Title: Treasure Maps

Post links to deals -audio or other treasure- here where it might go to a fellow pirate, and isn't viewable by lurkers.  If you're going to bid on an item that gets posted here, you should say so, that way we're not bidding against each other.   :-*

An excellent idea!

I'm bidding on that Sansui SS-100 you showed me, Whitney.

AKG K400 on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/AKG-K-400-Headphone-Project-FREE-SHIP-US-NR-/190694052281?pt=DJ_Gear_Lighting&hash=item2c664051b9)

These have a broken cable and so are likely to go cheap, even fully functional K400's go for pretty cheap as they often go unnoticed.  Could be a great deal for anyone with some cabling skills.  I've heard a couple K400 and they did sound different- one much better than the other (from memory) so they have some variation, but they have the potential to be one of the better dynamics out there IME.  The better pair had bass south of neutral for sure, but gorgeous, airy and rich vocals, huge airy soundstage ala K701, and slightly bright but non fatiguing treble.  At the time I had the better pair, I liked it more than any other K4/5/600 or K4/5/6/701

I hope you get them!  One of the rarest headphones out there.

Great idea for a thread :D

Let me know if you guys have any good balanced speaker amp suggestions (sub-$1500) to use with a HE-6.  I was going to get a Pass Aleph 5 until reading some criticism that it doesn't pair that well with rock and bass-heavy music.  I heard the Ayre V-3 is a great alternative with more bass presence and impact for a similar price, but I can't find one for sale anywhere.  Would love any other suggestions for speaker amp gear to look at, as I decided not to go for a vintage receiver.

There was a B24 going for $1100 at the recent ChiUniFi , SoupRKnowva on HF had it but wasn't going to buy it. He used it for the HE6. This is mighty overkill but one hell of an amp for about 3/4 of parts cost.

Please let me know if any of you run across a used HE-Adapter for sale.

Not sure if I have the cajones to hook an HE-6 up directly to a pair of 1040W monoblocks, though someone told me it's been done before.

scratch that - monoblocks could imply differential output. You may not want to have a common ground.

Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: rhythmdevils on June 27, 2012, 05:22:14 AM
Is there any reason to get a YH2?  I always figured they weren't worth it since they have the same drivers as the YH3, but are in a less ideal enclosure with that radar dish in back.

Still a decent price considering all the 400 BIN's

If that's the case, there was a google doc I had been working on for the best deals on pretty much any headphone:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjYHSFFtwxPfdEtkQmowVXBVTVZENTVhMnB6a19STnc#gid=0

Hasn't been updated in a couple months but many of the deals are still current.  Think I posted a thread for this on HF but don't remember what I called it.

Working mint pairs sell on hf for 100-120 and on ebay for around 60. Id want to pay 20 or less for the broken ones but maybe a bit more.  Then wors case if it winds up sounding like rubbish you can make some money off your recabling efforts
Title: Re: Treasure Maps

Cool!

Thanks!

If I win them, I was going to re-cable them, have Purrin measure them and then pass them off to my dad as a gift.   :)

Cool!  I'd love to see measurements, my first pair was a K500 w/k400 drivers by fitz, and he claimed the enclosures were identical so I figured they were just a 400.  I could have gotten more picky, but the next pair of K400 I heard didn't sound that good.  Vintage AKG was kind of like Beyer is today, except it was the 80's and they had the coke excuse...

Definitely!  Any kind of deals, even if they're not audio related.  Though I suppose some thing might not be of interest, like 2 for 1 cheeseburgers at Mickey D's.

THanks for the heads up on the 35's, I'm going to buy a pair and have them sent to Purrin.   :-*

Wharfedale ortho on HF for 250 dollars (http://www.head-fi.org/t/616155/fs-ft-wharfedale-id1-vintage-ortho#)  ??? ??? ???

Don't buy it.  These things sold for dirt cheap when they were in production.  And I think he's probably flipping them for substantial profit. (He's not, confirmed by Guru) Maybe their sound is worth 250 but these ortho prices are sad...

Two hours left.  Brand new K1000 (OBO) currently at $1000.  I prefer the HD800's to these, but they still have some redeeming features, and this is about $300 cheaper than they go used/good condition.  I'd snap them up myself but I'm trying to get some UERM's at the LA meet discount next month.

