more than two HD25s.

And Beyers DT1350, considering you should be able to now get a non-defective one, cost ~250 Euro. With superior build quality.

The 1350 has superior build quality compared to the Beats Pro?  Not sure about that at all.  Compared to the HD25 yes.  Have you seen how much metal it uses?  It's not a rinky dink on-ear either.

Yes, Beats Pro do use lots of metal. However, the cable, while replaceable, is inferior to the typical polyurethane of DT1350, not to mention the coil is darn annoying both stretched out and not. Pads are bit nicer. DT1350 tend to catch long hair, are lighter but instead of foldable, possible to lay out flat.

Have some dismantling video of this or related model: and
Pretty good construction, but 400 Euro, really?
