DACs in general do tend to have less of a problem w/ plankton than most amps.  Should tell you something....

More DAC comments, including M51: https://docs.google.com/a/changstar.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ArbLaKZd_-FsdGpvaWxoV2NtaEZYaWQ1ZHZsWkZtWUE#gid=1

Thanks Purrin,

I was looking at open boxed M51s on crutchfield for $1599.99, hopefully they'll have another one in stock in the future or I'll see a used one pop up on audiogon

I answer for myself...

I'm very critical of stuff that is "forgiving". IMHO, if it's forgiving...it's crap. I can see how some people might like that and that's fine - I might not smash a product for being forgiving. On a personal level, anything that doesn't resolve a bad recording into what it is, is crap. Add brightness or other nasties to it and I'll be very unforgiving.

I seem to not be able to find the M51 comments, am I somehow being sent to an old version? Is there a column for the M51?

Thanks for clarifying the "plankton".  For me the term plankton makes me think of these small artifacts floating around in the sound.  I like it though, quite a creative way to describe low level resolution and detail.

One more question, between the x-sabre and the gugnir, which would you say has better depth?

LOL, that's exactly it! It also comes from being able to hear the nature of tape hiss and grain with very resolving systems. Metaphor. It's really really hard to use words. Vulcan mind meld is better.

About the same. The X-Sabre is wider which does make it sound more open. The Gungnir is more closed in. The difference are small, at least with speakers. I can try it out on the HD800 or the HE500 tonight if you want.

I will agree with Luis about the X-Sabre tending towards thin. I think this could be a function of the wider sound Purrin describes above. I actually like it being a bit thin as it gives that space between to truly isolate sounds instead of them being slightly fat on most systems making the sounds blend together somewhat.

Thanks Purrin, I have the HD800 so hearing your thoughts on depth with those would be great.  As you alluded to, I don't imagine it will be that big of a difference between the speakers and the headphones, but maybe it will put my mind more at ease.  Considering my research was leading me towards the Mytek, I think I will try to stick with something that is more "changstar approved" like the x-sabre or gugnir.  At least I will be more confident in the pros and cons of each unit.