NOS Original AKG K141.  It's like a supraaural Sextett, sounds remarkably similar, in fact better in some ways but smaller soundstage.  Very musical, warm, non fatuiging but lacks the refined treble of modern phones.  Of course, there's probably different versions so no guarantees...

These supposedly need new earpads.  K141 pads from the new models should fit if you use some double sided adhesive tape.

Thought I'd post this since the price of these have been going up lately, and the M50 seems to be borderline are Pirate's Booty status around these parts.

Adding the M10 is only a filler to qualify for free shipping. Alternatively you can pay for shipping, or just add anything that's around $20.

I actually got that deal on the M50 about a month ago. For that price they're good, though I don't think they're worth $160. Interestingly it affirmed one of the reasons I started researching headphones; closed + shitty pleather is not comfortable for me at all.

From the Tokyo Fujiya headphone festival impression thread (http://www.head-fi.org/t/609804/tokyo-fujiya-avic-headphone-festival-spring-2012-meet-impressions#post_8378494):

For comfort, you can always make an impression of your own ears with diy kits. Make a mold with silicone, then use silicone again to construct your own custom fit plugs. I did it, quite easy. You can always get UV activated hypoallergenic coating from Dreve if you worry about such things. Distributors sells them both in the US and Canada, probably in Australia too. There's also businesses that makes these plugs for you, perfect for other iems as well.

The new amp looks slick, though the design of the IEMs is basically the same, save perhaps for the plug.

I saw a pic of a custom mold for the tiny stax that looks to be just the ticket. Unfortunately there was no info on who was responsible for the implementation.

Here's hoping they're rebranded 001/3's endorsed by a shitty musician!!!!

Seriously though, I am a bit skeptical given Stax's recent buyout by a seemingly very commerical company, and these being portables they are aimed at a more popular market.  But let's hope these were already in development before the buy out or they're just a rebrand...

As far as I know, Edifier don't plan to change anything at all in Stax Japan, they just want to use the technology for future products. The owner of Edifier is a big Stax fan. I don't think Stax would have let themselves be bought out by just anyone. Likely the portable is being updated partly due to how regularly the available silicon for such things becomes unavailable. AFAIK they only have one engineer who works on everything, one product at a time.

Don't know if this one guy reads the mammoth stax threads but if he does there must be some major pressure with his products being picked apart by so many people and examined for every flaw and imperfection, knowing that it's all directly attributable to you..

Another sr-001 combo (http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r92234654). Ends in about about a day. Not too bad of a price. Ultimately depends on what the cost of the new stax portable system will be though.

The good thing about kuboten is that it's headphone oriented, however I'm not sure how quickly they're sending out packages these days.  You might want to shoot Amos a PM about it since he knows Craig personally.  I haven't looked around at this stuff for a year or more, but I remember kuboten being a bit on the expensive side.

Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Elysian on July 28, 2012, 09:23:49 PM
I was actually just wondering about the 407 since it's substantively cheaper than the 507.  What's the difference between the two?  I read a few people on HF say the 507 is slightly better than the 407, but then other people say technically they are the same thing but with different cosmetics.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll reach out to Amos.

They have the same drivers. Different pads though. That would cause the most significant difference I think. If you go to staxusa and take a look at the cost of the replacement 507 headband, thats where a lot of the cost went.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Elysian on July 29, 2012, 05:36:14 PM
Wow, that seems really expensive for a headband replacement assembly.  I think I read one or two people say their 507 headbands broke on them soon upon receipt, too.  If the drivers are the same, 407 seems to have much better bang-for-buck.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps

Pads are critical for headphones though.  Better pads could make all the difference in the world.

Post by: ujamerstand on July 29, 2012, 06:20:59 PM
Yes. And 507 pads are clearly better seal and comfort wise. You can get those from staxusa as well. Probably cheaper from ebay though.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Elysian on July 29, 2012, 09:02:20 PM
I haven't tried replacing pads yet, but I am curious to go between the velour and leather pads on the HE6s since a lot of people say there's an appreciable difference between the two.

I'll keep an eye out for used 407 and 507s and grab whichever pops up first for a decent price.  Aesthetically, I like the black on the 507s more, though I'm a bit concerned about reading one or two posts about breakage.  Kicking myself for not picking up a used 507 when a few were going cheap earlier this year during a slow spell.  People seem more interested in Lambdas recently.

