I actually liked the Beats Pro quite a lot... a lot of people complain about the price but as mentioned, they are well built and look good to boot. The Monster headphone that I have liked the most as of now though has been the new-ish Monster N-Pulse! (second iteration of N-Tune I think). You can find it pretty cheap on eBay but it retails for like $200. I find it excellent sounding with hard hitting bass, warm overall coloring, Ok mids and highs.

What I hadn't noticed though was the similarities between the Beats Pro and a new headphone I acquired recently, Perfect Sound D901:

the D901s retail for $800 or so... ... ... ;) Good sounding too btw.

Impressions:

Perfect Sound D901 == GREAT BASS!!!

Directly comparing it to the Ultrasone Signature DJ right now... D901 actually sounds MORE energetic in the upper-mids and up. It seems it's more sensitive too as at the same volume Sig lack a bit. (Ok... just double-checked, D901=16Ohm, Sig DJ=32Ohm)

I can definitely say... this is too close to call... Listening to:

Bass response, slam and attack is fairly similar. Vocals are a bit more up-front on the D901s.
Love how both sound here.

Changing gears for a bit, I really like Alison Krauss and the song Sinking Stone is one of my favorites. Again, TOO CLOSE TO CALL! Alison's vocals seem more forward, guitar separation sounds similar to these ears, great vibe, sounds a bit more airy and open... this is probably that bit of detail I mentioned about being more "energetic" up top.

If you haven't heard it by now, Daft Punk's RAM is a really good album. One song I like is Giorgio by Moroder. It's been like almost a month since I had listened to the Sig DJs and, these are the tracks that make you fall in love with these cans...

Anyway, just played it with the D901s... same results!
Bass is explosive, decay is excellent, details just BURST out with energy. It still feels more forward, airier. Again a close call. I've had the D901s for two weeks now I believe and this is really the first time that I'm doing AB compare directly... no question, these are very well made!!!! And, they are definitely basshead material!!
