Mytek Stereo 192-DSD DAC Review - Impressions
« on: March 22, 2013, 06:05:25 AM »

Mytek Stereo192-DSD DAC "Review" (only partially complete for specified reasons.)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ao9CyUbvb2nFdHZ4RlZaQ2JwX1JsZG9vQlAtTmhvM2c#gid=0

Part of the same series of DAC comparisons:
  • PWD2 (rev1 upgraded)
  • Schiit Gungir
  • Mytek Stereo192-DSD
  • Matrix X-Sabre
BTW, had a micro-meet tonight were LFF and Anaxilus were invited. All four DACs were heard on my current speaker setup. The Mytek was plugged in and left on for two days before this event.

The Good:
Micro-meet was fun! Many thanks to Purrin for hosting a lovely, intimate evening. After a long day at the office, it's a treat to kick back with a great drink in hand and share some good music with great friends.

Purrin's DIY speakers sound better to me tonight than ever before. VERY nice, natural sound. I was truly enjoying the sound...that is...until...the BAD

The BAD:

DAMN YOU MYTEK!!!! What a piece of crap! It's a shame I didn't cotton to put in my ears. Literally had me cringing two seconds in. Anax and Purrin gave it more of a chance which resulted in me being tortured to more of an extent than I would have liked. Treble peak and grain galore! Ruined the sound and overall presentation of what would otherwise be great music. The HD-700 of the DAC world.

'Nuff said.

I am starting to feel like the PWD is to changstar as kevin gilmore designs are to headcase.

I also feel like my first negative karma is incoming.

AFAIK only a handful of people here even have the PWD.

I think more pirates have KG designs, actually.

Edit: Where the hell did your post go, raif? Oh well. Quoted for posterity.

I mostly talk about music there. Weird.

Also we're clearly Schiit and Eddie Current shills, not really PS Audio shills.

Yeah, the PWD is merely out for the ride.

At the LAX meet, I swear half the DACs there were PWDs.

Curious to hear this thing now, although comparisons to Benchmark make me reflexively tense my neck to brace.

Yeah as great as the PWD mk2 has been so far, it's not perfect w/ a couple of exceptions that would need many dollars to be thrown at it to fix.  I'd also cringe at the thought of being a Paul acolyte.

I had just been reading the various dac reviews lately and the comparisons to the PWD started to remind me a bit of how on head-case everything doesn't quite stack up to the KG stuff.

Of course then I tried to be flippant in my semi-inflammatory characterization in hopes to evoke a response that would keep me from getting to work.