My general impressions when I tried switching pads were that the pleathers made them sound a bit darker and with with more bass impact. The trade-off was that you get an even smaller soundstage, and the HE6's soundstage width isn't very good to begin with. With my preferred amp (a Bada PH32 speaker amp), the HE6 doesn't sound too bright at all even with velours so I immediately went back to the velours and use the hifiman pleathers on my modded Q40.

With the pleathers, I felt that the diminished soundstage was because the pads were too thin. I think if you can buy two sets of pleathers and stack them on top of each other (like what a lot of T50rp modders do), then you can get the slightly darker sounding sound without the soundstage tradeoffs.

That would significantly change the sound signature too though, not just increase SS.  Generally speaking, you'd get moar treble and less bass.

Yeah that's probably true :( Now I'm thinking of those pad mods where you get slightly smaller pads for the T50, and then wrap bigger pads around them? I think the "bigger" pads were SRH840 pleathers on the T50.
Really should get Dyaems to talk about his modded T50RP, he's a member here.

Another thing I should compare is what's brighter between double stacked pleather pads and the stock velour ones, for the HE6.

Someone on HF contacted me asking for 1200euro (plus additional shipping/fees/paypal) for a good quality HE60 that was given a clean bill of health by Sennheiser within the last 12mo.  The end has been reterminated to a Stax pro plug

Is this a fair price, or should I keep looking?
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Tari on August 07, 2012, 06:21:09 PM
Assuming it is in 8/10 or higher, that's way lower than they've been going the last year and a half.  That's about $1500 USD at current exchange rates, they've been going for $1800-2100.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Elysian on August 07, 2012, 06:37:16 PM
That's what I'm figuring, too.  With fees/ship/Paypal, I figure that's another $250.  The thing I'm concerned about is that it's a low post user with no trade history, but since it's Paypal, I figure I'm protected?

I've been seeing $1800-2100 prices for HE60, though some of them cover shipping, others come with the HEV70 (which I don't need) bundled in.

Still on my search for a nice vintage sub-$300 D/A for someone I'm building a rig for.

Does anyone know if the Theta Chroma 396 for $179 (+$30 S/H) is a good deal?  It seems like it's a step up from the Theta Cobalt, but I read mixed reviews on the Cobalt.
www.ebay.com/itm/THETA-DIGITAL-396-CHROMA-DAC-WORKING-DIGITAL-ANALOG-CONVERTER-/150873703743

Per sachu's suggestions, I have the Parasound 1100 HD, Camelot Arthur MK3, and Adcom GDA 700 on my list, but haven't seen one yet on the usual channels.  I'm assuming those are better than comparably received used 5.1 and 7.1 receivers with D/A functionality.

Not really an opportunity, but more of a warning to fellow pirates.  The person selling the Orpheus set on HF was convicted of trader fraud by the SEC.  It seems like he's selling off the Orpheus set to help with finances.  Given how high the asking price is, out of good conscience, I wanted to let fellow pirates know that this person may have questionable personal ethics, and that they should be careful should they engage in a purchase.

I'm not posting links since they contain personal information, but due diligence was straightforward.

Yet he wants to have a video conference with whoever buys it. LOL. Would be kind of funny if during the video conference, the other person brings that up...

"So, you were convicted of fraud? What's that about?"

I was kind of weary of the sale anyway as 1.) he was selling a SinglePower amp without any kind of disclaimer; 2.) he balked at the suggestion of selling the HE90 alone despite the HEV90 not even matching in serial number and his offering a second amp in the same thread; 3.) he still has his HeAudio 1.2B listing up despite my contacting him about it and his telling me it was no longer for sale; 4.) The HE90 looks like it has rust or some sort of discoloration in the metal adjusters, though that could be some weird lighting at work.

It's pretty damning, without any sexing up.

Quote (selected)
In addition to misrepresenting the value of the fund, X also misrepresented the reason for the undisclosed losses. During several trading periods throughout 2008, X blamed the losses on the ā€œrollover strategy,ā€ minimizing these declines as merely artificial ā€œpaperā€ losses or ā€œprojectedā€ losses tied to open option positions. In reality, these losses represented actual, realized trading losses.
...
During the year, X caused the fund to pay his management fees based on the inflated fund value. In addition, he caused the fund to redeem units at the inflated value, to the detriment of investors who remained in Y as well as the fund itself.

While he might be a good guy who just got in over his head, when it comes to this much money, I'm pretty uncharitable about equating a person's professional ethics with his personal ethics.  There are also a few articles about him bragging about his jetset lifestyle and a multimillion dollar renovation of a SF bachelor pad.  He seems pretty sketchy.

I had concerns about the non-matching serial numbers and the SinglePower amp, too.  I know there's a few of us interested in the HE-90, and I don't want to see any of us get fleeced.

Still debating Buffalo 3 build vs. vintage DAC (spending less on setting up another rig means more $$ for headphones!).

There's a Parasound 2000 DAC up on eBay starting at $450 which I'm watching.  How well does it punch in its price bracket?  Will the increase to the Buffalo 3 be appreciable in quality?  This will be for a close family member's rig.

Edit: Looks like $450 is pricey.  I'm seeing $350-400 for used units within the last 7 years.  I also read that if the converter develops an issue, then any repairs are unlikely.

Could someone recommend an economical and well-constructed headphone stand to use with the SR007, HE6, and HE60?  I'll be keeping antistatic bags over the headphones when not in use.

In the case of the SR007 in particular, I'd recommend getting a headphone hanger over a headphone stand so you don't wear out the foam inside the earpads and end up replacing them more frequently than necessary.  I like both the Koss and Sennheiser hangers and they're cheap to boot.

Yaki's FS type mabe? It preserves the pads.

If you want, I can try putting my HE6 over it to see if it fits.

By getting a headphone hanger, do you guys mean to make sure that the pads aren't pressing on anything?

What's the FS model for the yakiboy?  It looks nice, but will it wear on the pads pressing on the wood?  Also, how is the longevity on the wood?  I noticed he's charging a much more reasonable price for his curved wood stands than the European guys.

I'm still unsure what kind of stand to get that won't strain the headband or pads.  For example, I don't want to stretch the elastic headband on the SR007.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to buy the PX4's.

I've owned the EML's, KR's, and currently just have a set of EAT's.  The KR's provided the best balance of transparency and tube presence for me.  I actually prefer the EAT's to the EML's but that's just because EML has been pumping them out lately for Jac and quality has gone a little downhill.

Elysian - Purrin has the NOS PX25 mod on his, perhaps you heard his BA before the mod, as it doesn't do 300B any more...

By the way, I'm going to post some pictures to illustrate just how much KR sucks now.  That's why I'm buying these tubes - all the most recent ones are total and utter junk.

Given that I already have a MK2, would you recommend that I get the MK1 or MK2.5?  I heard n3rdling's MK1 and it was nice on his BHSE.  I didn't have my MK2 so I couldn't do a comparison but they sounded really close.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Tari on October 12, 2012, 09:26:11 PM
I've never heard a 2.5 so I couldn't compare - Spritzer's insistence about the MK1's superiority had crawled its way into my brain like some over-opinionated icelandic tapeworm and made me unable to order any other version.

This is a price where if you don't like it (think it too aggressive or mid-sy or whatever) you'll lose hardly anything on resale, so it's a win-win.

Is the 2.5 the same as the A? Or is there an updated version of both the MK2 and A?

As far as I'm aware, there are only four "official" versions of the SR-007: MK1, BL, MK2, and A. Some insist there's a sonic difference between the MK2 and A, while others insist the only difference is cosmetic. I'd imagine if there is a difference it would be extremely minor.

As far as I know, MK1s are serials starting with "700x" which later became "SZ1". There's the Japanese domestic champagne/brown and the US market silver/black. The MK2/A is "SZ2" which is silver/black in Japan and all black in the US. Keep in mind that Stax calls it's domestic amps "A" and export amps "II". I think that's where people might be confusing differences between MK2 versions where there aren't any. The so called "MK2.5" is serials "SZ3". According to Spritzer the tonal balance was shifted quite a bit on SZ3 versions which are supposed to be considerably brighter.

I've never heard of a silver / black mk1. To my knowledge, the ones for both Japan and the US were champaign with brown leather, and the ones for Europe were champaign with black leather (aka "007BL". The silver with black leather is the Japanese mk2 (aka "007A") and the all black (aka "007mk2") is the US version.

I was talking about the 007mk2 versus 007A versions of the SZ2 specifically. Some people insist there's a difference: ie. Stax released the 007mk2 first in export markets and then based on impressions of it tuned the 007A slightly for their domestic market. I've heard stories about the bass being better on the 007A, on it sounding more like the mk1, etc. Sometimes the very same individuals saying one thing were saying completely different, contradictory things prior. Personally I don't recall hearing a difference between the 007A and mk2.

I haven't heard the SZ3 yet, but I've seen the same range of claims about it.

Personally I take these kinds of things with a grain of pepper.

From what spritzer's written, I think he said the SZ3 uses the same diaphragm as the 009.  Not sure what that actually means in terms of the sound signature, though.  I've read a lot of conflicting reports about the SZ3 so I'm not really sure what to believe about it.

Btw, a bit off topic, but why have a few people tried to trade down from their BA to a ZD, aside from money considerations?  I heard a Zana at the Bay Area meet and it didn't really grab me with the HD600 or LCD2.2.

I'm talking to someone on HF about buying their SR007 MK1 for around $1500 (give or take a bit).  It has the MK2 pads, but the headband or headpad (trying to clarify finding out which one) looks old and is not elastic.  Trying to find out if it there's any cosmetic damage to it, too.

Is this a decent deal?  I've found two almost brand-new MK2.5s for under $1500 shipped.  It sounds like the 2.5 is very similar to the 2, so I'm leaning towards the MK1, but I'm a bit concerned about wear and tear on older MK1s.

Any replacement/maintenance concerns I should be aware of with the older MK1s?
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: MuppetFace on October 19, 2012, 05:55:01 PM
The MK1s come up quite a bit, you just have to be patient. Most of the time I see them going for more than they should, ie. $1800. I think $1500 would be a fair price if it were pristine. I'd try to get them to come down.

As for the MK1 and any concerns, wasn't there a spring issue that Stax corrected with the MK2? My mind is drawing a blank this morning.

Just saw that some of you guys got really good condition MK1s for $1400-1450 plus shipping and fees.  I figure the MK2 pads are a nice addition, but the old/worn headband and headpad is a turnoff.

The headband are the two rigid arcs on the top of the headphone, and the headpad is that elastic thing that goes on hair, right?

I guess for this specimen, I probably want to be closer to $1400.  Looks like there are two chips in the silver paint, and the headband is loose.  Passing on this one, as I saw dave selling his for $1400-1450 in much better condition back in May.

They only had one left at that price and it was the demo unit. If you want one, I can try the other airport in San Jose this weekend.

No need to go out of your way mate. Only put the question out on a whim in case you bagged a few and were looking to offload.

If you guys come across bargain HD650's though I'd be all over that. The MAP and restriction placed on authorised dealers to ship overseas is making it difficult to source one at a reasonable price.

Fledgling speaker etailer's own line of speakers just went belly up, so here's a pair of three-ways each with a total of 5 scanspeak revelators (including 7000s), a DEQX pre-amp for the crossovers and 600w class-d amplification for the system. The starting price is 4k$ + 1k$ shipping from the UK and it might be worth it given the parts and the performance potential.

Don't forget the 2-4 ZDs that went up for sale during Nov-Dec last year... prices were between $1400-1600, I think.  I wonder if we'll get a similar selloff of headphone amps this year once we get closer to Thanksgiving!

There's always the possibility of one being up for sale + cash for a spare BHSE...

Would be tempting if I decide to work on a second KGSSHV!  I will keep it in mind, though I'll be loathe to part with the BHSE due to the incredible build quality.  I love the gray color, as it's reminiscent of the BMW anthracite gray.  It's interesting how much the BA prices fluctuate.  I kind of wish I jumped on the one up on HF back in April, though that'd necessitate me picking up an HD800, assuming that the HD800 is still the best headphone for the BA.  For my own tastes, I tend to find that tubes/coloration matches well with headphones I find a bit too technical or sterile.  The few times I've heard the BA, the HD800s always sounded better than the LCD2.2s.

$1400 seems kinda low for a ZDSE.

There was a period when they were going $1300-1600 last year (I think I saw three separate ones for this listing).  Could be my memory's fuzzy as to whether they were ZD's or ZDSE.  Mr. Sneis' comes with quite a few decent tubes though, and seems like a good price in the current market.

Pretty sure they were normal ZDs and not ZDSEs, but I do recall the prices being somewhere around the 1300s (or even high 1200s) to 1600s, since I distinctly remember them being in S7 preorder territory.  I've read that it's a buyer's market in audio right now, and I can imagine we'll see a similar trend this holiday season on the used market.

Someone shared this with me, I thought I'd pass it on.  This one interest me.  PWD minus the UI?   It's not clear how much technology it shares, I've heard it does not have the digital lens.  That's a pretty nice discount with the current "trade-in" offer.

Wasn't that the guy on head-fi trying to trade it for a T1? If not, then it's a guy who traded his T1 for that guy's PMB, because I recognize those pictures.

That price is bullshit, I don't care how rare those are. It doesn't even have a transformer.

As far as I know, the housing and drivers are shaped like Yamahas but sound a bit different.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: gurubhai on November 22, 2012, 06:26:56 AM
Congrats!

These are supposed to be best of the soviet orthos along with the tds-7(that's what the russians say at least!).
The housing is almost identical to yamaha HP-1(of which it is supposed to be a clone) but the driver is more like a PMB one.

My own pair came modded so I can only guess how a stock pair would sound. It shouldn't be unlistenable like a lot of vintage orthos since these don't seem to need much damping. You would need some good sealing replacement pads though.

@shipsupt : ya, the modding potential is great. I transplanted these drivers into a PMB80 shell & it sounds really nice.It clearly held its own against the modern orthos in the last meet we had.

No idea.  I've only heard one Dared amp and it wasn't very good, but this might be better.  Its basically a throw in as the listing is worth it for headphones + tubes.

It's not the latest Offramp 5, but there's Empirical Offramp 4 w/ Hynes SPDIF, Turbo Clocks, latest transformer, and Dynamo power supply for $1650 OBO on Agon.

Not sure if it's a great deal as Empirical stuff doesn't go up too often, but worth a look if you're looking for a high-end USB/SPDIF converter.

SR-007 in nice cosmetic condition for 150k Yen.  It looks like a mk1, price is good for BIN.  Total would come out to about $1605 + shipping from japan.

https://www.rinkya.com/en/auction-183988161

I use rinkya now since the fees are much more reasonable on expensive stuff than kuboten and the site is more professional.  This auction ends in 13 hours, so if somebody is interested in buying this but can't complete the rinkya application process in time I am willing to buy it and then you can pay me later if I know you.  I *think* the ad says it's in working order but the translation sucks...anybody speak Japanese?

I am not familiar with rinkya.com. How do you know what the fees and shipping are going to be? Do you just guess and hope for the best after you buy the item? I am considering it...

Says here (http://tinyurl.com/mxfrcly) that 149,000 yen works out to $1463 USD without any shipping. So does your $1605 include fees but not shipping? If you have to add shipping on top of the $1605, then I don't think that's such a great deal, is it?

I haven't really seen any Mk1 go for less than 1800 the past few years, most are around the 2000 mark. but I don't particularly look for it so I could be wrong. it seems like a decent deal to me.

err I sold mine to a matey here for 1500 shipped i think. Really was one of the better sounding MK1s I have come across. He concurred and said his other MK1 doesn't sound as good.

I actually told him, if he ever sells it down the line, i get first dibs!

Also this is a decent price on a good condition HP-1.

If I didn't already have an HP1 and a Yh-1 i'd be all over this.

At 15-1600 OK but it looks like someone snagged paradox's pair for 2k??  What the?  I sold a secondary pair I got as a combo with amp for what I got it for or roughly $1600 for the o2's just a few days ago.  Guess he must have gotten the steal of the century?  I don't think so - something's weird here.

$1500-$1600 in the US is about right for what MK-1's have been going for as of late, but as prime specimens become harder to come by I think you're going to see that price sneak up.

You're likely to spend 20% more on them in Europe.

I'm not sure about the Asian market, likely similar to the USA.

In his defense they appear in great shape and I think they are black/brown rather than the more common brown/brown.  Or it could just be shitty picture taking.

I haunt the classifieds of all our forums like a hawk.  It blows my mind sometimes how hard of a time I have selling some of my gear dealing with lowballers and "negotiators of certain ethnicities" and then you get other sellers who seem to ask outrageous prices selling stuff like it ain't no thang.  I'm just getting senile!

Right. I missed that Sale Pending part of the ad. But still, we don't know how much he is actually getting for them.
I wish they would do it more like EBay so people know how much things are selling for and how much they're worth, etc. Historical sales figures would be helpful. I use that feature all the time on EBay. Of course, A'Gon charges you if you want to see their data.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: n3rdling on May 08, 2014, 09:28:24 PM
I paid for that audiogon feature for a year, it worked pretty well for most stuff.  It was useless for rare items though...like the Stax X1t "average selling price" of $20,000 since only one was sold there up to that point in time.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Mr.Sneis on May 08, 2014, 09:45:52 PM
Careful with ebay... there was a o2mk2 for instance that was up and had bids... I was one of them.  Then all of the sudden the seller pulled the plug.

So what do you see now when you search? An o2mk2 that closed with no bids at $1000.  Misleading much?

I noticed ebay is a terrible yardstick for pricing Stax gear.  I see garbage sell for way more than it should and the good stuff pass by unnoticed or undervalued

You can just filter by Sold listings to get a more accurate representation.

Still there are edge cases. I won a BIN for a LNS for $100 that the seller reneged on (and later sold for ~$400-500). That'd still have shown up in "Sold" listings.

I have the N6 and I think it's pretty awesome, but it's their most expensive ($999 I think?) Some people like the N4 and consider that more neutral, but I think it lacks some high end detail.

People at the last LA meet really liked the Switch PR or FR in the R configuration. The problem is that you're paying for both configurations but probably will only use the R configuration most of the time. To me the R configuration is a very Ety ER4S sound.

Thanks to Darin for the advice on their products and for the PM during dinner.

The K10 is tempting, but in the end I went for the N6. Brannan generously offered 100% trade-in during the return period if I decide I want their custom flagship instead.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a total sucker, too. The wife REALLY likes Sonos right now, but I dislike how long it takes to bring up new music providers. I also dislike that I'm limited to my redbook content. I really don't want to rip a 16/44 cut of all my high resolution music if I can avoid it.
Title: Re: Treasure Maps
Post by: Elysian on July 21, 2014, 06:13:19 PM
That 'at 50%, I'm buying close to cost' is the exact argument I was telling myself this morning after putting in an order for the deepblue2, knowing that I've actually been responsible about not buying a whole bunch of stuff I'll never listen to. As much as I like my Android phone, the speakers aren't that great and I'd like to be able to have higher quality audio to listen to around my place, without needing expensive monitors and cabling everywhere. Some of my stuff is only in 24bit, so keeping it in its current format is definitely a big convenience for me too.

Nov 2014 isn't too far away, especially with how quickly the weeks have been going by.

Now I need to find a good way to transmit Bluetooth from my desktop computer. Found a few USB transmitters but the Amazon reviews aren't great. Would appreciate any suggestions that hopefully don't require a PCI slot.

I hope deepblue2 is a substantial improvement over the original.  The kid and I listened to the original, feeding it bluetooth from our phones, last summer, at one of the retailers on Roosevelt Way in the U-District in Seattle (forget which one).  Now, keep in mind that this is a kid who has steadfastly refused to give up his Apple earbuds when given a whole bunch of alternatives from Sennheiser, Westone, and Monster.  The first test track was my standard first evaluation track, the Baltimore Symphony recording of the Dvorak "New World" symphony.  Suffice it to say, I was decidedly unimpressed; congestion, lack of dynamics, and instrumental timbres that weren't quite right.  I started to say "Do you hear ...," and before I could get any further, he said, "yeah, this thing sucks."

Are you sure the bass wasn't turned up way too high? I listened to a unit briefly and once the bass control was dialed back to something reasonable, I thought it was a decent speaker compared to the other bluetooth options.

Maybe it's just me, but I would expect something like classical to not sound so great from a device like this. It's a glorified clock radio, not a 2 channel setup replacement.
